The windmills of Zaanse Schans

We visited Zaanse Schans after this village was decided to be the place for a small bubb.la meet up with a Swedish/Japanese family that we wanted to meet. We always try to meet up with like-minded people when we travel around in the world and here in the Netherlands a few fellow bubb.la members currently live.

Zaanse Schans is a village with historic wooden buildings set up with the intention of preserving the historical heritage of the Netherlands. Many of the buildings here were relocated to the Zaanse Schans expansion plan between 1961 and 1974, and restored to their former glory. Only a few of the windmills are still on their original property. It feels like an amusement park, because of the many tourists coming here (2.2 million visited in 2017).  We bought the Zaanse Schans Card 15 Euros (10 Euros for children between 4- 17 and below 4 for free). With the card you can visit several museums free of charge for an entire day. However, the windmills you still have to pay for to enter (5 Euros to enter each windmill).

Some of the windmills of Zaanse Schans on this side of the river: De Huisman (Spices), De Gekroonde Poelenburg (Wood saw), De Kat (Paint), The Seeker (Oil), Bovenkruier (Wood saw), De Os (oil), Het Klaverblad (Wood saw), De Bonte Hen (Oil).

We came to Zaanse Schans in the morning when the weather was a bit colder, but the prognosis was promising sun, so me and Othilia had dressed for that.

We were waiting for our company of today a fellow bubb.la member that we have wanted to meet as soon as we knew we were going to the Netherlands.

Stefan, Aki and their daughter came with the train meeting us and it was so fun to spend a day with this family, we would love to do it again someday.

Zaanse Schans is a created windmill park with old windsmills transported from the whole country to be in the same place. It feels more like an amusement park for tourists, than a genuine village, but the windmills are still running and you can walk into them if you pay 5€ at each entrance. The other houses are museums, some are free and some you need to pay an entrance fee to get in, and others are restaurants, cafes and shops.

The Netherlands are known for clogs (Klomp in Dutch) and we have actually seen normal people walking in those in supermarkets. There is actually a clog making man in Zaanse Schans and a clog museum is a part of his working place.

Clogs in all forms can be found here.

There were a lot of clogs for purchase as well, not just for show!

Putting Othilia in place for the photoshoot I had planned with her dress from Bali, bought by mormor (grandmother) approximately half a year before Othilia was created. The problem was that Othilia only wanted to walk into the water so we had to act fast.

The hat were on her head for approximately 20 seconds before it ended up in the water. The hat was rescued by Stefan, but most of all quick thinking by Aki.

Next to the mills you have other historical buildings that have been transported here.

We decided to walk around in this part to take photos. We had so much to talk about with Stefan and Aki so we didn’t want to end the day to early. Othilia got the other hat, while the yellow hat was drying.

Zaanse Schans!

A garden in Zaanse Schans!

It looked like at least some of the houses here had people living in them!

We visited the museum of Dutch clocks and we could appreciate the craftmanship and work dedicated to these clocks. The boats and whale in the lower part of the clock was actually moving.

The first store opened by Albert Heijn, the largest supermarket chain in Netherlands, has also been moved to Zaanse Schans. The store orginally opened in 1887 in the town of Oostzaan. We said goodbye to Aki and Stefan for this time around, but we would meet Stefan again a few days later.

In the Swedish “bubb.la”

We had to enter the Swedish bubbla, but fortunately for us we have our own “bubb.la” with family and friends that we like to be inside when we are in Sweden. The big day for us is coming closer so we want to spend this last time with family and friends before we will go and welcome our child. This time around it was going to be all about bubbles with a name giving ceremony, bubb.la meet up with Boris and a wonderful bubb.la wedding.

Back on Swedish soil and we realized that we were close to the most Southern point in Sweden – Smygehuk. Also, Ulrika is showing off her week 29 belly.
We visited Smygehuk in the early morning before we headed North, it was going to be a long day on the road for us.

We had lunch in Kalmar and decided to tick another thing off the bucket list. Ulrika has never seen Ölandsbron, the 6 kilometer long bridge that connects the island Öland to the mainland.

