Texel island and preparing to leave Netherlands

Netherlands do have a few islands outside of their mainland and the biggest island is called Texel. The rumor was that Texel (pronounced Tessel in Dutch) would have nice places to take a bath, so we packed our swimwear. Just a few days from our planned date to travel to Texel, a friend contacted us and let us know that she and a friend where in Amsterdam for a holiday so we invited them to come with us to Texel.

Nederländerna har några öar utanför kusten och den största kallas Texel. Ryktet var att Texel (uttalat Tessel på holländska) skulle ha fina badmöjligheter så vi packade med oss badkläderna. Bara några dagar från det planerade datumet för att resa till Texel kontaktade en vän oss och meddelade att hon och en vän var i Amsterdam för en semester så vi bjöd in dem att komma med oss till Texel.

We bought our ferry ticket online, which made the check-in smooth and simple, and we drove on to the ferry after we had picked up our friend Lynn and her friend Lina at the train station in Den Helder.

Ferries to Texel depart from Den Helder and they depart frequently all year (one every 30 minutes during high season). It is quite cheap if you can avoid the weekends and Mondays, meaning taking your trip out to Texel Tuesday to Thursday is cheapest. You buy a two way ticket and you either walk, bicycle or take a car on board. We took a car and the ticket is valid for the car, meaning that you can go up to 9 persons in one car on one car ticket. The price was 25 Euro for a car if you travel Tuesday to Thursday (it is 37 Euro the other days).

One of the things you can do on the island is to visit the Eierland lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1863 and it was built on top of a 20-metre high sand dune.

During an uprising in April 1945 the lighthouse suffered a lot of damage. The lighthouse was then repaired by constructing a new wall around the original wall, but you can still see the original wall with its bullet holes when you go up the tower.

We got a nice overview over the sea and beach from the top of the lighthouse. Othilia loves to climb!

This was our main objective today. It was a really warm day, so being in the water was a necessity for Othilia.

Pontus was running around and took pictures on animals he found in the water.

A few crabs! There were also animals in the water that we couldn’t see, but we could feel them – water fleas!

We ate dinner on Texel before we took the ferry back to the mainland and said good bye to Lynn and Lina. Our days in Netherlands were about to end, so we want to end our Netherlands 2019 trip with photos from our time here that didn’t fit the previous blog posts.

The days we didn’t have an adventure planned we stayed in or close to our magical village. We had Harlingen near us, where we went for shopping etc, but we also had close to Bolsward, where we found our favorite ice cream flavor – duindoorn in Dutch or havtorn in Swedish (sea buckthorn in English).
Pontus started with a new habit to wake up and go watch the sunrise, so I want to show you a few of the sunrises Pontus captured during our month in Netherlands. So here is a mix of pictures from our month in the Netherlands.

Vi åt middag på Texel innan vi tog färjan tillbaka till fastlandet och sa hejdå till Lynn och Lina. Våra dagar i Nederländerna var på väg att ta slut, så vi vill avsluta vårt Nederländerna 2019 med bilder från vår tid här som inte passade de tidigare blogginläggen.

De dagar vi inte hade ett planerat äventyr stannade vi i eller nära vår magiska by. Vi hade Harlingen nära oss, dit vi åkte för att shoppa osv, men vi hade också nära Bolsward, där vi hittade vår favoritglassmak – duindoorn på holländska eller havtorn på svenska.
Pontus började med en ny vana att gå upp på morgonen och titta på soluppgången, så jag vill visa er några av de solupppgångar Pontus fångade under vår månad i Nederländerna. Så nedanför denna text är en blandning av bilder från vår månad i Nederländerna.

The heat was unbearable so we had to buy a fan to our rented house. It saved our days and nights for a couple of days.

Another stunning sunrise that Pontus captured. This is not a bicycle road – it is actually a normal car road with a maximum speed limit of 60 km/h.

We took a walk in a small park in Bolsward one evening.

And this is here main objective when when she sees water. You can imagine what her reaction is when we deny her a bath.

Wherever we go we get stuck for a while if Othilia see a ball. Here, we had stopped at a McDonald’s to eat and Othilia was in heaven, the playground had balls hanging from ropes.

Then it was time for us to leave Netherlands, but it will not be our last time here. We love the Netherlands, especially the Northern parts. More pictures from our time here can be seen in the slider below.

Vandra upp för “The Indian Nose” är en fantastisk upplevelse på 2,200 meters höjd och är du där lagom till att det börjar ljusna, så får du uppleva ett fantastiskt ljusskådespel över Atitlansjön och de tre vulkanerna San Pedro, Toliman och Atitlan.

