170 mil senare! / 1 056 miles later!

Vi har nu kommit fram till Jodhpur som ligger i Rajasthan i nordvästra Indien, ca 30 mil från den pakistanska gränsen. Jodhpur eller den blåa staden är ännu ett ställe som Rubia och Sumantra rekommenderade oss att se innan vi lämnar Indien och det ska bli spännande att utforska staden. Resan har gått bra och en intressant iakttagelse som vi gjort när vi åkt tåg är att transvestiter hoppar på tågen, klappar händer framför en person och vidrör sedan pannan innan de ber om pengar. Vi undrar vad det betyder, mer än att vilja få pengar förstås.
Så vad gör man när man har två dygn och 170 mil att slå ihjäl på en buss och ett tåg? Man läser såklart böcker och lyssnar på podcasts, så här kommer våra tips på bra böcker att läsa och podcasts att lyssna på.

Mises.se (podcast, svenska)

Götterdämmerung (svenska)– Ett trevligt avsnitt om bostadsbubblan och vilken dålig position som svenska staten satt sig i när de låtit ränteavdraget vara kvar och mycket mera.
Yuri Maltsev om livet i Sovjetunionen (engelska) – Fantastiskt intressant avsnitt där Yuri berättar om hur han först kom i kontakt med frihetliga ideér när han under endast en natt i hemlighet läste boken Vägen till träldom av Friedrich von Hayek. Hade han blivit påkommen av KGB så hade han fått 6 års fängelse och personen som gett boken till honom hade fått 12 års fängelse för spridning av anti-sovjetiskt förtal under artikel 57 av USSR brottskod. Förutom om hur det var att leva i sovjetunionen och hans flykt till friheten i USA via Sverige så får vi även veta att han har en bild av Che Guevara på sitt kontor. Men det det är inte vilken bild som helst utan en där bilden är en mosaik av 2700 människor som Che Guvevara personligen avrättade.

Frihetsfaxen (podcast, svenska)

Johanna Jablonski – Johanna pratar om hur hon blev anka då hon insåg varför hon hade så svårt att hitta ett jobb och att det är staten via alla skatter och regleringar som gjort henne (och alla andra) fruktansvärt dyra och riskabla att anställa. Det pratas en hel del om djur också, speciellt hästar. Johannas blogg kan ni hitta här.

The Tom woods show (podcast, engelska)

Anarkokapitalism eller anarkosocialism – Avsnitt som handlar om varför det är så viktigt med privat äganderätt och varför ett samhälle utan äganderätt (exemeplvis kommunism) kommer leda till en massa konflikter.

Frédéric Bastiat (bok)

Det man ser och det man inte ser– Jättebra bok om varför skatter och regleringar aldrig leder till ökad välstånd för medborgaren i landet. De flesta kan se vad de får för skatterna (väldigt lite, jämför med hur mycket man tvingas betala in), men det viktiga är att alltid se vad som skulle varit där istället det vill säg det som inte syns. Han tar upp exempel som hur ett krossat fönster aldrig kan öka välståndet för ett samhälle trots att vissa vill hävda att det ger ett jobb till glasreparatören, som i sin tur kan betala bagaren som i sin tur kan betala sotaren osv för det är det man ser. Vad man inte ser är vad ägaren till fönstret kunde ha gjort med dessa pengar om han inte behövde betala glasreparatören för det trasiga fönstret. Trots att boken skrevs för 160 år sedan är den fortfarande lika relevant idag.

Ernest Hemingway (bok)

Den gamle och havet– Väldigt fin novell om en mans kamp med en fisk. Den handlar också om fattigdom och hur man värnar om varandra i små samhällen. Väldigt fint skriven och man blir berörd av att läsa om den gamle mannens sätt att vända negativa tankar till sin fördel och hålla modet uppe när andra för länge sedan skulle ha givit upp.

Jodhpur or the blue city, is another place that Rubia and Sumantra recommended us to see before we left India. The journey here went fine and an interesting observation we made when we have taken the trains in India is that transvestites are jumping on trains and they clap ther hands in front of a person and then touch the forehead before they ask for money. We wonder what that means, more than wanting to get money of course.
So what do you do when you have two days and 1056 miles to kill on a bus and a train? Reading books and listening to podcasts of course, so here are our tips on good books to read and podcasts to listen to.