We came back to Sweden for Ulrika’s nephew Filip’s name giving ceremony, the secular version of baptism, and to spend time with our families before we need to focus on welcoming our girl to this world.

We celebrated Midsummer, the Swedish feast that is the closest to a national day Sweden has. Here we danced to classical Swedish ballads around a leaf- and flower-covered Phallus.

We got the opportunity to meet and speak with Boris, one half of the podcast “radio bubb.la”. Here he is with Ulrika’s nephew Filip. We also bought a signed copy of his book ” Inte mitt krig” about the death of the Swedish leftist movement during the 70’s and how they instead infiltrated the institutions causing the Swedish state to swell into an enormous bureaucratic and socialist apparatus, which is the main reason why today’s Sweden is collapsing.

You can find the book here at Cultura Aetatis,  the publishing house under the bubb.la umbrella.

We also got the opportunity to dress up to celebrate the union of our friends Martin and Sofia, the founders of project bubb.la and radio bubb.la. Ulrika found a dress that she could wear at 30 weeks of pregnancy.

It was a lovely ceremony in Stockholm and Boris was the marriage officiant. Thank you Martin and Sofia for letting us be part of your special day.

the first dance as a married couple!

We headed back to Ulrika’s family to spend more time with them. Filip loves water so we took him to Högbosjön one day.

He didn’t hesitate to get in the water even though the water temperature was far from the indoor baby pool he is used to.

We also spent one day at Furuvik, an amusement park and zoo, near Gävle and we chose a nice day to be here, Sweden played against South Korea at the World Soccer Championship, so we were almost alone in the park.

We had a barbecue party with a few of Ulrika’s cousins.

and “det lilla livet” got her first pair of shoes from Linnéa, one of Ulrika’s cousins. Thank you Linnéa!

” Det lilla livet” has gotten a lot of things from both mormor (maternal grandmother), moster (maternal auntie) and friends, so it was time to organize our girl’s things.

It was time for our girl to get her own back pack and for us to gather all her things. It is only two month left before she will be here, so from now on her back pack will travel with us.

The Corax Conference 2017

Corax Conference 2017 blew us away! Ever since we heard about the 2016 conference, we knew that we wanted to attend this year’s version and we bought our tickets before the first speakers even were announced. When the first line of speakers finally were revealed, we knew that we were in for a treat. Corax conference aimed to cover most viewpoints existing under the big umbrella called Libertarianism and we think that they did a really good job attracting diverse speakers from different standpoints. Most interesting was to hear from Professor Hans-Herman Hoppe and his clarification of his and his predecessor Murray Rothbard’s visions of Libertarianism.  We highly recommend purchasing a remote ticket so you can listen to his and the rest of the speakers talks from the Corax conference.

However, the most controversial talk of the conference was surprisingly Jeff Deist’s speech, which was broadcasted from Mises University, and we can’t understand why really. We can highly recommend listening to Tom Woods show episode 966, where you’ll find the whole speech and good points from Tom Woods, really explaining why this speech is nothing more than highlighting the importance of decentralization.

Ulrika also thought that talking to and listening to Julie Borowski was especially fun, since she has been following Julies work on Youtube for several years now. That’s why she gets the honor of being on the first picture in this blog post. More about the conference can be read in the figure texts.  We had a fantastic week on Malta, so thanks to Bubb.la/Cor.ax for making this happen!

Julie Borowski, one of the speakers that Ulrika was looking forward to listen to. Her Libertarian Youtube-channel is funny and makes Libertarian viewpoints accessible on topics that are discussed today. Libertarianism in social media was her main topic during this conference.

Sofia and Martin, the founders of bubb.la and Cor.ax, made this conference happen. There aren’t any conferences in the world that gather speakers from such different stand-points that can be found under the big umbrella called Libertarianism, so we didn’ẗ want to miss this for the world.

The main speaker was the legendary Professor Hans-Herman Hoppe, a rare sight on the international speaker scene. We feel blessed to have had the opportunity to listen to his current viewpoint.

