The Corax Conference 2017

Corax Conference 2017 blew us away! Ever since we heard about the 2016 conference, we knew that we wanted to attend this year’s version and we bought our tickets before the first speakers even were announced. When the first line of speakers finally were revealed, we knew that we were in for a treat. Corax conference aimed to cover most viewpoints existing under the big umbrella called Libertarianism and we think that they did a really good job attracting diverse speakers from different standpoints. Most interesting was to hear from Professor Hans-Herman Hoppe and his clarification of his and his predecessor Murray Rothbard’s visions of Libertarianism. We highly recommend purchasing a remote ticket so you can listen to his and the rest of the speakers talks from the Corax conference.

However, the most controversial talk of the conference was surprisingly Jeff Deist’s speech, which was broadcasted from Mises University, and we can’t understand why really. We can highly recommend listening to Tom Woods show episode 966, where you’ll find the whole speech and good points from Tom Woods, really explaining why this speech is nothing more than highlighting the importance of decentralization.

Ulrika also thought that talking to and listening to Julie Borowski was especially fun, since she has been following Julies work on Youtube for several years now. That’s why she gets the honor of being on the first picture in this blog post. More about the conference can be read in the figure texts. We had a fantastic week on Malta, so thanks to Bubb.la/Cor.ax for making this happen!

Coraxkonferensen 2017 fick oss att tappa andan av glädje och lärdomar. Ända sedan vi hörde om 2016 års konferens visste vi att vi ville delta i årets version och därför köpte vi våra biljetter innan de första talarna ens hade tillkännagivits. När den första raden av talare äntligen presenterades visste vi att vi skulle få vara med om en enastående tillställning. Coraxkonferensen syftar till att täcka de flesta delarna under det stora paraplyet som kallas Libertarianism och vi anser att de gjorde ett riktigt bra jobb. Höjdpunkten var att höra från professor Hans-Herman Hoppe där hans förtydligande av hans och hans föregångare Murray Rothbards visioner av Libertarianismen var väldigt klargörande. Vi rekommenderar starkt att du köper en fjärrbiljett så att du kan lyssna på Hans-Herman Hoppe och resten av föreläsningarna från Coraxkonferensen.

Den mest kontroversiella föreläsningen på konferensen var överraskande nog Jeff Deists tal som sändes från Mises Universitetet. Vi kan starkt rekommendera att lyssna på avsnitt 966 av “the Tom Woods show” där du hittar hela talet, samt bra poänger från Tom Woods, som verkligen förklarar varför detta tal inte är något annat än ett framhävande av vikten av decentralisering.

Ulrika uppskattade också att få chansen att prata med och lyssna på Julie Borowski, eftersom hon har följt Julies arbete på Youtube i flera år nu. Därför får Julie äran att vara med på den första bilden i det här blogginlägget :). Vi hade iallafall en otroligt bra vecka på Malta, så stort tack till Bubb.la/Cor.ax för anordnandet av detta!

Julie Borowski, one of the speakers that Ulrika was looking forward to listen to. Her Libertarian Youtube-channel is funny and makes Libertarian viewpoints accessible on topics that are discussed today. Libertarianism in social media was her main topic during this conference.

Sofia and Martin, the founders of bubb.la and Cor.ax, made this conference happen. There aren’t any conferences in the world that gather speakers from such different stand-points that can be found under the big umbrella called Libertarianism, so we didn’ẗ want to miss this for the world.

The main speaker was the legendary Professor Hans-Herman Hoppe, a rare sight on the international speaker scene. We feel blessed to have had the opportunity to listen to his current viewpoint.

Adam Kokesh, the NOT president of the USA 2020, was also a speaker on the conference. We had the pleasure of listening to Adam last year on the Anarchapulco conference in Acapulco. He will do a European tour 2018 and he will come to Sweden, so don’t miss him when he comes to your country!

Matthew Reece, writer on the Zeroth Position, had a great lecture about the neo-reactionary and the alt-right movement. Highly informative.

