Vi hade enbart bokat in två dykdagar innan vi kom till Semporna, men efter att ha upplevt Sipadan och Mataking så kände vi båda att vi inte var klara med dykningen. Det blev en vilodag och sedan begav vi oss ut för en tredje dykdag och denna gång blev det Mantabuan där vi dök vid “Coral Garden”, “Aquariaum” och “Sting ray city”. Vi fick se mycket fina koraller och färgglada fiskar, men det roligaste var att se krokodilfisken (finns med på film nedan) där främre delen av fisken verkligen liknande en krokodil. Vi fick även se sköldpaddor och många blåpricka rockor som försvann i raketfart så fort man närmade sig dem och några söta svartfläckiga blåsfiskar.
Vi är i Malaysia under ramadan så det kan vara lite krångligt att hitta matställen som ser öppna ut på dagarna. Vårt tips är att leta upp kinsesiska restauranger (de är öppna och säljer öl!) och kolla in dem närmare då de ofta dragit för med skynken eller solskydd som täcker halva ingången i respekt för de som fastar. I Semporna hittar man de flesta ut efter vattnet och de har väldigt god mat. Intressant är att stenfisken, som är en av världens giftigaste fiskar ses som en delikatess och kan hittas i restaurangerna. Rör man en stenfisk eller trampar på dem så kan man dö och dessa fiskar är oerhört duktiga på att kamofluera sig, så man får vara väldigt försiktig när man dyker (speciellt vid vrak) för att inte råka nudda något som sekunder senare visar sig vara en stenfisk och inte en bit av vraket eller en sten i sanden.
Efter tredje dykdagen sade vi hejdå till dykgänget och åkte till staden Tawau där vi hängde innan vårt nästa flyg gick som tog oss till Jakarta i Indonesien där vi är nu!
We had only booked two diving days before we arrived in Semporna, but after experiencing Sipadan and Mataking we both felt that we were not ready to leave this place yet. We took one day of rest and then we went out for a third day of diving and this time we went to Mantabuan where we dived at the dive sites “Coral Garden”, “Aquariaum” and “Sting Ray City”. We saw very nice corals and colorful fishes, but it was most fun to see the crocodile fish (included in one of the movies below) that really looks like a crocodile in the front. We also got to see turtles and many bluespotted rays that disappeared really fast as soon as you approached them and some adorable black spotted puffer fishes.
We are in Malaysia during Ramadan so it can be a little tricky to find food places that look open during the days. Our tip is to find chinese restaurants (they are open and sell beer!) and check them out closer as they are often behind drapes covering half the entrance in respect for those who fast. You can find most of the chinese restaurants by the water in Semporna and they have very good food. Interestingly, stone fish, which is one of the world’s most poisionus fish is seen as a delicacy and can be found in the restaurants. You can die if you touch or step on a stone fish and these fishes are extremely good at disguising themselves, so you have to be very careful when diving (especially around wrecks) and not accidentally touch something that seconds later proves to be a stone fish and not a piece of wreckage or a stone in the sand.
After the third day of diving, we said goodbye to our diving gang and we went to Tawau where we hung out before our next flight departed that took us to Jakarta in Indonesia where we are now!

Är du i Tawau, så borde du gå till detta ställe och äta. Du väljer vad du vill ha att äta och sedan steker de maten innan det blir serverat . Resultatet är är fantastiskt gott och väldigt billigt! You should visit this place and eat if you end up in Tawau. You choose what you want to eat and then fry the food before they serve you. The result is amazingly good and very cheap!
Vi valde att dyka med “Sipadan Scuba” för att de var hyfsat billiga och var väldigt smidiga att boka via deras onlineformulär där vi direkt kunde se om de hade tillgängliga platser till Sipadan de dagar vi ville dyka och de hade bra recensioner på tripadvisor. Vi kan verkligen hålla med recensionerna, supertrevliga människor som vi hängde med både i vattnet och på kvällarna. Säg hej till Cooze, Simon, Andrea, Fabio, Jason och Andy från oss om ni väljer att dyka med dem i sommar!
Semporna är en väldigt liten stad, men vi kan meddela att de ändå har ett KFC där (vi provade aldrig då vi inte gillar KFC). Det mesta för turister händer vid hamnen och nära fiskmarknaden. Det gjorde ont i hjärtat att se ett gäng limsniffande småkillar (såg ut att vara mellan 6 och 10 år) springa runt i området och man får vara uppmärksam på sina tillhörigheter när de är i närheten, då de har väldigt utstuderade sätt att snabbt stjäla värdesaker från turister.
