Efter att ha fått tips från lokalbefolkningen så bestämde vi att nästa destination i Indien skulle bli Kumily, som ligger cirka 10 mil söder om Munnar. Kumily ligger vid en stor nationalpark och tigerreservat (Periyar nationalpark), som var vad vi ville besöka. Morgonen började dåligt, vi gick upp 5.15 för att åka med direktbussen mellan Munnar och Kumily, men det visade sig att den bussen var inställd. Men det löste sig genom att vi istället fick göra en jättefin bussresa på 5.5 timmar på slingriga vägar, genom många småbyar och där vi fick byta buss i Cherutoni och Kattapanna. Även om denna resa tog längre tid än vad det skulle ha gjort med direktbussen, så var det värt det med tanke på allt vi fick se på vägen. Det är så lätt att åka med lokalbussarna här, då det finns många vänliga människor som är hjälpsamma och visar oss till rätt buss.
Vi hade fått tips om ett homestay i Kumily när vi var i Munnar, så vi mötte upp med ägaren, Ajamal, på busstationen och det visade sig vara ett perfekt rum att bo i under vår vistelse här. Huset ligger vid skogen, utanför stadskärnan och turistområdet, men det går ändå snabbt att promenera in till centrum. Ajamal och hans familj är jättetrevliga och hjälpsamma, så vi kan verkligen rekommendera att bo med dem om man planerar att besöka Kumily.
Vår plan var att besöka nationalparken här och vi valde att göra en tur som innehöll både vandring och paddling med bambuflottar på Periyarsjön just för att det skulle vara störst chans att få se en vild elefant från bambuflotten. Trots en del planering så valde vi nog den sämsta dagen vädermässigt att gå på vandring och paddla på vattnet i en nationalpark. Regnskurarna avslöste varandra och åskmullret kom och gick under hela dagen, men det gjorde absolut inget då vi hade en fantastisk dag där vi fick se väldigt många djur! Vi såg 20 elefanter (varav 3 unga elefanter) och vi råkade komma riktigt nära 3 stycken elefanter då vi rundade en liten kulle. Det var verkligen inte med mening så vi fick skynda oss in i skogen för att inte bli attackerade och vara tvungna att använda oss av den beväpnade vakt som vi hade med oss (det hade varit riktigt tråkigt). Vi fick även se en liten elefantunge bada i sjön och spruta ned sin mamma med vatten på ett oerhört lekfullt sätt. Tydligen är det väldigt ovanligt att se så många elefanter på samma gång (detta var första gången på 5 dagar som elefanterna visade sig överhuvudtaget) och än mindre att få se de skygga bisonoxarna som lever i naturreservatet. Bisonoxarna är till och med ovanligare att se än de få tigrar som lever i nationalparken och vi såg 20-30 stycken i olika omgångar under vår vandring. Vi räknade även in ett rådjur, fem vildsvin (varav en som blev uppretad av ett gäng småfåglar), vilda höns, en blå skorpion, giftiga spindlar, apor och en massa fåglar. Vi tittade också på kanelträd, samt ingefära plantor och stora gurkmejaplantor som växte vilt i djungeln och det var riktigt gott att få smaka på färsk gurkmeja. Vi besökte även en liten ö som lokalbefolkningen använde som fiskeläger och vi fick se hur de tog till vara på den infångade fisken.
Nöjda, trötta, blöta och en timme försenade kom vi tillbaka till ingången av nationalparken och tackade våra guider och vandringskamrater för en väldigt speciell dag. Vi är väldigt medvetna om vilken fantastisk tur vi hade med djurlivet under dagens vandring så de gjorde inget att tigrarna inte valde att visa sig denna gång ;). Det är precis så här vi vill uppleva djur; i det vilda och på deras villkor!
After receiving advice from locals, we decided that our next destination in India would be Kumily, located about 100 kilometer south of Munnar. Kumily is located near a large National Park and Tiger Reserve (Periyar National Park), which was what we wanted to visit in this area. The morning started badly when we went up 5:15 to take a direct bus between Munnar and Kumily and the bus was cancelled. Instead, we got the opportunity to do a really nice 5.5 hour bus ride on winding roads through many small villages and where we had to change bus ‘both in Cherutoni and Kattapanna. Even though the bus ride took longer time than the direct bus it was worth it considering all things we got to see during the ride. It is so easy to use public buses here, there are so many friendly people that helps us on our way and who show us to the right bus.
We had received a tip about a homestay in Kumily before we left Munnar, so we met up with the owner, Ajamal, at the bus station and it proved to be a perfect place to stay during our stay here. The house is located next to the forest outside the town center and tourist area, but it is only a short walk into the city center. Ajamal and his family are very nice and helpful, so we can really recommend to stay with them if you are planning to visit Kumily.
Our plan was to visit the National Park here and we chose to do a tour that included both hiking and bamboo rafting on lake Periyar, because rafting on the lake would increase our chances to see a wild elephant. Despite some planning, we probably chose the worst day weather wise to go hiking and rafting on the waters. Rain showers came after each other and the thunder noise came and went during the day, but it did absolutely nothing because we had an absolutely amazing day, where we got to see so many wild animals! We saw 20 elephants (including three young elephants) and we happened to get close to three elephants when we rounded a small hill. This was not intentional so we had to hurry into the forest to avoid being attacked by the elephants and having to make use of the armed guard that we had with us (that would have been unfortunate). We also got to see a young elephant bathing in the lake and spray down his mother with water in a very playful way. Apparently, it is very rare to see so many elephants at the same time (this was the first time in five days that the elephants showed themselves at all), and the chance is even less to see the shy bison that live in the national park. The bison is even rarer to see than the few tigers that live in the National Park and we got to see 20-30 bisons at different locations during our hike. We also counted in one deer, five wild boars (including one who was mocked by a gang of small birds), wild chickens, a blue scorpion, poisonous spiders, monkeys and lots of birds. We also looked at a cinnamon tree, ginger plants and large turmeric plants that grew in the wild jungle, and it was really good to get to taste fresh turmeric. We also visited a small island that the local villagers use as a fishing camp in the National Park and we saw how they took care of the caught fish.
Happy, tired, wet and one hour late we came back to the entrance of the National Park and thanked our guides and trekking mates for a very special day. We are very aware of the amazing luck we had with the wildlife during the day’s trekking so it did nothing that the tigers chose not to show up this time ;). This is exactly how we want to experience animals; in the wild and on their terms!