Mises.se (podcast, Swedish)

Götterdämmerung (Swedish) – A nice episode about the housing bubble and the poor position that the Swedish government is in when they let the interest tax-deduction be retained, and much more.
Yuri Maltsev about life in the Soviet Union (English) – Very interesting episode in which Yuri Maltsev tells how he first came in contact with libertarian ideas when he was one night secretly reading the book “The Road to the Serfdom” by Friedrich Hayek. Had he been caught by the KGB, he had received six years in prison and the person who gave the book to him had been given 12 years in jail for spreading anti-Soviet slander under Article 57 of the USSR criminal code. In addition to what it was like to live in the Soviet Union and his escape to freedom in the United States via Sweden, we also get to know that he has a picture of Che Guevara in his office. The image of Che Guevara is a mosaic picture of 2700 people that Che Guvevara personally executed.

Johanna Jablonski – Johanna talks about how she became an ancap when she realized why she had such difficulty to find a job and how the state through taxes and regulations had made her (and everyone else) horribly expensive and risky to hire. They also talk a lot about animals too, especially horses. You can find her blog here.

Anarcho-capitalism or anarcho-socialism? – An episode about why it is so important to have private ownership and why a society without property rights (like communism) will lead to a lot of conflicts.

Frédéric Bastiat (book)

What is seen and what is not seen– Great book about why taxes and regulations never lead to prosperity for the citizens in a country. Most people can see what they are getting for the taxes they have been forced to pay (very little, compared to how much you have to pay), but the important thing is to be able to see what could have been there instead, to always think about what is not seen. He takes up such things as how a broken window can never increase the wealth of a society, although some would argue that it gives work to the glass repairman, who in turn can pay the baker, which in turn can pay the chimney sweep, etc … for that is what you can see. What you do not see is what the owner of the window could have done with that money if he did not have to pay the glass repairman for the broken window. Although the book was written 160 years ago, it is still relevant today.

Ernest Hemingway (book)

The old man and the sea – Very nice short story about a man’s struggle with a fish. It is also about poverty and how you take care of each other in small communities. The book is nicely written and it is interesting to read about the old man’s way to reverse negative thoughts and keep his spirits up when others would long since have given up.

Bangkok för andra och tredje gången!

De sista dagarna i Thailand spenderades i Bangkok och detta är tredje gången för Pontus och andra gången för Ulrika som vi är där. Vi kände inte för att bo i gamla delarna av Bangkok, så vi hittade ett billigt hotell (med pool) längs med tunnelbanelinjen. Vi hängde mycket vid poolen, men vi åkte också till Chatuchakmarknaden och besökte den bokhandel där Pontus av en slump hittade boken med stort B 2010 som ledde till hans stora intresse av ekonomi och politik (social vetenskap) och inte bara naturvetenskap, och som påbörjade banan till att bli anarkokapitalist. Boken är: The Third Wave av Alvin Toffler från 1980.

Därefter var det dags att säga adjö till Thailand och hej till Malaysia. Vi tog nattåget (som är väldigt mysigt och skönt och 24 timmar senare hade vi passerat den enklaste passkontrollen hittills och vi var i Malaysia. Första intrycket av Malaysia var fantastiskt och det förtjänar en helt egen bloggpost som kommer härnäst!

Avslutar med två bokrecensioner av utlästa böcker:

“The man who mistook his wife for a hat” av Oliver Sacks

Oliver Sacks är neurolog och författare, som i denna bok har samlat fallbeskrivningar av människor vilka han träffat genom åren genom sitt yrke. Boken tar upp personer som har olika dysfunktioner (medfödda eller förvärvade genom trauma) och genom att porträttera dessa personer vill han visa vilken fantastisk hjärna vi har och vad som kan hända när olika delar av hjärnan skadas. Ulrika har använt några av dessa fallbeskrivningar när hon undervisade för sjukgymnasterna och hon har länge velat läsa denna bok! Ulrika gillade denna bok väldigt mycket!

“Give me liberty”, flera författare

Denna bok hittade vi i en bokaffär i Chiang Mai och den innehåller en samling noveller skrivna av olika Science fiction-författare på temat frihet (Lloyd biggle Jr, Christopher Anvil, Vernor Vinge, Murray Leinster, Alfred Elton van Vogt, Katherine Maclean och Charles de Vet, Frank Herbert (Dune-serien) och Eric Frank Russel). Väldigt intressanta noveller som bland annat tar upp hur teknikutvecklingen leder till minskad makt för stater och ökad anarkism, privat polis och rättsväsende! Novellerna utspelar sig både på jorden och på andra fiktiva planeter. Det är en väldigt rolig bok med intressanta tankeexperiment!

