Ulrika gästar Radio Frihetligt

Sorry friends, this will mostly be in Swedish! (Ulrika is guest in a Swedish libertarian radio show)

We also want to thank our friends the King family for the lovely Christmas gifts. Our bitcoin Pashmina scarfs fit our lifestyle and they have really been helpful during the cold evenings here in Spain! You can find the bitcoin scarfs in their online store!

A delayed Christmas present – the gift of life

We can finally tell you that our life will hopefully change to become even better in 2018. We have been planning this for some time and it is the biggest reason why our 2017 were all about taking steps to become as free as we can be in an unfree world.

2018 couldn’t start better for us, it is the year that we now can say that we are no longer two persons that are traveling the world, but three! We are happy to announce that we are now carrying precious cargo in the form of a new life with us.

The secret we’ve carried for the last months can finally be revealed. We are brewing a new life, ingredients are our DNA and our mission is to grow our next generation to be free in an unfree world.

Ulrika woke up on Boxing day morning and knew that she was pregnant, but didn’t say anything to Pontus. All the pharmacies in Paphos were closed that day, so she sneaked out in the morning the day after to purchase a pregnancy test. Two lines appeared straight away and she put the positive test in a box and wrapped it to give Pontus as a delayed Christmas gift. Pontus reaction when he opened the gift was priceless, his eyes were sparkling and he was a bit shocked. Ulrika had really taken him by surprise, but it was a nice surprise!

So 12 weeks have passed  and “det lilla livet” or “the little life “, our nickname of the human inside of Ulrika, was 5.1 centimeters from crown to rump. She(?) was moving and kicking around in the uterus, and we got a glimpse of her(?) sucking the thumb and waving her(?) arms. The lack of detectable male genitalia suggests that we are expecting a daughter, but it is to early to be 100% sure. We’re hoping to welcome “det lilla livet” in the end of the northern hemisphere’s summer of 2018.

2017 – To Live Free in an Unfree World

We have done a summary of our 2017. Our third year living as nomads! Our motto is to live free in an unfree world and this year consisted of taking several steps towards that motto.
One of the things we did was to reduce our packing down to 7 kg per person, which means that our belongings now fits in two carry-on backpacks so we don’t have to check in any luggage while commuting with 99% of the worlds airlines (the last 1% has even more restrictive carry-on rules). It was easy for us to downsize, after three years of travel we know what things we use and what kind of clothes we need.

2017 brought us to Asia and Europe exploring 15 countries, seven of which we visited for the first time. We attended Bitcoin meet ups in several countries and attended three Libertarian Conferences this year, so it was a good year of liberty for us.

More about our 2017 will be posted with the pictures below.

The first thing we did in 2017 was to visit Malta and explore the tiny island in the Mediterranean Sea.

We visited our friends at bubb.la and frihetlig.se while on Malta and they were the main reason we came to the island.

Bangkok was our next stop and we attended their weekly Bitcoin meet up. We were impressed with the number of people showing up to the Bangkok Satoshi Square meet up. The Swedes were of course the first ones there 🙂

We ended up doing a 4 day/4 night live-aboard dive trip around the Similan and Surin Islands, with stops at Richelieu rock, Koh Bon and Ko Tachai.

13 dives later and two happy souls came back to Khao Lak.

Our friends Karin and Patrik decided to come visit us in Thailand before we left for Bali.

Here we spent our days in our lovely accommodation just outside of Ubud in Bali.

When we think of Ubud we also think about the great Bitcoin community that can be found here.

We also got new friends here Daniel and Rebecca, they are both inspiring persons. Daniel is one of the founders of Mullvad, a VPN-service run by Ancaps, and Rebecca, who is starting up a location-independent, transparent  and open-source research center.

It was also the year Ulrika’s family came to visit us in Indonesia. We spent our days together on Gili Air, Lombok and Bali.

We did some diving around the Gili Islands and Mats dived with us at Turtle Heaven.

We did a short stop in Singapore visiting our friend Stefan and a home/cafe for abandoned cats before travelling to Turkey.

We did a transit in Iran and Ulrika was forced to have a towel on her head to be able to change aircrafts. It was an interesting experience that we choose to do to get as cheap tickets as possible to get closer to Europe.

