Bitcoin + Bali = True

If someone mentions Bitcoin and Bali in the same sentence we immediately think of Ubud and the Bitcoin community here. There are several restaurants, businesses, and co-working spaces around Bali where you can use bitcoin and meet a great group of bitcoin enthusiasts. These people are building solutions to be able to opt out of the current corrupt economic system and contribute to helping people to be part of a healthy and transparent financial system.

In Ubud, the co-working place Hubud is where you’ll find The Filter, a forum and educational place about Bitcoin, the activity can also be followed via their Youtube-channel. On Hubud, you can also find a bitcoin ATM where you can exchange your Indonesian rupiah to bitcoin.
Gary has organized weekly Bitcoin meetings in Hubud co-working space in Ubud for many years and has been a driving force for building a growing Bitcoin community. We met him when we were here 1.5 years ago and now we have the privilege to live in his house while he is away traveling in other parts of the world.

Other bitcoin-friendly co-working spaces in Ubud are The Onion and Outpost. The website bitcoinsinbali.org gives a good overview of the Bitcoin activity happening on the island. Also Kuta is home to the largest Bitcoin exchange in Indonesia, Bitcoin Indonesia , which has over 270 000 customers.
According to coinmap.org there are over 60 companies in Bali which accept bitcoin as payment, and the website bitislands lists 14 restaurants, 9 service companies, 8 hotels, 2 travel agents, 4 transport companies , 4 clothing and jewelry stores, 2 spas, and 2 adventure agencies that accept bitcoin.

Bitcoin is still small in Bali, but we can see that a lot has happened here in Ubud since we were here 1.5 years ago and it is positive that the ecosystem is growing.

Det finns ett flertal restauranger, företag och co-working ställen där man kan använda bitcoin och träffa ett härligt gäng bitcoin-entusiaster som bor på Bali. Dessa människor bygger lösningar för att kunna välja bort det nuvarande korrupta ekonomiska systemet och bidrar till att hjälpa människor att vara del i ett sundare och transparent ekonomiskt system.

I Ubud på co-working platsen Hubud finns The Filter, en mötesplats och utbildningplats om Bitcoin, vars aktivitet även kan följas via deras Youtube-kanal. På Hubud finns även en bitcoin bankomat där man kan växla indonesiska rupier till bitcoin.
Gary är en eldsjäl som organiserat Bitcoin-möten varje vecka på Hubud coworking space i Ubud sedan flera år tillbaka och varit en drivande kraft för att bygga upp ett växande Bitcoin-community. Vi träffade honom när vi var här för 1,5 år sedan och nu kunde vi få förmånen att bo i hans hus medans han är iväg och reser i andra delar av världen.

Bitcoin är fortfarande litet i Bali, men vi kan se att mycket har hänt här i Ubud sedan vi var här för 1.5 år sedan och det är positivt att ekosystemet växer.

It’s easy to pay with bitcoin using your mobile wallet of your choice.

On Hubud, you can use the bitcoin ATM to exchange your IDR to bitcoin.

Kismet is a restaurant in Ubud with nice food and the option to settle your bill with bitcoin. Kismet also have good wifi connection, but you’re not allowed to have computers on their dinner tables between 6 pm and 22 pm.

Vardag! Weekday!

Den senaste veckan har vardagen infunnit sig för oss. Efter att Rebecca flög hem så har vi velat ha lite vardag i resandet och vi bestämde oss därför att stanna kvar i Ubud till dess att vårt visum gick ut och det gjorde inte saken sämre att Ubud är ett väldigt bra ställe att ha vardag i om man är frihetlig lagd. Vi har hängt med familjen King och ätit köttbullar med brunsås och potatismos som Caroline lagade till oss och lekt med Henry och Winston i poolen på deras tillfälliga tomt. Vi hyrde en chaufför och spenderade en dag med dem i Kuta och spanade in alla som surfade och vi blev såklart väldigt sugna på att prova, så det är vårt nya mål när vi kommer tillbaka till Bali. Vi har varit på bio och sett filmen “spirited away” på en väldigt trevlig biograf (Paradiso) där man sitter i soffor och äter middag samtidigt som man ser på filmen. Man betalar 50,000 rupiah (33 SEK) i inträde och det beloppet har man sedan till godo att köpa mat och dryck för i restaurangen! I fredags käkade vi middag med Veronica och Nadim som råkade ha vägarna förbi oss och det var superkul (Tack för en rolig kväll V och N!). Vi hade så roligt att vi inte kom hem förrän kl 03 på morgonen och bestämde oss därför för att ta en vilodag på lördagen :)! Vi har varit på ett bitcoin-möte i Hubud som samtidigt livestreamades över youtube som var mycket intressant. Sedan följde vi en rappare vid namn Jonny och åt middag med honom på restaurangen the onion som accepterar bitcoin och fick även höra Jonnys nya singel “fuck your bank – buy some bitcoins”. Mitt i allt så fyllde Ulrika år (firade hennes 32:a varv runt solen) och det firades med en dag bland risfälten, massage och en massa mys! Däremellan har vi fått brottats med en del teknikstrul, som gjort att vi inte är klara med dykfilmerna än (det inlägget kommer när vi fått ordning på allt). Nu är vi i Singapore för en Visa-run och första intrycket av staden är att vi är i London med inslag av Stockholm och med stor klick asian-style smetad över hela staden.

After Rebecca returned home last week, we decided to stay in Ubud until our visa expired and it does not hurt that Ubud is a very good place to hang around in if you are a libertarian. We’ve been hanging with the King family and eaten swedish meatballs with brown sauce and mashed potatoes that Caroline cooked for us, and we have played with Henry and Winston in the pool in their temporary garden. We hired a driver one day and spent a day with them in Kuta and checked out the surfers and we became keen to try it out, so our new goal is to try surfing when we come back to Bali. We have also been to a cinema and seen the movie “Spirited Away” in a very nice movie theater (Paradiso) where you sit in sofas and eat dinner while watching the movie. You pay 50,000 rupiah (4 EUR) in the entry and you then reedem the ticket price to buy food and drinks in the restaurant! On Friday we ate dinner with Veronica and Nadim who happened to be passing by Ubud while we were here us and it was great fun meeting them (Thanks for a fun evening V and N!). We had so much fun that we did not come home until at 03 in the morning and therefore decided to take a day of rest on Saturday :)! We have also been on a interesting bitcoin meeting in Hubud where the meeting was simultaneously live streamed to youtube. After the meeting we accompanied a rapper by the name of Jonny to a restaurant (The Onion) that accepts bitcoin and had dinner with him and also got to hear Jonny’s new single “Fuck Your bank (buy some bitcoins)” performed on a small stage there. During all this Ulrika also had her birthday (celebrated her 32nd lap around the sun) and it was celebrated with a day among the rice paddies, massages and a lot of cosiness! We have been struggling with some technical trouble, which has caused it so that we are not ready with our diving moives yet (that blog post will come when we have everything solved). Now we are in Singapore for a Visa-run and our first impression of the city is that we are in London with elements of Stockholm and with clicks of Asian-style distributed over the city.
