We took the bus towards the west and crossed a magical line into a new time zone. Two hour bus trip resulted in the time difference to Sweden changing to7 hours, instead of 6. We chose to travel to Valladolid to stay in a more authentic Mexican environment and get a shorter route to Chichen Itza, which was one of the largest cities of the Mayan culture. Buses between Valladolid and Chichen Itza goes several times a day, starting 7:15 in the morning. One tip is to take the morning bus before it becomes so warm, and to arrive before all the tourist buses coming from Cancun and Playa del Carmen. We had a very professional guide who was a Maya Indian and he could tell a lot about their culture and traditions. So gather a small group of tourists in order to bring down the cost per person to pay for such a guide if you get there!

There are so-called cenote’s, sinkholes in the limestone, in all Mayan cities, which supplied the cities with fresh water. These cenote’s was very sacred and there was also ritual sacrifices going on there. Chichen Itza was one of the largest Mayan cities between 600-1200 AD and shows the great knowledge in astronomy and mathematics by the Mayans. In the center of the area is the pyramid “El Castillo” which is built in a way so that twice a year, the shading of the pyramid look like a snake winding its way down from the pyramid towards the holy cenote. This occurs during the spring and autumn equinox and lasts for about 3-7 days and attracts hordes of tourists. There are also several ball courts and the biggest of them, measuring 168×70 meters, is very well preserved. They found hieroglyphs describing the rules of the game, the clothes and the tools they used for the ball game, and the rings where they scored, like basketball hoops were well preserved. The captain of the losing team was beheaded by the winning team’s captain, an honor because they believed in reincarnation. No one knows what happened to the Maya of Chichen Itza, but they left the city in the 1200’s, about 300 years before the Spaniards discovered Mexico today. Several theories have been put forward as to why, but no one can say with certainty whether it was due to crop failure, disease, impure fresh water or some other reason why they abandoned the city. Mayan people still exist today and are scattered in parts of Central America and has been mixed with the Spaniards. It was not until the 1800’s that Chichen Itza became known to the world, and archaeologists did not dig up the town until the 1920’s.

Even today, we could discern which was the Maya Indians in Valladolid just by looking at the form of their skulls. This seems not to be so popular today, because we saw a lot children along with the adults who differed from their parents when it came to the shape of the head!