We tried to see as much as possible in Istanbul and one of our goals was to see Hagia Sofia.

King’s Landing (Dubrovnik) and Croatia was our next stop and here we could visit our friend Linda who was stationed here at the time.

We spent a few days in Ljublana, Slovenia, a beautiful city in Europe. Spending the summer in Europe was a good choice by us.

We continued north and visited our friends Tobias and Sussi in Graz. They showed us the city and the lovely Austrian white wines.

We continued to our friends Sandra and Markus in Riezlern and they really tested our limits with the famous Hindelanger Klettersteig. Ulrikas big toe nail is still blue almost six months after this adventure.

We had an adventurous time  together on mountain bikes exploring the surroundings of the Alp village.

We ended our time with Sandra and Markus with a stunning view from Hoher Ifen.

We accidentally stepped in to a nudity beach/park in the middle of Munich fully-dressed.

We continued visiting friends in Europe and our next stop was to visit Michi in Bamberg for a few days.

Michi had of course set up so his local bouldering place accepted bitcoin.

We continued to Berlin and learned about the cold war.

Next we were back on Malta for the 2017 version of Corax Conference, we can really recommend buying a remote ticket if you want to listen to the talks given by Professor Hans-Herman Hoppe, Jeff Deist, Adam Kokesh, Julia Borowski,  Matthew Reece and many more!

Love Pontus sneaky picture of HHH and Sofias revealing smile!

We did take time to do two dives around Gozo, the smaller island north of Malta main island. We got the opportunity to see the Azure window that fell into the sea in beginning of 2017.

Then it was time to travel to our favorite place – Paralelni Polis in Prague. It is one of the major hubs for cryptoanarchy that we know of. This place only accepts bitcoin and litecoin as mediums of exchange and rejects using Fiat-currencies, just like us.

The Czech Republic had gotten Bitcoin fever, so we appeared on Czech public tv as background people.

Our main reason to be here was to take care of our favorite nomadic and unschooled boys Henry and Winston while we were waiting for their little brother Edward to join us.

Finally, the long awaited member of the King family was here. We got the amazing experience of being part of the home-birth of Edward Satoshi King. We will treasure the memory forever.

We said good bye to the King family and met up vid Nanok, another Bitcoin person from Sweden,  in Budapest.

We also explored Budapest and got to experience thermal baths and a pinball museum.

We came back to Prague for Hacker’s Congress 2017, one of our favorite conferences to attend.  We also got the chance to hold a Bitcoin meetup the same week at Paralelni Polis talking about life nomadic with bitcoin and our reasons to opt-out from the current economic system.

We visited Sweden for family reasons and we took the opportunity to attend the ESFL regional conference in Stockholm. Our main reason to attend was to get the chance to meet one of the speakers, Assistant Professor Per Bylund.

We ended 2017 going to Cyprus and meeting up with Robert, another freedom-minded, expat Swede.

Christmas and New year’s eve will be spent here on Cyprus! The circle of 2017 is  closing, we started the year on one Mediterranean island, Malta, and we end 2017 on a second Mediterranean island.

Our first year as nomads was spent in Asia, our second year in Central America and our third year mostly in Europe!

We look forward to what 2018  and our fourth year as nomads will bring us! Happy new year everyone!

I Honduras betalar du för närvarande 3 US Dollar och Nicaragua vill ha 12.5 US Dollar innan de släpper in dig i landet.

Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua have a common Visa system since 2006, called CA-4. That means you will have access to the other three countries as soon as you cross the border into any of them. However, this applies only if you are crossing the borders by land, whereas other rules apply if you choose to fly between these countries. The CA-4 Visa is valid for 90 days total and for some this may be way too short a time for exploring all four countries.