The last days in Thailand was spent in Bangkok and this is the third time for Pontus and the second time for Ulrika we are there. We didn’t feel like staying in the old part of Bangkok, so we found a cheap hotel (with pool) along the metro line. We hung out a lot at the pool, but we also went to the Chatuchak weekend market and visited the used books store where Pontus found the book with large B in 2010, which led to his great interest in economics and politics (social science) in addition to mainly natural science, and that started the path to becoming an anarcho capitalist. The book is: The Third Wave by Alvin Toffler, from 1980.

Then it was time to say goodbye to Thailand and hello to Malaysia. We took the night train (which is very cozy and comfortable, and 24 hours later we had passed the simplest passport control so far and we were in Malaysia. First impression of Malaysia was fantastic and it deserves its own blog post which comes next!

We will end with two book reviews:

“The man who mistook his wife for a hat”, by Oliver Sacks

Oliver Sacks is a neurologist and author, who has collected case stories in this book of people he met through the years, who have different dysfunctions (congenital or acquired through trauma) that shows the amazing brain we have and what can happen when various parts of the brain is damaged. Ulrika has used some of these cases when she held lectures for physiotherapists and she has long wanted to read this book! Ulrika liked this book very much!

“Give Me Liberty”, several authors

This book we found in a bookstore in Chiang Mai and it is a collection of short stories written by various science fiction writers on the theme of freedom (Lloyd Biggle Jr., Christopher Anvil, Vernor Vinge, Murray Leinster, Alfred Elton van Vogt, Katherine MacLean and Charles de Vet, Frank Herbert (Dune series) and Eric Frank Russell). Very interesting stories about how the development of technology leads to reduced power of the state and increased anarchism, private police and justice! The stories take place both on earth and on other fictional planets. It is a very funny book with interesting thought experiment!

Vi kom till Bangkok efter 6 timmars buss från Sukhothai. Vi fick promenera genom den fina Chatuchakparken för att ta oss till tunnelbanan från busstationen! We came to Bangkok after 6 hour bus from Sukhothai. We got to walk through the nice Chatuchak Park to reach the subway from the bus station!

Ulrika tyckte att personen i mitten på en reklambild i tunnelbanan liknade Pontus litegrann. Ulrika thought that the person in the middle of an advertisement in the metro resembled Pontus.

Vårat hotell låg inte i turistdistrikten, så vi hittade mysiga små matställen där vi fick peka på bilder för att beställa! Väldigt gott! Our hotel was not situated in any of the tourist districts, so we found cozy little eateries where we got to order food using pictures! Very tasty!

Vi hängde vid poolen och tittade på åskmoln! We hung out at the pool and watched the thunderclouds!

Bokrecensioner om anarkism och kodknäckare

Nu kommer några inlägg på kort tid efter varandra, så ni får lite att läsa! Vi har även hunnit läsa en del böcker och här kommer två recensioner av väldigt intressanta böcker! Ulrika har hunnit läsa båda två och Pontus hälsar att han är snart klar med The Code av Thomas Singh!

“No Treason: The Constitution of No Authority”, by Lysander Spooner

Lysander Spooner är en berömd anarkistisk tänkare och han är också känd för att ha konkurrerat med den amerikanska staten om postutdelning, där staten ville ha monopol på det, så de tvingade honom i konkurs (även om han levererade post mycket snabbare och billigare än staten!). Tyngdpunkten i boken är hur konstitutionen i USA är ett illegitimt kontrakt som inte kan tvingas på människor som aldrig undertecknat det. Detta innebär att du är en slav under konstitutionen och har ingen frihet! Han likställer också stater med rövare och mördare, och att det inte är skillnad mellan en rånare som tar dina pengar direkt från dig genom pistolhot och människor som röstar på politiker som sedan tar dina pengar genom beskattning. “No Treason” skrevs för nästan 150 år sedan, men den är minst lika relevant i dag, så läs den!

“The Code: How to make it, break it, hack it, crack it”, av Thomas Singh

Thomas Singh är också författare till “Fermats sista sats” som vi har recenserat tidigare. Denna bok handlar om kryptografi och konkurrensen genom historien mellan de som vill utveckla koder för att dölja information och de som vill knäcka koder för att få tag på information. Boken går igenom antikens kodersystem, komplotten att mörda Elizabeth I av England konstruerad av bla Maria Stuart av Skottland, till byggandet av Enigma-maskinen och hur polska (och senare brittiska) kodknäckare kunde lösa koden under andra världskriget. Den tar också upp födelsen av asymmetrisk kryptering (RSA) med privata och publika nycklar som numera tillåter oss att skicka information och göra säkra betalningar över internet utan av att på förhand distribuera nycklar, genom att använda matematiska funktioner med primtal och faktorisering. Kryptering spelar nu en viktig roll i kampen för personlig frihet och denna bok är en väldigt bra introduktion till detta fascinerande område.

