To visit a tourist resort during the off-season is really underestimated. Not a lot of tourists, lower prices and the rain cools you in the heat. Hikkaduwa is perfect to visit now (high season starts in November). It is around 30-35 degrees during the day with short intense rain showers that disappear quite quickly. There are signs in both German and Russian (and Danish) in Hikkaduwa, so you probably understand what nationalities come here! Besides a trip to the tsunami museum (that we described in the previous blog post), our plan was to snorkel in the water here and go to Galle to look at an example of  European imperialism. Unfortunately, the visibility in the water was too poor for snorkeling so we had to cancel that, but the fort in Galle is still available even if it rains. This is another place where the Portuguese and Dutch have fought. The Portuguese founded the fort in Galle (1500s), and after the Dutch took it over they built up and reinforced the fort (1600s onwards)!  It looks like you have left Sri Lanka behind and are standing on European soil when you step inside the walls of the fort, if only by the architecture of the buildings. It’s a bit surreal to stroll around here, but very nice. Fort Galle has been renovated after being hit hard by the tsunami in 2004.

Then we took the train up to the Negombo to spend our last two nights in Sri Lanka near the airport. We strolled around in Negombo for a few hours, but we spent most of the time to mentally prepare to go to India. However, we did manage to see the Dutch canal and fish market here in Negombo before we said goodbye to Sri Lanka for this time. Now we are in India and there is much to write about our first impressions, but that will come in our next blog post!