Adam Kokesh, the NOT president of the USA 2020, was also a speaker on the conference. We had the pleasure of listening to Adam last year on the Anarchapulco conference in Acapulco. He will do a European tour 2018 and he will come to Sweden, so don’t miss him when he comes to your country!

Matthew Reece, writer on the Zeroth Position, had a great lecture about the neo-reactionary and the alt-right movement. Highly informative.

This is Corax conference for us. Matthew Reece and Adam Kokesh wouldn’t be invited to the same conferences in the US, but here they could meet and have a discussion on stage, a rare event in the Libertarian movement. Unfortunately, Adam had to leave early so we just have to look forward to the next time Matthew and Adam can meet on stage.

Jeff Deist, the president of the Mises Institute  in the US, held an interesting lecture on decentralization for both us and the Mises University with the help of Skype and cameras. It was one of the best speeches we listened to and it was also one of the most controversial apparently. We highly recommend you to listen to the Tom Woods episode linked above in the text, if you want to learn more about what Jeff actually said. Also in the picture, Hans-Herman Hoppe waving to the Mises University attendants.

Brendan O’Neill, a Marxist-Libertarian journalist from Spiked online. He talked about his case for a Libertarian-marxism, but we found it confused and we didn’t agree with his advocacy for democracy.

Bubb.las own doomster ;), Johnny Mellgren, held a spot on lecture about the next financial crisis.

Other speakers were not familiar to us, but were very interesting. Moritz Bierling held two lectures during the conference. The first one was a Jordan Peterson-inspired lecture about SYSO – Sorting YourSelf Out, instead of the degenerative YOLO (You only live ones)-view of life.

The second lecture was about the internet phenomenon memes and trolling, and what it means.

We got good laughs from his lecture. We were really bad at taking photos, so we don’t have any pictures from the Lichtenstein as a Libertarian utopia lecture by Andreas Kohl or the lecture about free economic zones in the world by Simon Sarevski, which is a shame.

We do have one blurry picture of Simon wearing his T-shirt displaying a nice quote by Bastiat.

We found more nice T-shirts worn by other conference attendants.

Dinners and activities were also on the schedule, so we had the chance to talk to each other all night if we wanted.

Or take sneaky pictures on Hoppe! Btw love the look on Sofia’s face when she discovers what Pontus is doing 🙂

We also met friends that we haven’t seen in a long time. We had the pleasure to get to know these guys in Acapulco last year. It was great catching up with Shamus and David on Malta.

We noticed a stricking resemblance between Pontus and Aron Askew, the campaign manager of Adam Kokesh’s presidential campaign.

We also had time to enjoy the cliffs of Malta before we left the conference. Pontus is not naked 😉

Last, but not least, we want to thank Sofia, the organizer of this Conference, for this excellent and well-organized week and we hope to meet you again soon!

Corax Conference on Malta

We are excited for the Corax conference on Malta, which will take place 28-30 July this summer. Ulrika monitored the day of ticket release earlier this winter, so that we would not miss out on the desirable tickets. Only 150 tickets are released to the Corax conference. Cor.ax is the international edition of the Swedish Libertarian news aggregator bubb.la, and we are extremely happy to get hold of two tickets. The first speakers have already been announced and the line up looks very promising. The legendary Hans Hermann Hoppe will be speaking at the conference, as well as Julie Borowski, that Ulrika follows on Youtube and twitter, and Adam Kokesh, that we listened to when we were at Anarchapulco 2016. The reason that the Corax conference takes place in Malta is that the founders of bubb.la /cor.ax, Sofia Arkestål and Martin Eriksson, have migrated to Malta. We visited them this winter before we started our trip in Southeast Asia, and Ulrika has finally edited the pictures from our visit to Malta and uploaded them to the blog. You can see below what is waiting for you if you are going to Malta this summer. It will be very fun to meet more bubb.la and cor.ax people this summer – hope to see you at the Corax Conference!

Flying to Malta in January 2017.

We left Sweden covered in winter for a bit warmer weather.

Our mission was to explore the island and hang out with the Swedish ancap community on Malta. Here having dinner with a few of them.

