Mulu is a national park on the UNESCO World Heritage list located at the border of Brunei Darussalam on the malaysian part of Borneo. The cave systems in the limestone rock in Mulu is among the longest in the world and this is also where the world’s largest cave chamber in terms of area (the Sarawak chamber) can be found, and also the world’s largest cave passage (the Deer Cave). The Clearwater Cave is the world’s 10th longest cave system and then you have to take into account that the whole cave system is not yet explored. Archaeological excavations have shown that the caves have been an important burial site 1500 to 3000 years ago.

The park is fantastic when it comes to wildlife. Unlike other parks the animals are not domesticated, but are living completely in the wild. They are of course more difficult to spot because of this, but it’s nice to see that they are shy of humans and not dependent on us. If you are lucky you can catch a glimpse of the monkeys and the hornbill birds that live there. If you are really lucky you can get a glimpse of the leopards that also live in the area, but they are extremely shy.

It takes about 30 minutes to fly there from Miri (you can also catch boats along the river, but it is a big project, so we skipped it). The first thing we had to do was to find accommodation and we found a very cozy homestay (the Mulu River Lodge) just outside the park entrance. After we had installed ourselves we went to the park, registered us and started booking us on different tours. During high season (which is coming now), the tours may be fully booked and you have to book in advance if you want to do something special. We got there just before high season so it was no trouble to book the tours on the spot for us. We can also tell you that it is very easy to change the tours at short notice even though you already paid for the tours (a little more difficult for the tours where you spend the night in the jungle). It was also Pontus birthday so we went to the park’s restaurant and ordered red wine for only 9.6 ringgit / glass (about 23 SEK), which is cheap for being in Malaysia.

We fell asleep to the sound of all the nocturnal animals and the following day it was time for our first day in the park. We began our adventure by exploring the Racer Cave, which is cave exploring at an intermediate level. This means that there are some rope climbing (single rope technique) and you squeeze yourself through some narrow passages. If you want to explore the advanced caves, you must first do an intermediate tour to show that you have the physics to cope with the advanced Caves. Racer Cave is named after the snakes (racer snakes) that live there and you have a great chance of seeing them when you explore the cave. You do not go in so far in the cave and the tour takes about 2 hours.

We had signed us up on the night walk that day so after the Racer Cave we waited for darkness so we could head out on a 2 km walk with the night life in the jungle. Many of the animals are active at night, so it’s a symphony of different sounds you hear when you are walking the trail and we saw a lot of cool plants and animals (mostly insects and lizards). The coolest thing was to turn off the lights and see how the luminescent fungi lit up in the dark, weak light at first, before the eyes become accustomed to the darkness, but increased in strength and it was like standing in an enchanted forest.

It should be possible to take a boat up the winding river if you don't want to fly to Mulu.
