Antigua är en väldigt vacker stad omgiven av 3 stora vulkaner som alla sträcker sig 2000 meter över Antigua och ramar in staden i en grön dal. Antigua grundades på 1500-talet av spanska erövrare, så Antigua är uppbyggd på samma sätt som de flesta centralamerikanska städerna vi hittills besökt. Här finns ännu ett gatusystem i rutmönster med en central del där man finner en park och en kyrka och låga fyrkantiga lådor till byggnader, vilket är jättetråkigt enligt oss. Antigua är dock ett undantag och det beror nog på de breda kullerstensgatorna, ruiner efter naturkatastrofer och de många gröna delarna i och runtomkring staden.
Antigua ligger i ett seismiskt aktivt område, vi fick känna på en jordbävning på 5.7 på richterskalan under vår tid i Antigua och det gungade på bra i 15-20 sekunder, så man får räkna med både vulkanutbrott och jordbävningar när man är här. Vulkanutbrotten kommer från vulkanen Fuego och är riktigt häftiga att uppleva, vilket vi gjorde när Pontus fyllde år! Antigua var huvudstaden för Guatemala i mer än 200 år, men efter flera kraftiga jordbävningar och vulkanutbrott under 1600- och 1700-talet, speciellt Santa Marta jordbävningen 1773, beslutade Spanjorerna för att flytta huvudstaden till där Guatemala City ligger idag.
Det finns flera byggnader kvar som vittnar om stadens utsatthet inför naturen, försök till restaurering har dock gjorts på vissa av byggnaderna, så vi tog vår kamera och promenerade runt och dokumenterade alla intressanta platser i Antigua som vi kunde hitta.
Antigua is a beautiful city surrounded by three large volcanoes that all stretches 2,000 meters above Antigua and frames the city in a green valley. Antigua was founded in the 1500s by Spanish conquerors, so Antigua is constructed in the same way as most Central American cities we visited so far. Here you will find a street grid system in a chessboard pattern with a central part where you will find a park and a church and low square boxes to buildings, which is really boring according to us. However, Antigua is an exception and it probably depends on the wide cobblestone streets, ruins after natural disasters and the many green elements in and around the city.
Antigua is located in a seismically active area, we got to experience an 5.7 earthquake on the Richter scale during our time in Antigua and we rocked for a good 15-20 seconds, so you can experience both volcanic eruptions and earthquakes when you are here. Nowadays, Volcanic eruptions comes from the volcano Fuego and it is really cool to experience, which we did when Pontus had his birthday :)! Antigua was the capital of Guatemala for more than 200 years, but after several strong earthquakes and volcanic eruptions during the 1600s and 1700s, especially the Santa Marta earthquake in 1773, the Spaniards decided to move the capital to where Guatemala City is located today.
There are several buildings left as evidence of the city’s vulnerability before nature, attempts at restoration has been made on some of the buildings, so we took our camera and walked around and documented all the interesting places in Antigua that we could find.

Sjöjungfrufontänen hittar man i PLaza Mayor, byggd år 1737! The Mermaid Fountain can be found in the Plaza Mayor, built in 1737.

Sedan hittade vi San Franciscokyrkan/klostret, som började byggas på under 1500-talet. Jordbävningar, speciellt den år 1565, har raserat klostret och delar av fasaden på kyrkan. Dock har vissa delar restaurerats under 1900-talet! Then we found the San Francisco church/monastery, which was built in the 1500s. Earthquakes, especially one in the year 1565, destroyed the monastery and parts of the facade of the church. However, some parts have been restored during the 1900s!
Till höger om kyrkan kan man lösa en biljett in till biblioteksmuseét (7 Quetzales, ca 8 Sek), som ligger i den gamla klosterdelen av kyrkan. Du får även tillgång till trädgården och det är ett fantastiskt litet krypin i Antigua! To the right of the church you can buy a ticket (7 Quetzales, approximately 0.9 Euro) for the library museum located in the old convent of the church. You also get access to the garden, a great little place in Antigua!

Jättefin utsikt över Antigua, men regnovädret var på väg in så vi fick skynda oss tillbaka till Antigua! Really nice view over Antigua from here, but a rain storm was coming in so we had to hurry back to Antigua!