First day we walked around in the capital, Valletta, and visited S:t Johns Co-Cathedral, a Baroque church built in 1572. The church is known for the architecture and the paintings by the great artists from that time. The most notable is the oil painting “The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist”, which was created by Caravaggio. We were not allowed to take pictures there, but we can tell you that it was one the most extraordinary paintings we have seen so far. You should go to see both the church and the painting if you’re ever find yourself in Valletta. Below you’ll find a slideshow with more photos from this place.

Photos from S:t Johns Co-Cathedral and Valletta:

On our second day on Malta, we decided to try out their public transportation system. The infrastructure on Malta works great and for 1.5 Euro (2 Euro during the summer), you can ride the buses for 2 hours before purchasing another ticket. You pay in cash to the driver and then you sit down and enjoy the ride. The good thing is that you can go almost anywhere on the islands during that time, so we decided to jump on a bus that could take us to the west side of the island.

Our goal today was the Dingli cliffs that Ulrika had spotted while coming in for landing, and she immediately said that she wanted to visit those cliffs. We changed bus in Mdina and our second bus broke down, so we had time for a coffee while waiting for the next bus.

The Dingli Cliffs. Most people watch them from the road, but we’re not most people so we hiked down the limestone rocks to get as close to the edge as possible.

Finally next to the edge and Ulrika is making good use of our new camera. More picture from the Dingli cliffs can be found in the slideshow below.

On our third day on Malta, Sofia felt well enough to come with us to explore Marsaxlokk, a fishing village in the southeast part of Malta.

Seafood was our choice for lunch and it was the best octopus we’ve ever tried.

Most of Malta is beige, so nice coming to Marsaxlokk and seeing all the colorful boats at the harbor.

We also walked along the coast looking at the industrial parts of the harbor.

More pictures from Marsaxlokk and Zejtun can be found in the slideshow below.

Thanks Sofia for a wonderful day.

Sliema has a big Swedish expat community living there. Malta has favorable tax system so you’ll find a lot of Swedish people here working in the online casino industry and online loans industry. You’ll find “little Sweden”, a grocery shop with Swedish favorite food brands, including a “lösgodishylla”, a Swedish Pick-n-mix sweets shelf. You’ll find more pictures from the shop in the slideshow below.

The Maltese are mostly Catholic, so you’ll find a lot of churches here. Maltese people are also very fond of cats so in Sliema, you’ll find a park inhabited by street cats that the Maltese people take care of and feed voluntarily.

Paceville is the backpacker place and the party streets, where you find these kind of places.

We returned to Sweden after five days on Malta to plan our present trip. However, we will see the island again in July when the Corax Conference is scheduled!

Annalkande storm av anarkister! / Approaching storm of anarchists!

(Please scroll down to the orange text for the English version)

Enjoy 🙂

We had now found an accommodation and it was time to get to know all the ancaps here in Acapulco! It was an exponential increase of anarchists which started two weeks before the conference, so there was a lot of people to meet up with. Therefore, the number of meetings and activities also intensified. Here we give you a cavalcade of pictures of what we did and the people we met during that time rather than trying to describe it in text! Enjoy 🙂

We attended a regular meet up and we got to meet some of the local anarchists in Acapulco! Here we are with the Freeman family!

Welcome to our new blog! Not much has changed on the surface of our blog, so most of the work for Ulrika has been on what is not really visible. It is fortunate that Ulrika did not know how much work it is to move a blog, otherwise she might not started this project in the first place. Many hours of learning, with a lot of frustration, but now it feels easier to play web designer and code writer. The experience has made Ulrika make a promise to give words of encouragement to people who actually work with moving and designing blogs, you are doing a great job!

