The night before Angkor Wat,  we were invited to dinner that Manon and Max prepared. It was a french dinner (Ratatouille) with cambodian ingredients and it was very good! Next morning we got up at 4:40 AM to go and see the sunrise at Angkor Wat and it was nice! Two things we thought about when we arrived to Angkor Wat and it was that the number of tourists was less than what we imagined (but still very many), and it was so open around Angkor Wat. We had imagined a bit more jungle around it, but it was open fields and UlrikaIMG_7258 got the impression of being in an English manor house (minus all the flowers). However, the architecture is very impressive on both Angkor Wat and the temples of Angkor Thom. These temples were hindu from the beginning, but with the buddhists entering the area, the temples were turned into buddhist temples, but the various hindu gods and their stories are portrayed in all the temples. We have put together a short video from when we were there for those who are interested!

The plan for next week is to head to Phnom Penh and obtain a visa for Vietnam and continue our journey there!

See you again at the book fair :)!

We had to cancel Wednesday’s trip to Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, when Pontus woke up with nausea and fever. Pontus slept all day and Ulrika amused herself by reading out “The Martian” by Andy Weir. It is about an astronaut who was left on the surface of Mars when the rest of the crew evacuated due to a severe storm. The crew received indications that Mark (the astronaut’s name) was killed, but that was not the case. The reader follows Mark’s log entries about how he tries to survive on Mars and what people on earth do to help him. The book is very good and should be scientifically correct (according to critics)! We can really recommend it. Book No 2 that Ulrika read out was “Alongside Night” by J. Neil Schulman. It is about an America on the ruin of collapse during an increasingly socialist rule (on the way to dictatorship) and the son (Elliott) to a Nobel Prize winner in economics seeing his family arrested by the state due to  his fathers criticism towards the state and warnings about this trend toward more socialism (and destruction) for 15 years. Elliott’s only chance to see his family is to join the”terrorist group” which is an underground loose network of agorists/anarcho-capitalists who are trying to save the USA from going under. Very good book!

Yesterday (Thursday), Pontus felt better so we went to Angkor Thom and visited most of the temples situated there. Below you will find a 2-min video that we recorded at the Bayon Temple with our GoPro camera. We had to postpone the visit to Angkor Wat until tomorrow (Saturday) because Pontus did not feel completely healthy, but it did absolutely nothing for yesterday afternoon we could finally meet Linda, Helena and Sten-Gunnar! We hugged, ate (thanks so much for the food !!!) and talked for a few hours before they continued their hectic schedule :)! It was wonderful to meet you!

Tonight the french couple is preparing dinner for the Maden family, us and a couple from Argentina (Rosio and Pablo) who also lives with the family. We are responsible for the drinks!

Hemma i Siem Reap

Vår säng! Our bed!

IMG_7144

Yesterday (Monday) was a real travel day for us. We got up at 6 am in Kep and 15.5 hours later we stepped off the bus in Siam Reap. We can really recommend the Mekong Express (head office located north of the night market, along the Tonle Sap River in Phnom Phen) if you ever think of riding  the bus in Cambodia. Once in Siam Reap, we met up Maden that we’ll stay with when we are here. We have been invited to his home about 2 km outside Siam Reap in the woods, to get to feel what it is like to live in Cambodia, through the website couchsurfing.com. We live with Maden and his family and also a very nice French couple (Manon and Max), that are hitchhiking through Laos and Cambodia. Tomorrow we are going to get up before the sun rises to experience Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom together with Manou and Max!
