Mumbaiområdet bestod från början av sju öar, men 1782 startades Hornby Vellard-projektet vars syfte var att länka samman dessa sju öar till en enda stor ö. Detta var en av de första stora civilingenjörsprojekten i världen och ön som Mumbai står på idag blev klar 1838.
Trots att ön idag är en världsmetropol, så finns här också den stora nationalparken Sanjay Gandhi som sträcker ut sig med häftiga berg och vidsträckt djungel. Vi besökte nationalparken med vår vän Mithun och vandrade 15 km den dagen i en fantastisk natur som vi inte hade förväntat oss att hitta i Mumbai. Mithun kunde berätta om områdets historia och anekdoter från hans äventyrliga vandringar i djungeln tillsammans med hans vänner. Vi promenerade till Kanherigrottorna som finns inne i nationalparken och dessa grottor dateras från vårt första århundrade och flera av grottorna är tillängnade buddha. Nationalparken var en viktig knutpunkt i Indien före vår västerländska tideräkning med handelsvägar för att nå hamnarna som handlade med antikens Grekland och Mesopotamien.
Vår sista dag i Indien spenderade vi eftermiddagen på toppen av berget ovanför grottorna, där vi njöt av utsikten över djungeln och Mumbais färskvattensjöar som försörjer denna världsmetropol med vatten. Det var en häftig utsikt att se denna orörda djungel och bergen samtidigt som höghusen tornade upp sig runt nationalparken. Nästa dag sade vi hejdå till vårt älskade Indien och satte oss på ett plan som tog oss hem till våra nära och kära i Sverige.
The Mumbai area originally consisted of seven islands, but the Hornby Vellard-project started in 1782 , whose aim was to link these seven islands into one big island. This was one of the first major civil engineering projects in the world and the island Mumbai stands on today was completed in 1838.
Although the island today is a world metropolis, there’s also a large national park, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, stretching out on the island with mountains and vast jungle. We visited the National Park with our friend Mithun and walked around for 15 km in the fantastic landscape that we had not expected to find in Mumbai. Mithun could tell us about the history of the area and anecdotes from his adventurous hikes in the jungle with his friends. We walked to the Kanheri caves that can be found inside the park and these caves dates back to our first century, and several of the caves are dedicated to Buddha. The area was an important hub in India before our western era with trade routes to reach ports that traded with ancient Greece and Mesopotamia.
On our last day in India, we spent the afternoon on the top of the mountain above the caves, where we enjoyed the view of the jungle and Mumbai’s freshwater lakes that feed this world metropolis with water. It was a cool view to see this pristine jungle and mountains, while high buildings loomed around the National Park. The next day we said goodbye to our beloved India, and jumped on a plane that took us home to our family and friends in Sweden.

Vi kunde se en skymt av en av de tre färskvattenssjöarna i nationalparken från toppen av berget också! We could see a glimpse of one of the three freshwater lakes in the national park from the top of the mountain too!
Vi fick också sällskap av en apa medan vi satt och pratade! A monkey joined us while we sat and talked!