There are a few ways to get around the system if you want to stay longer:

  1. You can make a so-called “Visa-run” to either Mexico, Belize or Costa Rica. Take a three day trip to one of the surrounding countries, as Guatemala for example, wants you to have been out of the country for 72 hours to receive a new CA-4 Visa. However, there are well-described ways around this 72-hour rule if you just use your google skills. Be aware that Costa Rica can be very strict on requiring you to show a proof of onward travel and they also have the highest departure tax out of these three countries at 29 US Dollars.
  2. You can also apply for an extension of your CA-4 Visa in any of the countries. The price is different depending on which country you decide to do it in. In El Salvador, the CA-4 extension costs 25 US Dollars and I have seen prices of 40 US dollars in Nicaragua. However, remember to do it in good time, because this process can take some time.
  3. If it is just a few days that distinguishes between your onward travel date and the expire date of your CA-4 Visa, it may be worthwhile to simply overstay these days and then pay the penalty fee when traveling out of the CA-4 area. In Guatemala, this fee is 1.30 US Dollars per day and in Nicaragua it is US $ 2 per day.

So how easy is it actually to cross the borders within the CA-4 area? You might think that the border controls should be much faster now that the Visa is valid for all four countries, but that does not seem to be the case. On the other hand we don’t know how it was here before this system.

Expect delays, some longer than others depending on which border cross you are at and how many people that are queuing with you. In Honduras, you will also go through the process of giving them your  fingerprints and a photo of your face before being allowed into the country. Both Honduras and Nicaragua have entry taxes/fees that must be paid even if you already have a Visa. Currently, you pay 3 US Dollars in Honduras and Nicaragua wants 12.5 US dollars before they let you in.

Finally, some things you should look out for.

  1. At the border to Guatemala, you may find that the immigration office says that you have to pay a fee, and that is a scam. Guatemala has no entry or exit fees, so ask for a receipt and they tend to quickly forget this fee.
  2. People have reported that they only got a 30 day Visa when Honduras was the first CA-4 country they came to, so pay attention to this. Say that you want 90 days if you are planning to land in Honduras.
  3. El Salvador and Nicaragua do not stamp your passport, but gives you an exit receipt when you cross the border. Make sure to remember your date of entry, you will not have a date stamp in your passport that will remember it for you, and do not lose your exit receipt. Otherwise you will have to start the process of getting a new exit receipt before you can leave El Salvador or Nicaragua.

So enjoy your travels in Central America!

Vattenrevolutionen i Guatemala / The water revolution in Guatemala

(Please scroll down to the orange text for the English version)

Clean water most people would agree, is the difference between life and death, but access to clean water is severely limited in many places in the world. We bring water filters from Life Straw with us during our journey and this water filtering tube has quenched our thirst in caves on Borneo, a small island in Laos and at times after the stores have closed in Mexico. The problem with the Life Straw is that they are quite expensive (~ 20 EUR) and they do not last long if you use them every day. The ones we use can only filter 1000 liters of water before you need to replace them.
We have bought so many plastic bottles filled with water and we have tried to re-use them in places where we can refill the bottles, but I do not dare to count how much plastic we have consumed during our 15 month of traveling just to avoid getting sick from drinking water.

Then we arrived to Guatemala, an incredibly beautiful country where almost 60% of the population is classified as poor by the World Bank. Here we find a completely ingenious construction in our hostel kitchen that provides clean water to many people around the world for about 20 EUR/year. It is a large plastic bucket with a ceramic pot in it that filters one to two liters of water per hour and provides families and school classes with pure water in Guatemala. Many restaurants and shops in Antigua place them at their entrances and give passersby the opportunity to quench their thirst and fill up their water bottles for free. The ceramic pot consists of three layers: clay, sawdust and colloidal silver, which cleans the water and removes bad smells and tastes. The filter needs only to be washed with clean water every three months and laboratory tests show that it is safe to use for at least two years before you may need to replace the ceramic pot. Our water bottle consumption went down to close to zero during our time in Guatemala and we can confirm that the purified tap water tasted really good.

The person behind this innovation is the Guatemalan inventor Fernando Mazariegos, who developed this inexpensive alternative for water purification technology to the Guatemalan homes in the early 1980s. During the last 30 years that the technology has been around, Ecofiltro, the company behind this low cost water filter, has managed to spread to 53 other countries. It was this information that surprises us the most. We have been in some of the countries where production and sales are ongoing, such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Cambodia, and we have not encountered this technology before coming to Guatemala. Are there any of our readers who have seen this smart and inexpensive invention before? It would be very nice to know.

Fun news and a conversation with a man!

