We have again settled down by the Pacific Ocean, only this time on the east side, when we have come to the west side of Mexico. The city that we chose to go to is called Puerto Escondido and the beach where we live is called Zicatela beach, and we recommend you to add those names to your memory if you intend to explore Mexico in the future. We also recommend you to skip the Yucatan Peninsula if you have short of time; the food, the atmosphere, cities, beaches and nature, everything gets a lot better the farther west on the southern part of Mexico as you come. It is very easy to take the bus around in Mexico. There are several major bus companies offering transportation to different areas and you can go long distances with comfortable night buses. Ticket prices are considerably more expensive than Southeast Asia and it is mainly because of the very high tariffs that the Mexican government collects on the modern roads. A stretch of 600 kilometres, which takes about 12 hours, costs 500-600 pesos per person (25-30 Euros) and we could get air tickets for that kind of money in Asia. There are also buses that travel the back roads and stopping at the rural villages in some places, and perhaps we are too cautious, but we stick to the larger bus companies that run the major routes given the rumor Mexico has. You can find excellent information about bus travelling in Mexico here. The southern areas of Mexico are, however, much safer than the northern areas bordering the United States, and we use this map to determine our travel route here in Mexico. You can not buy bus tickets online if you do not have a Mexican credit card, but it is easy to check bus times online and then go to the bus station to buy tickets. It was in this way that we chose our next destination. Ulrika sat and looked at all the destinations where the buses from San Cristobal del Las Casas went to, chose those who would take us closer to Acapulco, then did research on Wikitravel about the places and now we are sitting at our favorite café and working with our new blog! We hope that you like it 🙂
