Vi valde att åka tillbaka till San Cristobal för att därifrån ta oss till Guatemala och en av anledningarna till beslutet var att vi fick höra att det finns en förhöjd risk att stöta på banditer både före och efter gränsövergången vid Tapachula i sydvästra Mexico. Med tanke på att några av våra vänner stötte på banditer veckan innan då de tog bussen från Puerto Escondido till Acapulco, så kände vi båda att vi inte ville ta den vägen till Guatemala. En annan anledning till vårt beslut var också att vägen över bergen ska vara otroligt vacker att åka igenom. Det är långt mellan Puerto Escondido och Guatemala, så därför fick det först bli en nattbuss till San Cristobal del Las Casas, som vi tidigare besökte i januari i år, och sov några nätter där innan vi korsade gränsen. Vi har också upptäckt att Ulrikas kropp är lite känslig för höjdskillnader och inte uppskattar att gå från havsnivå till 2100 meter under en natt. Symtom på höjdsjuka brukar inte manifestera sig under 2500 meter, så vi tror att Ulrika bara är lite känslig. Hennes symtom var en tryckande huvudvärk från temporalloberna över frontalloben, samt en extrem trötthet. Hon sov 18 timmar under våra första 24 timmar på hög höjd, eller vad säger ni Sandra och Markus? Samma sak skedde förra gången vi åkte från havsnivå till San Cristobal, men som tur är så acklimatiserar hon sig snabbt och symtomen var borta efter 48 timmar.
I San Cristobal behövde vi bland annat uppdatera vår garderob, då några av våra kläder är trasiga, och förutom att San Cristobal är en fin kulturstad, så hittar man många klädaffärer, marknader och second hand-butiker i staden. Sedan påbörjade vi äventyret att ta oss över till Guatemala, men det finns så mycket att berätta om den resan så vi får göra ett eget inlägg om det!
We chose to go back to San Cristobal and travel to Guatemala from there. One of the reasons for this decision was that we were told that there is an increased risk of encountering bandits before and after the border crossing near Tapachula in southwestern Mexico. Given that a few of our friends encountered bandits the week before when they took the bus from Puerto Escondido to Acapulco, we both felt that we did not want to take that route in to Guatemala. Another reason for our decision was that the road over the mountains is said to be incredibly beautiful to travel on. It is far between Puerto Escondido and Guatemala, so that was why we first first took a night bus to San Cristobal del las Casas, which we visited earlier this year in January, and slept a few nights there before we crossed the border. We have also discovered that Ulrika’s body is a little sensitive to rapid differences in altitude and does not appreciate going from sea level to 2100 meters in one night. Symptoms of altitude sickness usually does not manifest itself below 2500 meters, so we believe that Ulrika is just a bit sensitive. Her symptoms were a strong headache from the temporal lobes over the frontal lobe, and an extreme fatigue. She slept 18 hours during our first 24 hours at this altitude, or what do you think Sandra and Markus? The same thing happened last time we went from sea level to San Cristobal, but fortunately she acclimated quickly and all symptoms were gone after 48 hours.
In San Cristobal we needed to update our wardrobe, because some of our clothes had non-reparable holes. Beside being a nice, cultural city, you also find a lot of clothes shops, markets, and second-hand shops in San Cristobal. After that we began the adventure to travel to Guatemala, but there is so much to tell about that journey so we’ll do it in a separate blog post!

Det regnade och haglade en del under tiden vi var i San Cristobal. Det var dock varmare här nu än när vi var här i januari. It rained and hail hit the streets during our time in San Cristobal. However, it was warmer here now than when we were here in January.
Vi har även hittat vår nya favoritglass med det roliga namnet mord-i-sko! We also found our new favorite ice cream with the funny name mord-i-sko or “murder in a shoe” in Swedish!