Dykningen dag 2 blev lika bra som dykningen vid Sipadan dag 1 och om huvudfokus under gårdagen var stora marina djur, så var dagens huvudfokus på vrak, små färgglada fiskar och oerhört vackra koraller. Vi brukar inte gilla koraller så mycket men det här var som att dyka i en trädgård med olika häftiga växtliknande djur. Vi åkte ut till Mataking som består av en liten (kecil) och en stor (besar) ö som är ihopkopplad med bokstavligen en strandpromenad. Första dyket för dagen var vid ett vrak, “Ship Wreck Post”, och på detta vrak fanns en brevlåda som tydligen fungerar. Om man lägger ett frankerat brev i lådan så ska det tydligen komma fram till mottagaren. Andra dyket var “Garden of Eden” och det är verkligen som att simma omkring i en korallträdgård och dagens tredje dyk blev vid ön Timba-Timba och dykplatsen hette “Jalan Jalan”. Det går inte att göra dykplatserna rättvisa med en torr beskrivning, så istället rekommenderar vi att ni spanar in våra videoklipp från dagens dyk nedan men ni får tänka er mycket mer färger!
We chose to dive with Sipadan Scuba because they were pretty cheap and it was very convenient to book through their online form where we could directly see if they had places available to Sipadan on the days we wanted to dive and they had good reviews on tripadvisor. We can certainly agree with the reviews, super nice people works there that we hung out with both in the water and in the evenings. Say hello to Cooze, Simon, Andrea, Fabio, Jason and Andy from us if you choose to dive with them this summer!
Semporna is a very small town, but you can find a KFC there, because this company is everywhere in Southeast Asia (we never tried because we are not so fond of KFC). Most of the tourists hang out at the harbor and the fish market. It hurt our heart to see a bunch of small boys addicted to glue (they looked to be between 6 and 10 years old) running around in the area and you have to be observant on your belongings when they are nearby, as they have very elaborate ways to quickly steal valuables from tourists.
The diving day 2 was as good as the diving at Sipadan on day 1 and if the main focus of dive day 1 was large marine animals, then the main focus of dive day 2 was wrecks, small colorful fish and incredibly beautiful coral. We usually don’t like corals so much, but this was like diving in a garden full of different cool plant-like animals. We went out to Mataking Island which consists of a small (Kecil) and a large (Besar) island that is paired with a beach string. The first dive of the day was at a wreck, “Ship Wreck Post”, and there is a mailbox on the wreck that supposedly works, so if you put a stamped letter in the box it should arrive to the recipient.The second dive site was “Garden of Eden” and it really is like swimming in a coral garden and our third dive of the day was at the island Timba-Timba and the dive site called “Jalan Jalan”. We feel that we can’t give the dive sites justice by our descriptions, so instead we recommend you check out our videos from our dives below, but you have to imagine a lot more colors!

Vi har äntligen fått uppleva Sipadan och vi kunde inte föreställa oss innan vad vi skulle få vara med om, men vi kan säga att våra förväntningar definitivt infriades! Sipadan har blivit utnämnd till en av världens vackraste dykplatser just för sin mångfald av marint liv och det klara vattnet. Det är en liten vulkanö där korallrevet stupar rakt ner 600 meter en liten bit utanför strandkanten innan det når sjöbotten. Det är som om man dyker vid en jättehög korallvägg! Djurlivet är fantastiskt här och vi har fått sett hajar, jättesköldpaddor, barracudor, skorpionfiskar, muränor, bläckfiskar och en massa färgglada fiskar (stora som små), sniglar och koraller i alla dess former och färger. Det är som om alla fiskar som samlas vid Sipadan går på steroider, då de är väldigt stora jämfört med andra ställen vi dykt vid tidigare. Vi gjorde tre dyk vid Sipadan, “South point”, “Barracuda point” och “Midreef” och även om alla dykplatserna var fantastiska så var höjdpunkten “Barracuda point” då vi hamnade i ett stim av jättebarracudor och där hajarna och sköldpaddorna var överallt! Vi lyckades också dyka ned till 31 meter då vi jagade efter en haj för att få med den på film. Vi kommer lägga upp ihopsatta filmklipp ifrån dyken nedan, så ni kan få en aning om vad som väntar er om ni dyker här, dock ser man mycket mer färger själv än vad kameran snappar upp.
Vad gäller säkerheten här så finns det militärbaser på varje ö (de som tillhör Malaysia) och vi kände oss väldigt trygga av att se militärer med maskingevär på ryggen på Sipadan och bra att veta är att delar av ön är avstängd för turister just på grund av den militära närvaron. Vi har även sett militärbåtar ute på havet och säkerhetsvakter med maskingevär patrullerandes inne i Semporna. Det sistnämnda är på grund av den ökade säkerhetsrisken efter kidnappningen i staden Sandakan (ligger en bit norr om Semporna) för några veckor sedan. Tydligen är rika kinesiska turister måltavlor (enligt rykten) och det allmäna rådet är att turister inte ska röra sig utanför turistområdena i mörkret och inte heller promenera på stranden när det är mörkt.
