The second pregnancy part V – Breech position, lockdown and Othilia becoming a big sister

The third trimester started with a week 28 appointment with my midwife. She came for a home visit and checked that everything looked good with both little brother and me. I’m monitoring my own blood pressure, blood glucose levels and looking out for protein in urea and other general things, so I updated her on that.

The next event was the week 32 appointment and this was an ultrasound to look at the growth of little brother and to check the amount of amniotic fluid, the umbilical cord and the placement of the placenta. Little brother measured completely average on all parameters and I was also doing good as long as I’m not triggering the pain in the pelvis. Everything looked good except for that little brother had turned and has since the week 32 examination been in breech position.
For the past few weeks I have been on a mission to gently try to convince little brother to turn again to a head downward position. So far my mission has failed, but I’m hoping that he will turn again in the coming weeks. He likes to have his head stuck under my left rib cage and this is starting to get a bit uncomfortable for me. It feels like he’s pushing my lungs and stomach further up in my torso so I get easily out of breath and I can’t eat as much as I want. The 36 weeks registration at the hospital is coming up in week 37 so I will find out what their strategies are to turn little brother around.

Lockdown again

During this period, the third lockdown occurred in the Czech Republic. Or let’s just say that the second lockdown from October hasn’t gone away, the restrictions on human’s freedom has only become tighter now.

This takes a toll on your mental health and it is not easy to stay positive for the coming birth when everything is so uncertain. In normal times I would by now have a solid plan on where I will give birth in April, who will be there to help me through the birthing and where and with whom Othilia will be with when we are at the hospital. The answer to these questions until now is that I do not know. The hard lockdown has been extended to April 5th (the first call was that it would be until March 21st), so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in April. This is an anxiety that I would not want to have.

It’s hard to fix everything that we need for little brother when all the physical stores are closed, but we manage anyway to slowly fill our home with baby stuff (It’s not a real pacifier Othilia has gotten in her mouth, it is for one of her dolls. Othilia has never used a pacifier.)

Othilia is having fun though, dad has made a hand swing for her that she loves.

Preparing Othilia

We have begun the process to prepare Othilia for her upcoming role as a big sister and that soon a baby will join our family. She is only 2.5 years old so I don’t have high expectations that she understands what it means, but we think she is on board with having a baby in the family. She is very caring towards her dolls and stuffed animals and we have books about babies coming to the family that we read to her. We talk about little brother and she can point and hug my belly when we bring up little brother. One funny anecdote happened when I first read a book to her about babies in the stomach. She laughed so much in disbelief that a baby could be in mummy’s belly. Who would have figured that talking animals would be more real and accepted by her than a baby in the belly.

Othilia gets excited when stuff for little brother arrives to our home.

Spring is here and I have entered the last month as pregnant (37 weeks here in the picture). Soon little brother will be here.

Now I have entered the last month as pregnant and the next blog post will be about this, the week 36 registration at the hospital and the art of turning breech babies around.
Parts I, II , III and IV of this pregnancy story are now available as links.

Technical Windecksattel and entering the third trimester

Windecksattel was our main goal before we left Austria for this time. Sandra and Markus had told us to leave this, more technical, hiking trail until the end of our stay, so the snow cover would have a chance to disappear before we hiked up to this part of the Alps.
We felt that it was time to try it just before Pontus birthday  – the weather was a major factor and the weather forecast said that more unstable weather was to come during the following days. We packed food and water, which Pontus were responsible for carrying up the mountain and Ulrika, who just entered the third trimester, were responsible for carrying “det lilla livet” up the mountain. It was going to be a long day out in nature.

Last hike for us in Riezlern and it was going to be an epic one – incredible landscape and Ulrika entering the last trimester (28 weeks pregnant). We chose to head up to Windecksattel and crossing the border to Germany .

This time we would have this view over RIezlern. It was going to be a 750 meter ascent with more or less trail to to follow. Our total distance hiked would be 15 km.

First part was through a fir forest, but we would soon leave the conifers and the easy hiking trail behind us.

Parts of the trail were more technical than others, but it was no problem to hike the trail while being pregnant.

We soon found a sign that should be followed, especially during the winter months when snow hides the terrain.

There are an extensive cave system underneath the mountains in the valley and one of the entry points can be found on this trail. It is a 90 meter deep hole and you don’t want to fall down there while skiing down the trail.

First mission was to reach Mahdtal and eat lunch there before taking on the last part up to Windecksattel.

We did a pregnancy photo shoot in Mahdtal, capturing Ulrika during week 28 on her way to reach her goal at the Windecksattel.

Mahdtal during spring.

Just south of Windecksattel is the Torkopf peak (1930 meters). It is a reachable peak, but we felt that it was better to save this adventure for another time when Ulrika is not pregnant.

We reached the part of the trail where snow still was present. We saw a mountain goat coming down the mountain to lay down on the snow, probably to cool down.

More snow was present the higher up we went and we had to walk over snow covers during the last part of the trail. It became quite steep as well.

We finally reached Windecksattel and got a nice view of the landscape on the other side of the mountain.

Our original plan was to follow the trail through Obere Gottesackerwände, but it was to much snow left on the ground. We decided to turn back here, but we were still impressed with ourselves, hiking 7.5 km and ascending 750 meters. In the end, we kept a pace of 18:04 min per kilometer and maximum altitude was 1840 meters.

We celebrated Pontus 36th birthday while we were in Riezlern. We had a few days of unstable weather before we left this place, so it was a quiet and peaceful celebration this year. After the birthday we had to leave Austria for another central European country – the Czech Republic.