This is Corax conference for us. Matthew Reece and Adam Kokesh wouldn’t be invited to the same conferences in the US, but here they could meet and have a discussion on stage, a rare event in the Libertarian movement. Unfortunately, Adam had to leave early so we just have to look forward to the next time Matthew and Adam can meet on stage.

Jeff Deist, the president of the Mises Institute in the US, held an interesting lecture on decentralization for both us and the Mises University with the help of Skype and cameras. It was one of the best speeches we listened to and it was also one of the most controversial apparently. We highly recommend you to listen to the Tom Woods episode linked above in the text, if you want to learn more about what Jeff actually said. Brendan O’Neill, a Marxist-Libertarian journalist from Spiked online. He talked about his case for a Libertarian-marxism, but we found it confused and we didn’t agree with his advocacy for democracy.

Bubb.las own doomster ;), Johnny Mellgren, held a spot on lecture about the next financial crisis.

Other speakers were not familiar to us, but were very interesting. Moritz Bierling held two lectures during the conference. The first one was a Jordan Peterson-inspired lecture about SYSO – Sorting YourSelf Out, instead of the degenerative YOLO (You only live ones)-view of life.

The second lecture was about the internet phenomenon memes and trolling, and what it means.

We got good laughs from his lecture. We were really bad at taking photos, so we don’t have any pictures from the Lichtenstein as a Libertarian utopia lecture by Andreas Kohl or the lecture about free economic zones in the world by Simon Sarevski, which is a shame.

We do have one blurry picture of Simon wearing his T-shirt displaying a nice quote by Bastiat.

We found more nice T-shirts worn by other conference attendants.

Dinners and activities were also on the schedule, so we had the chance to talk to each other all night if we wanted.

We also met friends that we haven’t seen in a long time. We had the pleasure to get to know these guys in Acapulco last year. It was great catching up with Shamus and David on Malta.

We noticed a stricking resemblance between Pontus and Aron Askew, the campaign manager of Adam Kokesh’s presidential campaign.

We also had time to enjoy the cliffs of Malta before we left the conference. Pontus is not naked 😉

Välkommen till vår nya blogg! På ytan har inte mycket ändrats, så det stora jobbet för Ulrika har varit det som inte riktigt syns. Det är tur att Ulrika inte visste vilket jobb det är att flytta en blogg, annars hade hon kanske inte satt igång det här projektet. Många lärotimmar med mycket frustration har det blivit, men nu känns det enklare att leka webbdesigner och kodknackare. Erfarenheten har gjort att Ulrika lovar att ge uppmuntrande ord till människor som faktiskt jobbar med att flytta och designa bloggar hädanefter, ni gör ett bra jobb!

Det har ju hänt en hel del sedan vi skrev sist som vi vill delge er. Först är det att vi äntligen fått kontakt med anarkokapitalister här i Mexiko och det visade sig att vår nya vän Pete bor i San Cristobal del las Casas, så vi möttes upp för middag och vin en av de sista kvällarna för oss i San Cristobal. Det var så roligt att träffa en likasinnad människa och ha vettiga diskussioner om allt från små vardagliga erfarenheter till globala händelser. Vi jämförde Sverige och Nya Zeeland och en hel del nickande instämmanden blev det. Det ska bli roligt att träffas i Acapulco om en månad!
Sedan har vår kära nyhetssajt vuxit ett steg och erbjuder nu premiumtjänster för ca 45 kr månaden så att man kan stötta bubb.la-projektet helt i en frihetlig anda baserat på frivillighet, tillskillnad mot socialistmedia som SVT och SR. Welcome to our new blog! Not much has changed on the surface of our blog, so most of the work for Ulrika has been on what is not really visible. It is fortunate that Ulrika did not know how much work it is to move a blog, otherwise she might not started this project in the first place. Many hours of learning, with a lot of frustration, but now it feels easier to play web designer and code writer. The experience has made Ulrika make a promise to give words of encouragement to people who actually work with moving and designing blogs, you are doing a great job!

