Det finns ett litet historiskt museum här i Acapulco som till största handlar om Nya Spaniens handel med Östasien över stilla havet. Museét huserar i Fort San Diego, som byggdes av det spanska imperiet 1617. Fort San Diego byggdes för att skydda Acapulcos hamn mot piratattacker, speciellt för att skydda lasten som kom från väst. Efter att Spanjorerna tagit över delar av Sydamerika så fortsatte de över stilla havet och Ferdinand Magellan hamnade år 1521 på Filippinerna. Namnet Filipperna är en hyllning till kung Felipe II, som var kung i Spanien när den asiatiska ögruppen upptäcktes av spanjorerna, som snabbt tog över kommandot från kineserna och den inhemska befolkningen. När en effektiv rutt för hemresan över Stilla havet hittades 1565 upprättades det en handelsväg med Filippinerna och Mexiko, där Acapulco blev basen för Manilagaleonen, även kallad Kinaskeppen, som trafikerade stilla havet.
Kinas närvaro på Filippinerna hade funnits länge, men deras handel i området begränsades kraftigt i och med Spaniens övertagande. Kineserna fick endast bedriva handel på en liten yta i Manila (Pariàn) och de kineser som konverterade till kristendomen fick uppskov i 10 år på skatten som tvingades på de som bedrev handel i Manila. Handeln blomstrade för Spanjorernas del och mycket kinesiska varor, såsom porslin, tyger, kryddor, växter etc. hamnade varje år på marknaden i Acapulco. Mycket av kulturen mellan öst och väst blandades här, allt från mat, språk och religion, och de tidiga kristna symbolerna som tillverkades i Filippinerna ska tydligen ha haft den liggande buddha som modell. Det tog cirka 100 dagar att segla från Acapulco till Filippinerna och denna resa gjordes på försommaren så att båtarna anlände under juni/juli för att undvika de tropiska stormarna i Asien. Vindarna gjorde att hemresan tog 180 dagar och skeppen anlände till Acapulco i Januari. Tydligen ska rutten för hemresan varit väldigt nära ögruppen Hawaii, men inga dokument från denna tid tyder på att spanjorerna haft någon kontakt med invånarna på Hawaii. I samband med att båtarna kom i hamn anordnades det även en årlig mässa där de åtråvärda kinesiska varorna såldes.
Det spanska kungahuset och politiska eliten i Spanien ville förstås ha sin del av kakan av den blomstrande handeln och införde därför fler och fler skatter och regleringar, som tillslut ströp marknaden och gjorde att det endast var ett fåtal som kunde bedriva handeln över Stilla havet. 200 år efter att handelsrutten upprättats så hade denna statliga kontroll gjort att antalet båtar som färdades mellan Manila och Acapulco gått från flera hundra till att endast en båt nu gjorde denna resa. Handelsvägen mellan Acapulco och Filippinerna kunde inte upprätthållas, men även idag så ska det vara en årlig marknad här i Acapulco i januari som en gång startades av att skeppen från väst lade till i den skyddande viken i Acapulco.
There is a small historical museum here in Acapulco that deals mostly with New Spain’s trade with East Asia across the Pacific. The museum is housed in the Fort San Diego, which was built by the Spanish Empire in 1617. Fort San Diego was built to protect the port of Acapulco against pirate attacks, especially to protect the load that came from the West. After the Spaniards took over parts of South America, they continued across the Pacific, and Ferdinand Magellan ended up in the Philippines in 1521. The name of the Philippines is a tribute to King Felipe II, who was king of Spain when this Asian archipelago was discovered by the Spaniards, who quickly took over the command from the Chinese and the indigenous population that lived on the islands. When an effective route for the return trip across the Pacific was established in 1565, a trade route between the Philippines and Mexico was formed, where Acapulco became the basis for the Manila galleon, also called the China Ships, which operated the route over the the Pacific.
China’s presence in the Philippines had long existed, but their trade in the area was severely restricted after the Spanish takeover. The Chinese were only allowed to trade in a small area in Manila (the Pariàn), and only the Chinese who converted to Christianity were allowed a 10 year suspension on the tax that was forced on those who traded in Manila. The trade flourished for the Spaniards and Chinese goods, such as porcelain, fabrics, spices, plants, etc. ended up each year on the market in Acapulco. Much of the culture of East and West mixed here, everything from food, language and religion, and the early Christian symbols that were manufactured in the Philippines apparently had the reclining Buddha as a model. It took approximately 100 days to sail from Acapulco to the Philippines and this trip was made in early summer so that the boats arrived in June-July to avoid tropical storms in Asia. The winds made the return journey longer and it took 180 days before the ships arrived in Acapulco in January. Apparently, this sail route back to Acapulco was very close to the archipelago of Hawaii, but no documents from this period suggest that the Spaniards had any contact with the inhabitants of Hawaii. An annual fair was organized when the boats finally arrived in the port of Acapulco where the coveted Chinese goods were sold.
The Spanish royal family and the political elite wanted to have their share of the pie of the booming trade of course and they imposed more and more taxes and regulations, which eventually strangled the market and only a few could afford to conduct the trade across the Pacific. 200 years after the trade route had been established, the state control had brought down the number of boats that sailed between Manila and Acapulco from several hundred to only one boat that now made this trip. Because of the regulations, the trade route between Acapulco and the Philippines could not be maintained, but even today there is an annual market here in Acapulco in January that once started by the ships from the West that sailed in to the protective cove of Acapulco.