A lot has happened since we last wrote a blog post that we want to share with you. Firstly, we have finally made contact with anarcho-capitalists here in Mexico and it turned out that our new friend Pete lives in San Cristobal del las Casas, so we met up for dinner and wine one of the last evenings for us in San Cristobal. It was so nice to meet a like-minded person and have sensible discussions about everything from small everyday experiences to global events. We compared Sweden and New Zealand and a lot of nodding in agreement happened when we did. It will be fun to meet again in Acapulco in a month!
Secondly, our dear news site has grown a step and now offer premium services for 5 Euro a month, so now you can support the bubb.la project entirely in a libertarian spirit based on voluntarism, unlike the socialist state media that is called SVT and SR. Bubb.la is our primary source of news about what is happening in Sweden and the world, and it is also through bubb.la that we have found other libertarian blogs and news sites. Would you like to support the project and get interesting, libertarian news in your feed or as a podcast, just follow these links: facebook, home page, podcast and premium service.
The founders of bubb.la has also moved to warmer climates and Sofia, one of the founders, also has her own blog that you should check out (it’s in swedish)! We also link to the blog to the right, Sofia Arkestål – Political refugee!
Thirdly, we have also changed our location, and exchanged warm sweaters and caps with beach and bikini, but more on that in the next post!

We finally got to experience Sipadan and we couldn’t imagine beforehand what to expect, but we can say that our high expectations were certainly fulfilled! Sipadan has been appointed as one of the most beautiful dive sites in the world for its diversity of marine life and the clear water. Sipadan is a small volcanic island and just off shore the coral reef drops 600 metres before reaching the ocean bottom. You are diving next to a huge coral wall! The wildlife is amazing here and we have seen sharks, giant turtles, barracudas, scorpion fish, moray eels, octopuses and a lot of different colorful fishes (large and small), snails and corals in all forms and colors. It is as if all the fish in Sipadan is on steroids, because they are very large compared to fishes in other places we’ve been diving in the past. We did three dives at Sipadan, “South Point”, “Barracuda Point” and “Midreef”, and although all the dive sites were amazing, the highlight was “Barracuda Point” where we ended up in a school of  big barracudas and where sharks and turtles showed up everywhere! We also managed to dive down to 31 meters when we chased after a shark to catch it swimming with our GoPro camera. We’ll post the assembled videos from the dives below, so you can get an idea of what awaits you if you dive here, however, you’ll see much more colors yourself than what our camera could pick up.

As for security here, there are military bases on each island (those belonging to Malaysia) and we felt very safe when seeing soldiers with machine guns on their backs when we were on Sipadan and good to know is that parts of the island is off-limits to tourists because of the military presence. We have also seen military boats at sea and security guards with machine guns that patrols the streets of Semporna. The latter is due to the increased security risks following the kidnapping in the town of Sandakan (located a bit north of Semporna) a few weeks ago. Apparently, wealthy Chinese tourists  are the targets (according to rumors) and the general advice is that tourists should neither move outside the tourist areas in the darkness, nor walk on the beach after dark.

Here is a little more information about the actual trip to Semporna from Kota Kinabalu. We took the bus from the bus terminal in Inanam located about 10 km outside KK. The best way to get from KK to Inanam is by bus which cost 1.5 ringgit (if you do not want to pay for the taxi). There are several buses that goes from the center of KK to Inanam, but we found it a bit tricky to find the right bus stop. Hovewer, we found bus No. 4 and it starts from Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman (southbound direction, after the roundabout near the hotel Shangri-La) and a tip is to be out in time when there is much traffic (it took 50 minutes for us to get out to Inanam). Night bus from Inanam to Semporna was not the most comfortable way to travel and we did not get much sleep especially since the police got on the bus quarter to three in the morning and checked everybody’s identity documents, but we came to the right place and arrived in Semporna half past five in the morning.

We also want to promote a great news site (mostly in swedish) that picks out the libertarian cherries in the news flow both in Sweden and abroad. Bubb.la has now existed for one year (congratulations!) and it started as a crowdfunding project by Martin Eriksson and Sofia Arkestål and we of course gave our support! We have also contributed as co-editors by selecting news, adding headers and voting up different co-editors contributions (while we were still in Sweden). So if you’re tired of the states socialist propaganda by “independent” media we think that you definitely should check out bubb.la:s website, facebook and twitter! But the best way is probably to follow the Bubb.la newsfeed through your choise of RSS reader. The editors do a very good job of making their own headlines with an libertarian touch to the news, and it can be really hilarious headlines from time to time 🙂
