I left the pregnancy story at week 14 + 0 in the previous post and how I chose the hospital to give birth at and I wish to clarify. The hospital you choose is where you will give birth if nothing urgent happens along the way. Then of course you go to the nearest hospital and they by law must take you in even though you are not registered there.
My registration at Bulovka took a little longer than usual as I did not yet have a pregnancy insurance and it was only this week that I turned around and actually considered taking out an insurance policy due to reasons that will be explained below.

I do all my planning with my midwife and she came for a home visit to discuss birthing options and Othilia got to hear little brother’s heart beat.

Pregnancy insurance

In order to obtain a long-term stay permit in the Czech Republic, the Czech state requires that you take out a health insurance with one of the players in the country.

We are a bit outside the system here in the Czech Republic and for different reasons we are not entitled to any of the state health insurances. It doesn’t matter to us as for ideological reasons we do not want a state insurance, so we have a completely private health insurance, which is approved by the Czech state. This insurance doesn’t include a pregnancy insurance for me, but  I can upgrade to an insurance which includes pregnancy cover with the insurance company. We had asked what one would cost before we went with our health insurances and the price was outrageous in relation to what the actual cost is for a birth here in the Czech Republic. We knew what Othilia’s entire birth, the days on maternity ward, all the tests, and my emergency operation after the blood loss costed (53,000 CZK or about 2000 Euro) and we felt that we could take that cost ourselves instead.

However, we contacted the insurance company after our week 12 ultrasound and were able to get a new quote as everything looked good at that ultrasound. Now we got a much cheaper cost proposal of 75,000 CZK (ie about 2500 Euro or about 25,000 SEK) and then all examinations until the birth are included in that insurance as well.
We accepted this new offer, which was much closer to the actual cost of giving birth in this country. I can add that it is much cheaper to give birth here than it is in, for instance, Sweden.
To clarify, this is a new health insurance for me, so this cost is not on top of my original one. I got the money back for what time it was left of the old one and signed this new health insurance for a full year, which also includes the pregnancy. So in all, this was a good price option for us.

Now insurance and maternity hospital were arranged and I was now in the second trimester.

All this, registering at a maternity hospital and dealing with the insurance company and the paperwork needed to sign a pregnancy insurance, was happening in the beginning of the second lock down in the Czech Republic. Fortunately, lock down in the Czech Republic doesn’t mean that you can’t be outdoors. So we got to hang out with friends at a small airport and Othilia got to get the first feeling of a cockpit.

Second trimester and hanging out at the new metrofarm during the second lock down in the Czech Republic in 2020. Goats needed to be herded so we did that. Thank you Caroline for taking this picture!

The second trimester begins

I felt good the first weeks of the second trimester and the only thing that happened was a blood test for the triple test in week 16 when they also looked for bacteria in my urine and my general condition.

Then came week 18 and nausea and the strong aversions came back with full force. It was now that the symphysis pubis dysfunction also began to manifest itself and my mobility and social energy decreased drastically. I was not used to this as I never had pains in the joints when I was pregnant with Othilia. I have learned that I can avoid pain if I walk with the right posture, i.e. have the pelvis below my upper body all the time when I walk (imagine that you try to push the tailbone down towards the ground when you walk). However, it is not possible to keep that posture when I’m with Othilia and then I have a pelvic belt on hand, as well as an absolutely wonderful TENS device that helps me get rid of the pain effectively so far.

My blood pressure had also started to drop, as it had during my previous pregnancy with Othilia, so I got dizzy from too rapid movements. All this meant that I now had to go down to the lowest gear to cope with the days with Othilia. I have been absent socially and that is because this pregnancy is much tougher than the previous one. I also want to point out that this is definitely not a difficult pregnancy, it’s just that the pregnancy I compare with was the one with Othilia and the pregnancy with her was very easy in comparison. For example, I had no problem hiking 10-15 km in the Alps at the beginning of the third trimester with her. I would not be able to do that now.

Us during the good weeks, I could carry both children without any effort!

Week 20 ultrasound

It was now time for the week 20 ultrasound and it was booked with another obgyn doctor at the clinic I am registered at and unfortunately the female obgyn doctor doesn’t give as good of an impression on me as the doctor I had earlier. I’m used to a thorough examination after having an absolutely wonderfully thorough examination of Othilia in week 20 at an obgyn clinic in Tallinn, Estonia. The male doctor at the week 12 examination was also very thorough, but unfortunately this examination did not feel as good. The female doctor went through everything very quickly and I noticed a lot of things that she missed to check that were checked at Othilia’s week 20 examination. She looked at the big things such as the function of the heart, but I have booked another examination in week 28 with another company to check a little more. What we most wanted to see was little brother’s face as we have a picture of Othilia in 3D from week 20, but unfortunately little brother hid his face during this examination so we never got the chance to see him. We hope this can be changed at my next extra examination.

Little brother waving to us!

We are leaving this blog post with Othilia at the new Metrofarm! Winter was coming and soon it would be christmas.

The continuation of the pregnancy story will be in part IV soon and there the second part of the second trimester, week 20-28, will also be described. See you!