A lot has happened since we last wrote a blog post that we want to share with you. Firstly, we have finally made contact with anarcho-capitalists here in Mexico and it turned out that our new friend Pete lives in San Cristobal del las Casas, so we met up for dinner and wine one of the last evenings for us in San Cristobal. It was so nice to meet a like-minded person and have sensible discussions about everything from small everyday experiences to global events. We compared Sweden and New Zealand and a lot of nodding in agreement happened when we did. It will be fun to meet again in Acapulco in a month!
Secondly, our dear news site has grown a step and now offer premium services for 5 Euro a month, so now you can support the bubb.la project entirely in a libertarian spirit based on voluntarism, unlike the socialist state media that is called SVT and SR. Bubb.la is our primary source of news about what is happening in Sweden and the world, and it is also through bubb.la that we have found other libertarian blogs and news sites. Libertarianer i Singapore / Libertarians in Singapore

Vi åkte till Singapore med fördomen att vi skulle komma till en dyrare variant av Manhattan, men det visade sig vara en underbar stad med mycket parker och grönområden och fantastiska byggnader och där man faktiskt kunde hitta hyfsat billiga ställen att äta på som kallas Hawker centers (det är food courts med många små bås där de säljer olika typer av mat). Första dagen spenderades i Gardens By The Bay som är som en Noaks ark för växter från världens alla hörn. Här finns praktexemplar av välskötta grönskande och blommande växter i stora futuristiska växthus och till och med vi blev förtjusta i alla orkideér som finns (hörde ni det Anna S, Sara L och Nina)! Vi fick även en försmak av alla häftiga byggnader i Singapore denna dag, men höjdpunkten för oss och anledningen till att vi åkte till Singapore var för att vi fått kontakt med några anarkokapitalister som bor i Singapore och lördag lunch var det dags för vår första träff med Martina, Stefan, Nina och Damjan på Artistry café som självklart accepterar bitcoin! Vi spenderade två härliga dagar med våra nya vänner och de visade oss runt i Singapore och vi fick chansen att utbyta tankar och ideér med dem samt tipsa varandra om bra böcker och podcasts. Vi besökte också och betalade med bitcoin på Sarnies och CAD Café under dessa två dagar. På lördagkvällen fick vi uppleva förberedelserna inför firandet av Singapore 50 år som självständig stat där militären hade parad på gatorna och i luften och visade upp allt förutom ubåtar och kärnvapenspetsar (det har de säkert tillgång till då Israel står för utbildningen av den Singaporeanska militären enligt våra källor) och på kvällen var det fyrverkerier i marinan. På Söndagen tog Martina med oss till Haw Par Villa där Aw bröderna (som uppfann tigerbalsam) har skapat en park för att visa upp kinesisk mytologi, legender, sägner och delar av konfucianismen. Där kunde man bland annat hitta de tio domstolarna i helvetet och beroende på vad man hade gjort i livet så som att mörda, inte betalat skatt till att säga emot sina föräldrar så delades specifika straff ut, allt från att bli sågad itu, slängd i lava till att bli mald mellan stora stenblock eller få sitt hjärta utskuret. Detta visades väldigt grafiskt med välgjorda dockor och skulpturer. Martina visade oss även en hemlig väg in till den avstängda delen i parken och där hittade vi två gamla teatrar, och med åskovädret som rullade in så kändes det som att vara med i filmen “spirited away”. På kvällen drack vi öl med Stefan och pratade om skillnaden mellan anarkokapitalismen i Sverige för 10 år sedan och hur det ser ut idag och det går åt rätt håll kunde vi konstatera, frihetens filosofi har nått en mycket större publik sedan dess! Trots att Singapore är ett storebrorsamhälle med väldigt strikta sociala lagar så känns det ändå som att Singapore vore ett trevligt land att bo och arbeta i några år. Många av de sociala lagarna beivras inte och den ekonomiska friheten är enorm jämfört med många andra delar av världen. Det ska också tillägas att en del av de värsta sociala och ekonomiska restriktionerna enbart drabbar den inhemska befolkningen som har medborgarskap och det är mycket förmånligt att vara expat i Singapore. Här är en intressant lista med fakta om Singapore som vi fick reda på genom våra nya vänner.