“No Treason: The Constitution of No Authority”, by Lysander Spooner

Lysander Spooner is a famous anarchist thinker and he is also known for competing with the US post office, where the state wanted monopoly on that so they forced him out of business (even though he delivered mail much faster and cheaper than the state!). The main focus of the book is how the Constitution in the US are illegitimate as a contract and can’t be forced upon people who never signed it. This means that your are a slave under the constitution and have no freedom! He also states that the government are robbers and murderers and that is no different between a robber who take your money directly from gunpoint and people voting on politicians who then take your money through taxation. “No Treason” was written almost 150 years ago, but it is still relevant today, so read it!

“The Code: How to make it, break it, hack it, crack it”, by Thomas Singh

Thomas Singh is also the author of “Fermats last theorem that we have reviewed earlier. This book is all about cryptography and the competition throughout history between those who want to develop codes to hide information and those who want to break the code to get hold of information. The book goes through ancient coding system, the plot drawn by Mary of Scotland to assain Elizabeth I of England and the construction of the enigma machine and how the polish (and later british) cryptoanalysts could break it during the second world war. It also takes up the birth of asymmetric cryptography (RSA) with private and public keys that nowadays allows us to send information and do safe payments over the internet without the need for prior key distribution, relaying on one way mathematical functions with primes and factorisation. Cryptography is now playing a vital role in the fight for freedom and personal liberty and this book is a great introduction to this fascinating field.

Vad vi gör när vi inte turistar

Vi försöker blanda dagar med turistande och sightseeing med dagar då vi gör saker som vi länge har velat ha tid att ägna oss åt. Det innebär i huvudsak studerande av olika slag. Pontus studerar fortsatt i huvudsak olika saker relaterade till Bitcoin (liksom de senaste 4 åren!). Ulrika har börjat lära sig programmering i Python och hon tycker det är väldigt intressant och kul! Kursen hon följer är lpthw. Det är verkligen en “hands on”-kurs som du inte får mycket gratis ifrån. Kan även inflika att en av övningarna var att lyckas installera spelet Zork på linux och spela det. Sedan kodar hon småpogram som Pontus får prova!

Vissa dagar spenderar vi alltså den mesta tiden framför våra datorer förutom pauser för mat och dryck =)

Vi läser också en del böcker. Av böcker som Pontus nyligen läst så skulle han vilja rekommendera böckerna nedan och Ulrika inflikar att hon håller på med flera böcker samtidigt så recensioner av dem kommer när de är utlästa!

“Freedom” – Adam Kokesh
En oerhört bra, kort och kristallklart skriven bok som jag rekommenderar alla att läsa! I 10 korta kapitel förklaras frihetens filosofi, en kortfattad historik om makt, samt staters skadliga inverkan i människors liv gällande krig, personlig säkerhet, beskattning, ekonomi, arbete, skola, sjukvård, välfärd, förbudspolitik, miljöskydd, Intellektuell äganderätt, kärlek, familj, barns rättigheter, och racism. Boken ger en mestadels positiv bild över utvecklingen senaste åren och en hoppfull bild över framtiden. Boken finns att ladda ner gratis här både i text och som ljudbok, endast 3h kort som ljudbok! Jag köpte den på Amazon till Kindle för $1. Mycket prisvärt! =)

“The 4-hour workweek” – Timothy Ferris
En intressant bok fullspäckad med kloka råd som handlar om att arbeta så effektivt som möjligt och vara så produktiv som möjligt. Tim ger många verktyg och tips för att arbeta så effektivt som möjligt och att slösa så lite som möjligt av sin egen och andras tid. Den stora boven som beskrivs är arbete för arbetes skull, att fokusera på att vara sysselsatt istället för att vara produktiv. Istället bör man fokusera och prioritera, framförallt bortprioritera allt som inte gör dig lycklig och ger resultat. Vilka 20% av dina arbetsuppgifter orsakar 80% av din olycka? Vilka 20% av ditt arbete bidrar till 80% av resultatet och gör dig mest lycklig. Hur kan du göra för att slippa de första arbetsuppgifterna och kan du koncentrera mer av din arbetstid på de senare? Koncentrera dig på det som du gör bäst och som endast du kan göra och eliminera eller delegera allt annat. I boken beskrivs hur man kan starta ett eget företag steg för steg och successivt delegera ut alla arbetsuppgifter och ta bort sig själv som flaskhals för företagets expansion. Boken är skriven både för anställda som vill öka sin produktivitet och fria tid och för egna företagare.