Addera lite tobakspulver på det, så håller sig de flesta iglarna borta! Add a little tobacco powder and most of the leeches will stay away!
Tydligen gillar inte elefanter rött, rosa eller lila färger, så Ketakira och jag fick låna t-shirtar av Pontus för att inte öka risken för att elefanter skulle attackera oss! Apparently, elephants do notlike red, pink or purple colors, so Ketakira and Ulrika had to borrow t-shirts from Pontus to decrease the risk that the elephants would attack us!
Vår beväpnade vakt för dagen. Han berättade dock att han aldrig behövt använda vapnet, inte ens för att skjuta ett varningsskott! Our armed guard for the day. However, He told us that he never had to use the weapon, not even to fire a warning shot!

VI hittade ett träd som elefanthonorna änvänder som medicin efter en förlossning. För vad var lite oklart! We found a tree that female elephants uses as medicine after giving birth. For what was a little unclear!

Vi kom till fiskelägret och där fick vi se hur de tog tillvara på dagens fångst! We came to the fishing camp and there we got to see how they took care of the day’s catch!
Vi fick även se en lustig ål med näbb! We also got to see a funny eel with beak!

Vi hittade massor med bison. De är svårfångade på bild då de flyr så fort de upptäcker en. We found lots of bison. They are hard to catch in a photo, because they flee as soon as they discover you.
Vi hittade massor av gurkmejeplantor. Färsk gurkmeja är supergott! We found lots of turmeric plants. Fresh turmeric is super good!