Vi startade dagen 2:30 då jordens position mot solen gör att det börjar ljusna redan 5:10 den här tiden på året och vi ville hinna upp innan det började ljusna. Leden, med start från San Juan, tar cirka 2 timmar, men det går att komma upp snabbare om man har uthålligheten. Från San Pedro kan man ta en tuk-tuk till San Juan, det går att förhandla priset ned till 20 Quetzales per person (cirka 22 Sek), och den måste du boka kvällen innan då du inte kommer hitta tuk-tuks på gatorna vid den tiden på dygnet. Vi valde också att göra den långa vandringen upp till toppen, så vi blev avsläppta vid ingången till leden i San Juan, och vi har filmat hur det ser ut vid ingången så titta på vår video nedan (runt cirka 2:45 min om du vill se hur det ser ut där man startar). Det är inte lätt att hitta om man inte kommer dit med någon som vet var den startar. Du kan även starta vid Santa Clara, en by på andra sidan toppen och då tar det endast 30 min till den lägre toppen, där många guidade turer stannar och de kommer inte upp på den högre toppen, dit vi ville.

Det är bara att börja vandra då parkavgiften på 30 Quetzales (33 Sek) betalas när du kommer ned, då stugan inte är öppen vid denna tid på dygnet. Ett bra tips när du tar denna väg är att ta till vänster där leden delar sig och inte lämna den större leden för mindre stigar ut bland odlingarna! Det kommer vara väldigt mörkt, så ta även med dig bra belysning!

Vi kom upp på toppen strax innan 5:00 och vi njöt av soluppgången medan vi väntade på problemen som vi visste skulle komma. Bakgrunden är att både San Juan och Santa Clara hävdar att toppen är deras och kommer du från San Juan, så kommer några oerhört otrevliga män med hundar komma och kräva pengar av dig. De hävdar att berget tillhör Santa Clara och du måste betala för att få vara där, men vad de gör är att de rånar dig då alla pengar du ger dem hamnar i deras fickor. Går du upp med guide så betalar guiden dem för att inte störa dig, men är du utan guide och ensam så kan det bli rätt så otäckt. Bra att veta är att guiderna betalar 15 Quetzales per person, så känner du dig hotad så kan du betala det, men de tar gärna mycket mer om de kan det. Vi var dock 5 personer och vi var förberedda på detta så efter en hätsk ordväxling, det är bra att kunna argumentera på spanska, samt aldrig stanna eller sänka farten, så kom vi ned utan att betala denna utpressaravgift. Hundarna de hade med sig var vänliga, männen var aggressiva, men de hotade oss aldrig fysiskt, så det går att knuffa bort dem och fortsätta nedstigningen utan att behöva stanna upp. Ni kan även läsa vår vän Marks underbara recension på tripadvisor här och även titta på vår youtubevideo nedan!

Hike up to the “Indian Nose” is a wonderful experience at 2,200 meter above sea level and, if you’re there in time for the sunrise, you get to experience a fantastic light show over Lake Atitlan and the three volcanoes San Pedro, Toliman and Atitlan.

We started the day at 2:30, because it starts to brighten already at 5:10 this time of year, because of the Earth’s position to the sun, and we wanted to get up before it began to brighten. The trail that starts from San Juan takes about 2 hours, but it is possible to come up faster if you have the stamina. You can take a tuk-tuk to San Juan from San Pedro, it is possible to negotiate the price down to 20 Quetzales per person (about 2.4 Euro), and you have to book a tuk-tuk the day before, you will not find tuk-tuks on the streets at this time during the night. We also chose to take the long hike to the top, so we were dropped off at the entrance to the trail in San Juan. We have it on film how it looks at the entrance, so watch our video below (around 2:45 minutes if you only want see how it looks where you start). It’s not easy to find if you don’t get there with someone who knows where the trail starts! You can also start at Santa Clara, a village on the other side of the peak, and then it takes only 30 minutes to hike to the lower top, where many guided tours stop and they will not take you up to the higher peak, which is where we wanted to go.

You pay the park fee of 30 Quetzales (3.5 Euro) when you come down, since the cottage collecting the fee is not open at this time of night. A good tip when you take this trail is to always take left where the trail splits and not leave the larger trail for small paths leading into the small farm lands! It will also be very dark, so bring you good torches!

We reached the peak at around 5:00 and we enjoyed the sunrise while we waited for the problems we knew would come. The background is that both San Juan and Santa Clara claim that the “Indian nose” is theirs and if you start from San Juan, some extremely unpleasant men with dogs will come and demand money from you. They claim that the top belongs to Santa Clara and you have to pay them to be there, but what they do is that they rob you! All the money you give them end up in their pockets and not to the community. If you go up with a guide, the guide will pay them so they don’t disturb you, but if you are alone and without a guide, it can get pretty nasty. Good to know is that the guides pay them 15 Quetzales per person, so you can pay that if you feel threatened, but they will take much more if they can. We were 5 people and we were prepared for this so after a bitter exchange of words, we came down without paying the robbers. It is very good if you are able to argue in Spanish and do not stop or slow down. The dogs they had with them were friendly, the men were aggressive, but they never threatened us physically, so it is possible to just push them out of your way and continue the descent without having to stop. Gokarna!