Det är progressiv skatt på arbete på mellan 0-17%. Om man tjänar 42 000 kr/mån betalar man endast ca 3% skatt, vid 86 000 kr/mån är skatten ca 6% och vid 128 000 kr/mån så är skatten ohyggligt höga 9%. Dessa siffror är dessutom i överkant då du vanligtvis får tillbaka en hel del av denna skatt en gång per år om statens finanser ger överskott och utlänningar som jobbar i Singapore betalar ingen skatt där första året! Låginkomstagare som tjänar mindre än 126 000 kr på ett år betalar 0% i skatt.
Arbetslösheten är endast 2% och de har inga låtsas arbetsmarknadsåtgärder som Sverige och många andra länder har där de stuvar in arbetslösa för att slippa räkna dem i den officiella statistiken.
Du betalar skatt först efter ett år i landet i en klumpsumma, men du kan få skriva på ett avtal med ditt företag och där du får betala en massa pengar om du avbryter ditt arbetskontrakt i landet innan ett år har gått (det blir dyrt för dig).
Det är lag på att alla lägenheter ska ha ett bombsäkert skyddsrum i lägenheten, även om det är på 22:a våningen!
Det är en dold landskatt för expats, så det är oerhört dyrt för de utan medborgarskap att äga boende i Singapore.
Män med medborgarskap har obligatorisk 2 års militärutbildning och sedan obligatoriska rep-övningar flera gånger per år. Detta gör att lokalbefolkningen har en stor nackdel på arbetsmarknaden.
Det är statligt finansierad sjukvård för medborgare. Expats som bor i Singapore får teckna privata sjukförsäkringar, vilket är bra för dem!
Homosexualitet är förbjudet, men lagen beivras inte och du får vara homosexuell i landet. Du får dock inte hångla i det publika rummet men detta gäller även heterosexuella par!
Du får inte dricka eller äta i tunnelbanan och du får ej gå mot rött (beivras dock sällan)
Spöstraff är en vanlig bestraffningsmetod för brott som vandalism och grövre brott (men endast om du är man och vid god fysisk hälsa).
Tunnelbanan slutar gå 23.30 på vardagar för att goda medborgare ska sova för att orka jobba och inte vara ute och dricka.
Alkoholskatten är hög.

