We have found our first gem here in Mexico! We chose to travel in to the province of Chiapas after have spent a few weeks on the Yucatan peninsula, and we felt right at home when we got off the bus in San Cristobal de Las Casas. San Cristobal was founded in 1528 by the Spaniards and is located at 2200 meters above sea level. There was obviously a city here in the past, and there are still two ethnic groups, Tzotzil and Tzetzal, in the area. The area has been relatively free from civil wars and conflicts in Mexico, because its location was not so desirable. Between the 1970’s and 1990’s, San Cristobal, and some other cities in the Chiapas province, were occupied by various leftist groups during different rounds. Today, most people who live here is working in the mining or tourism business, and unemployment is very low.
An important Spanish-Christian tradition is the “El dia de los Reyes magos”, translated to “the three wise men’s day”, and this feast is celebrated on January 6th. The tradition starts on the 5th of January when children put their shoes on the windowsill, and they will find Christmas present when they wake up the next morning. We got to experience this festival here with speeches, stalls with food and candy, fireworks and children who carried around their Christmas presents!
Despite the cold evenings and nights (the temperature can drop 15 degrees from lunch to dinner), we thrive here! We enjoy the beautiful scenery, the people and the good, cheap food we find in the many restaurants available here!