Nu befinner vi oss i Gokarna, som enligt rykten är vad Goa var för trettio år sedan. Vi valde att åka hit för att Ulrika skulle få vila upp sig och för att det är lättare att åka tåg norrut längs med kusten än vad det är från inlandet. Vi kommer inte att åka till Goa och vad vi har hört om stället så är det inte en riktigt en sådan plats som vi brukar uppskatta. Till Ulrikas stora glädje så fick hon för första gången i sitt liv åka liggbuss när vi åkte från Hampi till Gokarna och hon var överlycklig (det har hon längtat efter sedan hon såg sådana bussar i Laos)! Gokarna ligger 1 timme söder om Goa och består av en liten by och flera stränder som är separerade av höga klippor. Om man läser på wikitravel om Gokarna så låter det inte som ett trevligt ställe och ser man endast till Kudle beach och Gokarna beach så är vi beredda att hålla med. Vi valde dock att åka till Om beach och här är det mycket trevligare och rena stränder, men man får vara beredd som vit kvinnlig turist att utsättas för påhopp av grupper av indiska män som vill ta kort med dig enbart för att du har en bikini på dig och som helt ogenerat frågar efter kyssar (trots att Pontus satt bredvid). Det gäller att säga nej, vänligt men bestämt till dessa individer. Om beach där vi bodde upplever vi lite som en plats för indisk charterturism blandat med västerländska turister som börjat hitta hit från Goa. Hit kommer indiska familjer med barnen för att bada och hit kommer även indiska män som dricker och ligger redlösa i vattenbrynet kl 4 på eftermiddagen (ja, det har vi sett) och tomma whiskeyflaskor står utanför deras rum. Trots vår beskrivning så är det hemskt mysigt här och det är absolut inte stökigt även om vår beskrivning av Om beach låter så.

Det är oerhört vackert här och det är den finaste stranden som vi sett hittills i Indien och det enda vi gör är att hänga på stranden och kolla på solen eller så sover vi. Snart kommer vi göra den längsta resan hittills landvägen och då krävs det att Ulrika blir bättre. Vi har en alldeles speciell plan och den innefattar en 170 mil lång resa på 2 dagar, men vi har stora förhoppningar att få se ytterliggare en häftig plats som ryms inom Indiens gränser innan vi lämnar vårt fantastiska Indien.

We are now in Gokarna, which according to the rumors is what Goa was thirty years ago. We chose to go here so Ulrika could get some rest and because it is easier to take the train north along the coast than it is from the inland. We will not visit Goa and what we have heard about the place, it’s not really such a place that we usually appreciate. To Ulrika’s great joy, we got onboard a sleeper bus when we went from Hampi to Gokarna and she was overjoyed (she has longed for trying them since she saw such buses in Laos)! Gokarna is 1 hour south of Goa and comprises a small village, and several beaches separated by high cliffs. If you read the wikitravel site about Gokarna it does not sound like a nice place to visit, and if you only see Kudle beach and Gokarna beach we are prepared to agree with the description of the place. However, we chose to go to Om Beach and here it is much nicer and the beach is clean. However, be prepared as a white female tourist to be exposed to groups of Indian men who want to take pictures with you just because you have a bikini, and even undisturbed ask for kisses (although Pontus sat just next to Ulrika). You have to say no, politely but firmly to these individuals. Om beach feels like a place for Indian charter tourism mixed with Western tourists that have started to come here from Goa. This is where Indian families come with children to swim and Indian men come to drink and sleep in the water next to the shore at 4 pm in the afternoon because they drank them-self under the table (yes, we have seen this), and empty whiskey bottles standing outside their rooms. Despite our description it is really nice here and it’s definitely not as bad as our description of Om Beach sounds like.

It is incredibly beautiful here and it’s the nicest beach we have seen so far in India. The only thing we do here is hang on the beach and watch the sun go up and down or we eat or sleep. Soon we will make the longest trip so far by land which requires that Ulrika gets better. We have a special plan and it includes a 1700 kilometer long journey during 2 days, but we have high hopes of seeing yet another cool place that is within India’s borders before we leave our incredible India.

VI lyckades fånga en lysande planet på bild i skymningstimmen innan solen kommit över horisonten! We managed to catch a shining planet with our camera during the twilight hours before the sun came over the horizon!

Om Beach! Stranden kallas Om beach för att den ser ut som det indiska sanskritbokstaven Om. Om beach! The beach is called Om beach, because it looks like the Indian sanskrit letter Om.