“Defending the undefendable” – Walter Block
Genom att analysera och försvara hur de mest avskydda och utstötta i samhället agerar utan att initiera våld så visar Walter Block vilka viktiga produktiva ekonomiska bidrag alla aktörer i en fri marknad ger och vilken skada det gör att förbjuda dessa aktiviteter. En bok som på ett nyttigt sätt får en att ifrågasätta förutfattade meningar och känslomässiga reaktioner på företelser som de flesta ser med avsky på.

We try to mix days with tourist stuff and sightseeing with days when we do things that we have long wanted to have time to devote ourselves to. It essentially means studies of various kinds. Pontus studies things related to Bitcoin (as the past 4 years!). Ulrika has started to learn programming in Python, and she thinks it is very interesting and fun! The course she follows is lpthw. It really is a ‘hands on’ course you do not get much free from. One of the exercises was to install the game Zork on linux and play it. Then she codes small pograms that Pontus then get to try!

So some days we spend most of the time in front of our computers, besides breaks for food and drink =)

We also read some books. Of the books that Pontus recently read he would like to recommend the ones reviewed below. Ulrika is reading multiple books simultaneously so reviews of them will come when they are finished!

“Freedom” – Adam Kokesh
An extremely good, short and clear written book that I recommend everyone to read! 10 short chapters explaining the philosophy of freedom, a brief history of power, as well as the States adverse impact in people’s lives regarding war, personal security, taxation, economics, work, school, medical care, welfare, prohibition policy, environmental protection, intellectual property rights, love, family, children’s rights, and racism. The book offers a mostly positive picture of the development in recent years and a hopeful view of the future. The book is available to download here both in text and audio book, only 3h short audiobook! I bought it on Amazon for the Kindle for $ 1. Great Value! =)

“The 4-hour workweek” – Timothy Ferris
A very interesting book packed with advice that is all about working as efficiently as possible and be as productive as possible. Tim provides many tools and tips to work as efficiently as possible and to waste as little as possible of your own and others’ time. The big culprit that is described is work for labor’s sake, to focus on being busy instead of being productive. Instead you should focus and prioritize, especially prioritize away everything that does not make you happy and gives results. Which 20% of your tasks causes 80% of your unhappiness? Which 20% of your work contributes to 80% of income and makes you happiest. How can you do to avoid the first tasks and concentrate more of your work on the latter? Concentrate on what you do best that only you can do and eliminate or delegate everything else. The book describes how to start your own business step by step and gradually delegate all duties and remove yourself as a bottleneck for the company’s expansion. The book is written both for employees who want to increase their productivity and free time and for entrepeneurs.

“Defending the undefendable” – Walter Block
By analyzing and defending the most despised and outcast of society acting without initiating violence, Walter Block shows the important productive economic contribution of all participants in a free market and what harm it does to prohibit such activities. This book makes you really question the preconceptions and emotional responses to behaviours that most people look with indignation at.

Da Nang, Monkey mountain och strandhäng

Da Nang är en liten, stor stad med internationella kontakter och med hav och natur precis utanför stadskärnan. Det är en sådan här stad som vi letar efter så vi trivdes väldigt bra! Vi hyrde en moped för att kunna se så mycket som möjligt på den korta tid som vi var där och sista dagen i Da Nang spenderades med att läsa bok och lyssna på podcasts vid en undangömd strand längs med apberget (Monkey mountain). På eftermiddagen tog vi mopeden upp på berget som är ca 850 meter över havet och fick en härlig utsikt över Da Nang.

Ulrika har läst ut “The moon is a harsh mistress” av Robert A. Heinlein och den var väldigt bra! Boken utspelar sig år 2075 då månen har blivit koloniserad (kallad Luna). Kolonierna är spridda över månen och befolkningen på Luna är brottslingar, politiska flyktingar eller ättlingar till dem. Luna styrs av föreståndare från jorden, men i praktiken har de ingen reell makt då Luna-samhället inte är organiserat. Luna-befolkningen är slavar under förenta nationerna och deras uppdrag är att odla mat som sedan skickas tillbaka till jorden. Men nu stundar en revolution då maten har blivit otillräcklig på månen. “There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch” är ett libertarianskt motto som genomsyrar boken! Det är en mycket bra bok som tar upp libertarianska frågor och tacklar dem på månen. Jag kan verkligen rekommendera boken. Denna bok är på gång att bli film också och jag hoppas verkligen att de behåller de politiska budskapen i filmen!

