16 km north of Trincomalee is the small village of Nilaveli with the fabulous beach. It’s very easy to get from Trincomalee to Nilaveli with the local bus and it is clearly marked at the bus station so it’s easy to find the right bus. The bus to Nilaveli is number 900 and costs 40 Rupee (about €0.4).
We went there for a few days of peace and quiet and the chance to snorkel in the beautiful waters at Pigeon Island which is about 10 minutes by boat from Nilaveli. You need government permission to go out to Pigeon Island (10 US dollars) and the boats that bring out the tourists needs to have a government license, so this makes it more expensive to get out to the island. We payed 7000 rupees (about €45) for two persons to go out in the morning and back in the afternoon. We chose to snorkel instead of diving because this place is very shallow so diving gear is not needed. We got to swim with both turtles and black tip reef sharks, and see a lot of big titan triggerfish and many other fishes. Unfortunately, much of the coral got destroyed in this part of Sri Lanka by the tsunami in 2004.

We lived with a Russian couple, Alex and Daria, who works at two dive centers in Nilaveli and we were privileged to spend time with them during the time we were here. They rented a cozy little house so we had access to the kitchen and got the opportunity to cook our own food with fresh vegetables that we bought in small markets we found in the area. It was incredibly hot these days with highs above 40 degrees, so the best time of the day was late afternoon, then often a thunderstorm swept across Nilaveli and brought cooler air. Ulrika took some cool photos of this, as you can see below.

This part of Sri Lanka is very poor and has been hit hard by the setback in tourism after the civil war and the tsunami, but now the tourists are slowly coming back and gives a much-needed income for the locals!