Nu blir det lite information om själva resan till Semporna från Kota Kinabalu. Vi tog bussen från bussterminalen i Inanam som ligger cirka 10 km utanför KK. Bästa sättet att ta sig från KK till Inanam är med buss som kostar 1.5 ringgit (om man inte vill betala för taxi). Det ska gå flera bussar dit från centrala KK, men vi tyckte att det var lite krångligt att hitta till rätt busshållsplats. Vi hittade iallafall buss nr 4 och den utgår från Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman (södergående riktning, efter rondellen nära hotellet Shangri-La) och tipset är att vara ute i god tid då det är mycket trafik (det tog 50 minuter för oss ut till Inanam). Nattbussen från Inanam till Semporna var inte världens bekvämaste sätt att färdas på och vi fick inte mycket sömn, särskilt inte då polisen klev på bussen kvart i tre på morgonen och kollade identitshandlingarna, men vi kom till rätt ställe och var framme i Semporna halv sex på morgonen.
Vi vill också tipsa om en jättebra nyhetsajt som plockar ut de libertarianska russinen ur nyhetsflödet både i Sverige och utomlands. Bubb.la har nu funnits i ett år (grattis!) och startade som ett crowdfunding-projekt av Martin Eriksson och Sofia Arkestål som vi naturligtvis var med och stöttade! Vi har även bidragit som medredaktörer med att välja ut nyheter, sätta rubriker och rösta upp olika medredaktörers bidrag (medans vi var kvar i Sverige). Så om du är trött på statlig socialist-propaganda genom “oberoende” media så tycker vi definitivt att du ska spana in bubb.la:s hemsida, facebook och twitter! Men det bästa sättet är nog att följa Bubb.la nyhetsflödet via valfri RSS-läsare. Redaktörerna gör ett väldigt bra jobb med att sätta egna rubriker med libertariansk infallsvinkel till nyheterna och det kan bli riktigt dråpliga rubriker emellanåt 🙂
We finally got to experience Sipadan and we couldn’t imagine beforehand what to expect, but we can say that our high expectations were certainly fulfilled! Sipadan has been appointed as one of the most beautiful dive sites in the world for its diversity of marine life and the clear water. Sipadan is a small volcanic island and just off shore the coral reef drops 600 metres before reaching the ocean bottom. You are diving next to a huge coral wall! The wildlife is amazing here and we have seen sharks, giant turtles, barracudas, scorpion fish, moray eels, octopuses and a lot of different colorful fishes (large and small), snails and corals in all forms and colors. It is as if all the fish in Sipadan is on steroids, because they are very large compared to fishes in other places we’ve been diving in the past. We did three dives at Sipadan, “South Point”, “Barracuda Point” and “Midreef”, and although all the dive sites were amazing, the highlight was “Barracuda Point” where we ended up in a school of big barracudas and where sharks and turtles showed up everywhere! We also managed to dive down to 31 meters when we chased after a shark to catch it swimming with our GoPro camera. We’ll post the assembled videos from the dives below, so you can get an idea of what awaits you if you dive here, however, you’ll see much more colors yourself than what our camera could pick up.
As for security here, there are military bases on each island (those belonging to Malaysia) and we felt very safe when seeing soldiers with machine guns on their backs when we were on Sipadan and good to know is that parts of the island is off-limits to tourists because of the military presence. We have also seen military boats at sea and security guards with machine guns that patrols the streets of Semporna. The latter is due to the increased security risks following the kidnapping in the town of Sandakan (located a bit north of Semporna) a few weeks ago. Apparently, wealthy Chinese tourists are the targets (according to rumors) and the general advice is that tourists should neither move outside the tourist areas in the darkness, nor walk on the beach after dark.
Here is a little more information about the actual trip to Semporna from Kota Kinabalu. We took the bus from the bus terminal in Inanam located about 10 km outside KK. The best way to get from KK to Inanam is by bus which cost 1.5 ringgit (if you do not want to pay for the taxi). There are several buses that goes from the center of KK to Inanam, but we found it a bit tricky to find the right bus stop. Hovewer, we found bus No. 4 and it starts from Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman (southbound direction, after the roundabout near the hotel Shangri-La) and a tip is to be out in time when there is much traffic (it took 50 minutes for us to get out to Inanam). Night bus from Inanam to Semporna was not the most comfortable way to travel and we did not get much sleep especially since the police got on the bus quarter to three in the morning and checked everybody’s identity documents, but we came to the right place and arrived in Semporna half past five in the morning.
We also want to promote a great news site (mostly in swedish) that picks out the libertarian cherries in the news flow both in Sweden and abroad. Bubb.la has now existed for one year (congratulations!) and it started as a crowdfunding project by Martin Eriksson and Sofia Arkestål and we of course gave our support! We have also contributed as co-editors by selecting news, adding headers and voting up different co-editors contributions (while we were still in Sweden). But the best way is probably to follow the Bubb.la newsfeed through your choise of RSS reader. The editors do a very good job of making their own headlines with an libertarian touch to the news, and it can be really hilarious headlines from time to time 🙂