Nu har vi tagit tåget till Huê och här ska vi planera vår inresa till Laos! Huê var tidigare huvudstaden i Vietnam innan kommunisterna tog makten och den ska tydligen vara känd för sin arkitektur, så det tänkte vi utforska någon av de kommande dagarna!

Da Nang is a small, big town with international connections, and the sea and nature just outside the city center. It is this kind of city we’re looking for so we liked it very much! We rented a scooter to see as much as possible during the short time we were staying there and the last day in Da Nang was spent reading books and listening to podcasts on a secluded beach alongside Monkey Mountain. In the afternoon we took the scooter up the mountain, which is about 850 meters above sea level, and we got to see a lovely view of Da Nang.

Ulrika has finished reading “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” by Robert A. Heinlein and it was very good! The book takes place in 2075 and the moon has been colonized (called Luna). The colonies are spread over the moon and the population at Luna are criminals, political refugees or descendants of them. Luna is controlled by wardens from earth, but in practice they have no real power on Luna due to the non-organized structure of Luna society. The population of Luna are slaves to the United Nations and their mission is to grow food at Luna that is sent back to earth. Now a revolution is approaching on Luna since food has become scarce on the moon. “There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch” is a libertarian motto that permeates the book! It is a very good book that addresses libertarian issues and tackles them on the moon. I can really recommend the book. This book is about to become a movie too and I really hope they retain the political messages in the movie!

Now we have taken the train to Huê and here we are going to plan our entry into Laos! Huê was the former capital of Vietnam before the communists took power and it is apparently known for its architecture, so we are thinking to explore this in one of the next days!

Angkor Thom, sjukdom och återseende!

Vi fick ställa in onsdagens utflykt till Angkor Wat och Angkor Thom då Pontus blev dålig med illamående och feber. Pontus sov hela dagen och Ulrika roade sig med att läsa ut “The Martian” av Andy Weir. Den handlar om en astronaut som lämnas kvar på Mars när resten av besättningen evakueras pga en kraftig storm. Besättningen fick indikationer på att Mark (som astronauten heter) blev dödad, men så var inte fallet. Man får följa Marks anteckningar om hur han försöker överleva på Mars och även vad människorna på jorden gör för att hjälpa honom. Boken är väldigt bra och ska vara vetenskapligt korrekt (enligt kritiker!), så vi kan verkligen rekommendera den. Bok nr 2 som Ulrika läste ut var “Alongside night” av J. Neil Schulman. Den handlar om ett USA på ruinen till kollaps under ett mer och mer socialistiskt styre (på god väg mot diktatur) och hur sonen (Elliott) till en nobelpristagare i ekonomi får se sin familj bli arresterad av staten för att hans pappa kritiserat staten och varnat för denna utveckling mot mer socialism i 15 år. Elliotts enda chans att få se sin familj är att gå med i “terroristgruppen” som är en underjordisk löst sammansatt nätverk av agorister/anarkokapitalister som försöker rädda USA från att gå under. Mycket bra bok!

Igår (torsdag) så kände sig Pontus lite bättre så vi åkte till Angkor Thom och besökte de flesta av templen på denna plats. Nedan finner ni en 2-min video som vi spelade in vid Bayon templet med vår gopro-kamera. Vi fick skjuta upp besöket till Angkor Wat till imorgon (lördag) då Pontus inte kände sig helt frisk, men det gjorde absolut inget för igår eftermiddag så kunde vi äntligen få träffa Linda, Helena och Sten-Gunnar! Vi kramades, åt (tack så mycket för maten!!!) och pratade i några timmar innan de fortsatte med sitt hektiska schema :)!Det var underbart att träffa er!

Ikväll lagar fransmännen mat till familjen Maden, oss, samt ett par från argentina (Rosio och Pablo) som också bor hos familjen. Vi är ansvariga för drycken!

