Igår utforskade vi vi delar av distrikt 1 innan vi gick till krigsminnesmuseet till minne av vietnamkriget (det amerikanska kriget som det kallas här!). Vi fick ta del av nästan 20 år av våld, död, terror och förtvivlan som sträcker sig ända till nutid här i Vietnam. Konflikten fick sin början 1955 strax efter att Frankrike besegrades militärt och deras imperialistiska erövringskrig  i indokina krossades med resultat i att Vietnam delades i kommunistiska Nordvietnam stödda av Sovjetunionen och Kina, samt Sydvietnam stödda av USA. Nordvietnam ledd av kommunistledaren Ho Chi Minh ville befria hela Vietnam från imperialisterna. Det var planerat för demokratiska val i Vietnam 1956 med stöd av det internationella samfundet men Sydvietnams USA-stödda ledare Ngo Dinh Diem vägrade demokratiska val då opinionen var för kommunistledaren Ho Chi Minh (demokrati tillåts endast då det passar!).

I Nordvietnam beslagtogs tillgångar från köpmän och privata företag och de startade även en beväpnad motståndsrörelse (befrielserörelse, kallad FNL) i Sydvietnam (Men detta stod det ingenting om på museet). Efter flera års truppuppbyggnad och den utlösande incidenten i Tonkinbukten 1965 så började USA med massiva bombningar av Nordvietnam.

Så två onda ting (Kommunism och agression utifrån) och däremellan en befolkning i kläm som fått utstå oerhört mycket. Det är skamligt att inte ledarna för USA blivit åtalade för det oerhörda lidande de orsakat den vietnamesiska befolkningen. Dioxinet (“agent orange”) som de sprutade ut i mängder finns forfarande kvar här i landet och ännu idag föds det barn med nedsatta kognitiva funktioner och yttre missbildningar för att deras föräldrar blivit utsatta för agent orange. Krigsveteranerna i USA har fått kompensation från Monsanto och Dow Chemical, men inga vietnameser! Genom gerillakrig med små medel och befolkningens stöd segrade slutligen Nordvietnam 1975.

Museet var väldigt bra och hemskt men gav också en väldigt ensidig bild av kriget. De påpekar mycket bra hur oerhört orättfärdigt USAs attack på Vietnam var och visar tydligt vilket oerhört lidande folket fått utstå. De visar vad USA gjort mot landet och folket men väldigt lite om hur Nordvietnameserna och Sydvietnams nationella befrielsefront (gerillarörelsen) var organiserad och hur de krigade.

Yesterday we explored District 1 before we went to the War Remnants Museum commemorating the Vietnam War (the American war as it is called here). We got to experience nearly 20 years of violence, death, terror and despair that extends to the present day here in Vietnam. The conflict was started in 1955 shortly after France was defeated militarily and their imperialist wars of conquest in Indochina was crushed with the result that Vietnam was divided into communist North Vietnam, supported by the Soviet Union and China, and South Vietnam, supported by the United States. North Vietnam led by communist leader Ho Chi Minh wanted to liberate all of Vietnam from the imperialists. It was planned for democratic elections in Vietnam in 1956 with the support of the international community, but South Vietnam’s US-backed leader Ngo Dinh Diem refused democratic elections when public opinion was for communist leader Ho Chi Minh (democracy is allowed only when it fits!).

North Vietnam seized assets from merchants and private companies and they also started an armed resistance movement (Liberation Movement) in South Vietnam (But this was not mentioned in the museum). After several years of troop build-up and the triggering incident in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1965, the USA began with a massive bombardment of North Vietnam.

So two evils (Communism and foreign aggression) and in between a population who suffered immensely. It is shameful that the leaders of the United States has not been indicted for the tremendous suffering they caused the Vietnamese population. The USA sprayed large parts of the country with Dioxin (Agent Orange) and even today children are born with with impaired cognitive functions and external malformations because their parents have been exposed to Agent Orange. War veterans in the United States have received compensation from Monsanto and Dow Chemical but no Vietnamese people! By guerrilla warfare with small means and the support of the people, North Vietnam won in 1975.

The museum was very good and terrible but also gave a very one-sided picture of the war. They point out very well how terribly unjust the US attack on Vietnam was and clearly shows the immense suffering people endured. They show what the US did to the country and people but very little about how the North Vietnamese and South Vietnam National Liberation Front (guerrilla) was organized and how they fought.
