It has been a week since we posted anything on our blog and we have had a fantastic time, but before we write something about our jungle adventure in Mulu (we have to go through lots of pictures and movies) we want to tell you about what Miri has to offer. Miri was founded in 1910 when the oil company Shell encountered oil at 130 metres on Canada Hill. Miri’s oil well No. 1, also called “the grand old lady” was Shell’s first oil well in the world and laid the foundation for Sarawak’s oil industry, which is now moved out into the sea, but oil was also found on the mainland by 2011. The grand old lady served under 62 years before it was taken out of use and nowadays it is part of the state oil company Petronas oil museum up on the hill. It is a small museum, but very interesting and it was free to go in there and stroll around! Most of the time in Miri was spent to acquire the necessities for our trip out to Mulu National Park. We needed to update our first aid kit and buy other essentials before going in to the jungle so we were strolling around in various shopping centers most of our time in Miri, and it was also there we got another prejudice about a Muslim country crushed when we found a sex shop in the middle of a shopping mall. After that, we stepped on a Malaysian Airlines plane and landed in a paradise with really large cave systems that we are going tell you more about in future blog posts.

We have now arrived in Kota Kinabalu and the city is close to the epicenter of the earthquake that occurred little more than a week ago. Extremely tragic with 18 dead on Mount Kinabalu and the top of the mountain that looked like a pair of rabbit ears has now become a unicorn because one of the rocks fell down during the earthquake. We have also met wonderful people here who were on the mountain together with the climbers that has now been sentenced for having undressed on the mountain and we have been hearing versions other than the one currently circulating in the press (especially the British press that has been horrid).