We had to cancel Wednesday’s trip to Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, when Pontus woke up with nausea and fever. Pontus slept all day and Ulrika amused herself by reading out “The Martian” by Andy Weir. It is about an astronaut who was left on the surface of Mars when the rest of the crew evacuated due to a severe storm. The crew received indications that Mark (the astronaut’s name) was killed, but that was not the case. The reader follows Mark’s log entries about how he tries to survive on Mars and what people on earth do to help him. The book is very good and should be scientifically correct (according to critics)! We can really recommend it. Book No 2 that Ulrika read out was “Alongside Night” by J. Neil Schulman. It is about an America on the ruin of collapse during an increasingly socialist rule (on the way to dictatorship) and the son (Elliott) to a Nobel Prize winner in economics seeing his family arrested by the state due to his fathers criticism towards the state and warnings about this trend toward more socialism (and destruction) for 15 years. Elliott’s only chance to see his family is to join the”terrorist group” which is an underground loose network of agorists/anarcho-capitalists who are trying to save the USA from going under. Very good book!

Yesterday (Thursday), Pontus felt better so we went to Angkor Thom and visited most of the temples situated there. Below you will find a 2-min video that we recorded at the Bayon Temple with our GoPro camera. We had to postpone the visit to Angkor Wat until tomorrow (Saturday) because Pontus did not feel completely healthy, but it did absolutely nothing for yesterday afternoon we could finally meet Linda, Helena and Sten-Gunnar! We hugged, ate (thanks so much for the food !!!) and talked for a few hours before they continued their hectic schedule :)! It was wonderful to meet you!

Tonight the french couple is preparing dinner for the Maden family, us and a couple from Argentina (Rosio and Pablo) who also lives with the family. We are responsible for the drinks!

Floden i Kampot! Kampot river!

Lördag förmiddag tog vi mopeden till den närbelägna staden Kampot, som ligger ca 2.5 mil nordväst om Kep beach. Kep beach är litet och de flesta turister är franska, men Kampot är större och har mycket turister av olika nationaliteter. De har till och med en liten second hand bokhandel som har en sektion med svenska böcker. Kampot ligger vid Kampotfloden och vi följde floden söderut och såg alla fiskebåtar som var på väg ut för nattens fiske. Det är inte lika mycket trafik här som i Phnom Penh så det går bra att köra moped. Vi hittade en Whisky (blended, Thailand) för 15 kr i Kampot i en välsorterad matbutik i Kampot som faktiskt smakar gott!

Ulrika har läst ut boken Fermats gåta av Simon Singh och den är skriven som en kärleksroman om matematik. Boken handlar om Fermats sista sats. Pierre de Fermat påstod sig på 1600-talet ha ett bevis för att det inte finns heltalslösningar för motsvarigheten till pytagoras sats i högre dimensioner än 2, men beviset har aldrig hittats och lösningen har gäckat matematiker i 300 år. Till slut lyckas Andrew Wiles, som läste om problemet som 10 åring, komma fram till ett hållbart bevis när han i 40-års åldern ägnat en stor del av sitt liv för att knäcka gåtan och samtidigt under sitt arbete lyckats knyta ihop och koppla samman tidigare avlägsna fält inom matematiken. Boken kan verkligen rekommenderas!

Saturday morning we took the scooter to the nearby town of Kampot, which is about 25 kilometres northwest of Kep Beach. Kep beach is small and most of the tourists are French, but Kampot is bigger and has a lot of tourists of different nationalities. They even have a little second hand bookstore that has a section with Swedish books. Kampot is located at Kampot river and we followed the river south and saw all the fishing boats heading out for the night’s fishing. It is not as much traffic here as in Phnom Penh so it’s not hard to drive. We found a whiskey (blended, Thailand) for SEK 15 in Kampot in a well-sorted grocery store in Kampot that actually tastes good!

Ulrika has finished the book Fermat’s last theorem by Simon Singh and it is written as a love story about mathematics. Pierre de Fermat claimed in the 1600s to have a mathematical proof that there is no integer solutions for the equivalent of the Pythagorean theorem in higher dimensions than two, but the proof has never been found and the solution has eluded mathematicians for 300 years. Eventually Andrew Wiles, who read about the problem as a 10 years old, came up with a viable proof as he in his forties after devoting much of his life to crack the mystery and at the same time he managed to tie together and interconnect previously unconnected fields of mathematics. The book can be highly recommended!

Crab market, första doppet och nyårsafton

Onsdag startade med att försöka hitta wifi och lägga ut alla inlägg vi skrivit och när det var gjort så tog vi en promenad för att se oss omkring i Kep och Kep Beach. Kep var tidigare en lyxig semesterort för franska societeten under kolonialmaktstiden och en gång i tiden stod det stora gårdar på dessa tomter, men alla hus förstördes och plundrades av den inhemska befolkningen efter att röda khmererna störtats. På kvällen hade vår promenad lett oss till Keps krabbmarknad och där ligger en hel del små restauranger som sticker ut mot vattnet. Där åt vi en supergod krabba med Kampot pepparsås och såg på när fiskarna hämtade in sin fångst av krabbor.