Vi hade iallafall en underbar tid i Singapore och vi sa adjö men på återseende till Stefan, Martina, Nina och Damjan och vi hoppas att vi kan ses snart igen! Vi flög tillbaka till Bali där vi är nu och tänkte att vi skulle lära oss att surfa. We went to Singapore with the prejudice that we would come to a more expensive version of Manhattan, but it proved to be a wonderful city with lots of parks and green spaces and amazing buildings and where you actually could find fairly cheap places to eat called hawker centers (food courts with many small stalls selling different types of food). We spent the first day in the Gardens By The Bay which is best described as a Noah’s Ark for plants from around the world. Here you find magnificent examples of well-tended and flowering plants in large futuristic greenhouses and even we became fond of all the orchids that can be found in the world (did you hear that Anna S, Sara L and Nina)! We also got a taste of all the cool buildings in Singapore that day, but the highlight for us and the reason we went to Singapore was that we had gotten in contact with some anarcho-capitalists living in Singapore and Saturday lunch was the time for our first meeting with Martina, Stefan, Nina and Damjan on Artistry cafe that of course accepts bitcoin! We spent two wonderful days with our new friends and they showed us around in Singapore and we got the chance to exchange thoughts and ideas with them and tell each other about good books and podcasts. We also visited and payed with bitcoin at Sarnies and CAD Cafe during those two days. Saturday evening we got to experience the preparations for the celebration of Singapore 50 years as an independent state in which the military paraded the streets and in the air, and showed off everything except submarines and nuclear warheads (that they probably have access to if need be since we heard Israel is responsible for the education of the Singaporean military), and then there was a fireworks display in the marina. On Sunday Martina took us to Haw Par Villa, where the Aw brothers (who invented the famous tiger balm) created a park in the 1930’s for showcasing Chinese mythology, legends, myths and elements of Confucianism. Here you’ll find the Ten Courts of Hell that displays what can happen to you if you commit murder, not pay taxes or contradict your parents and all kinds of other violations of the ethical code of that time. Depending on your crime you will be tortured by everything from being sawn in two, thrown into lava, squished between big boulders or get your heart cut out. All these penalties were shown very graphically with well-made dolls and sculptures. Martina also showed us a secret way into the sealed-off section of the park where we found two old theaters, and it felt like being in the movie “Spirited Away” with the thunderstorm that rolled in at the same time. In the evening we drank beer with Stefan and talked about the difference between the situation for the anarcho-capitalists in Sweden 10 years ago and how it looks today, and we could conclude that it is going in the right direction, the message and philosophy of freedom has advanced significantly since then! Although Singapore is a big brother society, with very strict social laws, it still feels like Singapore would be a nice country to stay and work in a couple of years. Many of the social laws are not prosecuted and economic freedom is huge compared to many other parts of the world. It must also be said that some of the worst social and economic constraints only affects the indigenous population with citizenship and it is very advantageous to be an expat in Singapore. Here is an interesting list of facts about Singapore as we found out through our new friends.

It is progressive labor taxes between 0-17% in Singapore. If you earn 5 000 € / month you only pay about 3% tax, at 9 000 € / month, the tax is about 6%, and at 15 000 € / month the tax is just over 9% approximately. These figures are in addition on the high side because you usually get back a lot of this tax once a year if the state treasury makes a surplus and additionally foreigners working in Singapore don’t pay taxes there in the first year! People who earn less than 15 000 € during a year pay 0% in taxes.
The unemployment rate is only 2% and they have no pretend labor market programmes like Sweden and many other countries have, where the government keeps the unemployed busy in meaningless programs to avoid counting them in the official statistics.
You pay tax only after a year in the country in a lump sum, but you can get to sign a contract with your company where you may be paying a lot of money if you cancel your contract of employment in the country before a year has passed (it will be expensive for you ).
It is law that all homes must have a bomb shelter in their home, even if it is an apartment on the 22nd floor.
There is a hidden land tax for expats, so it is extremely expensive for those without citizenship to own accommodation in Singapore.
Men with citizenship have mandatory two years of military training and then compulsory military exercises several times per year. So the locals are really disadvantaged on the labour market due to this.
There is state financed medical care for citizens. Expats without citizenships must take out private health insurance, which is good for them!
Homosexuality is prohibited, but the law is not enforced so you can be gay in the country. You may not however make out in public spaces but this also applies equally to heterosexual couples!
You are not allowed to eat or drink in the subway and jay walking is forbidden (but rarely enforced).
Caning is a common punishment method for crimes such as vandalism and more severe felonies (but only if you are male and in good physical health).
The subway stops running 23:30 on weekdays since good citizens should go to sleep to be productive at work the next day and not be out drinking!
The tax on alcohol is high.

We had a wonderful time in Singapore and we said goodbye and see you later to Stefan, Martina, Nina and Damjan and we hope we can meet again soon! We flew back to Bali where we are now and thought that we would learn how to surf. Vi smög in i ett förbjudet område i parken och det kändes som om vi steg in i “spirited away”-världen. We sneaked in to a restricted area in the park and it felt like that we had entered the world from the movie spirited away!

En väldigt god dessert (Chandola) som vi testade i Singapore. Det är is, kokosmjölk, svarta bönor (ligger under berget av is), socker och massa gelebitar! Det var gott! A very good dessert (Chandola) that we tested in Singapore. It is ice, coconut milk, black beans (located under the mountain of ice), sugar and pieces of jelly! It was good!