Tomterna ekade tomma i gamla Kep och många stora byggnader var plundrade och skadade av brand. The ground plots echoed empty in old Kep and many large buildings were looted and damaged by fire.

Torsdag morgon gick vi upp väldigt tidigt (kl 7!) och startade dagen med en löptur till Kep beach för att ta vårt första dopp för i år och äta frukost på stranden. Vi tog en lunch i centrum och blickade ut över alla människor som samlades där för att fira nyår. Det var dukat till fest och vi begav oss hemåt efter lunch genom att ta en rask promenad tillbaka.

Vi vill väldigt gärna tipsa om ett superbra avsnitt av Kristian och Hanna på frihetsfaxen (nr 33). Det förgyllde vår dag och var anledning till att vi tog en promenad hem för att få tid att lyssna på det. Det handlar om hur libertarianer (som är en väldigt bred grupp av människor) hur vi förhåller oss till andra människor och hur målet är att komma fram till det som är sant genom att argumentera med andra människor, samt skillnaden mellan libertarianer och socialister. Det vore väldigt kul om våra familjer (och andra som är intresserade hur vi tänker) ville lyssna på detta avsnitt! Tack Kristian och Hanna för ett oerhört bra avsnitt av frihetsfaxen!

Ulrika har även läst ut “The first fifteen lifes of Harry August” av Claire North och den boken är oerhört bra, Pontus har snart läst halva den boken. Kommer inte ihåg om det var Magnus eller Fredrik som tipsade om den när vi hade filmkväll hos Gunnar, men tack så mycket för tipset!

På kvällen firade vi nyårsafton på vår resort innan vi gick och lade oss. Ulrika vaknade dock av en smäll under natten och morgonen efter fick vi höra av Ryan (vår värd) att det skett en mopedolycka precis utanför vår resort där föraren kört av vägen och landat i risfältet. Han hade gått för att hjälpa till men det hade inte sett ut som om det hade gått så bra för personen som körde mopeden. Idag (fredag) har vi hyrt en moped som vi ska använda för att ta oss runt här på kusten (vi har hjälm och vi ska köra försiktigt!).

Wednesday started with trying to find wifi and update our blog with all the posts we’ve written. Afterwards, we took a walk to look around Kep and Kep Beach.Kep was formerly a luxurious holiday resort for french high society during the colonial period and large houses were standing on these ground plots, but all the houses were destroyed and looted by the indigenous population after the Khmer Rouge were overthrown. In the evening, our walk led us to the crab market in Kep beach and we found a lot of small restaurants standing next to the water. We ate a delicious crab dinner with Kampot pepper sauce and watched the fishermen while they were bringing in their catch of crabs.

Första badet för året! First swim of the year!

Thursday morning we got up very early (7 am!) and started the day with a run to Kep beach to take our first swim of the year and have breakfast on the beach. We ate lunch in the center of Kep beach and watched all the people who gathered in Kep beach for the celebration of the Chinese new year. They were preparing for a big party as we went home after lunch by taking a brisk walk back.

We want to share a really good episode of the swedish podcast “frihetsfaxen” (no. 33) with Kristian and Hanna. It brightened our day and was the major reason we took a walk home to get time to listen to the whole episode. It’s about how libertarians (who is a very broad group of people) relate to other people and how the goal is to arrive at what is true by arguing with other people, and the difference between libertarians and socialists. It would be very nice if our families (and others who are interested in how we think) wanted to listen to this episode! Thanks Kristian and Hanna for an extremely good podcast episode!

Ulrika has finished reading “The first fifteen lifes of Harry August” by Claire North and the book is extremely good, and Pontus is not far behind to finish the book (he has read half of the book). We can not remember if it was Magnus or Fredrik who told us about this book when we had movie night with Gunnar, but thank you so much for the tip!

In the evening we celebrated New Year’s Eve at our resort before we went to bed. However, Ulrika woke up by a bang during the night, and the morning after we were told by Ryan (our host) that there had been a scooter accident just outside our resort. He had gone to help but it had not looked as if it had gone so well for the person who was driving the scooter, who had driven off the road into the field. Yesterday (Friday) we rented a scooter which we use to take us around here on the coast (we have helmets and we’ll drive carefully!).