(Please scroll down to the orange text for the English version)

The fun news is that I, Ulrika, will start to publish stories on the website “Ett annat liv“, which is a very nice trevel site for us who opt the regular life style and want to share our thoughts and travel tips! The text below is my first contribution to the website!

There are multiple reasons behind our life choice, where ideological reasons is one of the strongest driving forces for us to get to know the world, but there is also another reason to find alternative ways of living for me and I would like to share it with you.

More than ten years ago, I worked at a home service for elderly during the summers. Through this work I met many nice old people. However, one summer I heard about a really unpleasant man who had just become a customer of this municipal home care company. The man’s visits from the home care were on my schedule and I would get acquainted with him on my first day, which I didn’t look forward to.

It was a really angry and rude man I met when I stepped in to his spartan-furnished apartment and I knew at once that it would not be an easy task to try to help him in his plight. Our first meeting was short and I did what I could. I left the apartment after hearing a number of taunts about everything from the home care staff to medical doctors. However, I had noticed a few strange, very decorative masks hanging on the wall in the otherwise bare apartment, On my next visit to the angry man I asked him where these masks was coming from and how he got them in his possession. I do not know why he chose to open up to me, but my question got him to slowly open up and over the coming weeks we would talk a lot about how his life had been, but especially about his dreams.

It was an angry and frustrated man who told me how his life had taken shape because of the choices he made in his life. He had a very nice job, where he spent a lot of time working at the expense of spending time with his family, especially his children, and exploring the world. His work had made it possible for him to travel around the world, but he had not seen much more than what he could see from any of the hotel rooms he visited. He had postponed all his dreams to after his retirement. After a failed marriage and poor contact with his children his goal for the pension was to finally travel and see the world. It was now at the age of 65 that he would get the reward of all these hard years. His home was sold, he had an extensive travel fund and the flight tickets was booked for a trip around the world. A few weeks before the planned departure, signals from his body made him seek medical care. The diagnosis was a late stage terminal cancer.

Instead of sitting on a plane to begin his journey of his dream, he was now sitting with the Swedish palliative care. Instead of walking up on Kilimanjaro, he now had to go up some stairs in an apartment complex and sit in an apartment with some things bought in panic to solely live for a few more months. It was a very angry and sad man who wistfully told me of his dreams and what he should have done with his life instead. The only thing I could do was sit on his kitchen chair, listen to him and learn from his story.

My summer job at the home service ended and I brought the conversations with the man back with me to my studies in Linköping, but now I had new eyes on life. Three weeks later I saw his obituary in the local newspaper and I knew then that I didn’t want to live my life like his.

Tipsa oss om ditt Latinamerika! / Tell us about your Latin America!

(Please scroll down to the orange text for the English version)

We are thinking about where to go after Acapulco, and there are many choices, so we felt that we wanted to see if any of you would like to give some tips on different places in Central and South America that is something of the extraordinary. We love nature, diving, climbing, architecture, history, libertarian people and bitcoin communities. So if you know of a special place that you love, you are most welcome to write a comment or send an email to us! We will need to go back to Sweden in August so we would like to plan a little further ahead than we usually do, because Central and South America is huge.
We are now thinking of Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Colombia or Peru, but do tell us about other countries if you have a cool place place there! We also would like recommendations of places to visit in the countries we’re currently thinking of!
Our thoughts right now is to either take the country road south from Mexico or fly further south, from where we can proceed with our exploration of Latin America from that point.

So where are your gems here in Latin America?

Förgiftad av bönor! / Poisoned by beans!

(Please scroll down to the orange text for the English version)

Most of our friends know that Ulrika doesn’t like to cook and she’s just waiting for the day when she can just swallow a pill and get all the nutritions she needs. It’s Pontus who is the creative in our kitchen, but now Pontus has an intense period right now, so last week Ulrika had promised to take care of the cooking, and given that you’re reading this you realize that something must have happened.
One of the first dishes Ulrika prepared was a vegan-inspired bean burger made of black beans. After soaking the beans for 16 hours, Ulrika prepared the lunch and after a sterling job by Ulrika we sat down and ate a very good lunch. An hour later, symptoms of bloating, fatigue, dizziness, and pressure-like headaches appeared, which then escalated into water stools, nausea and headache. The bitter, metallic taste in the throat did not go away even though we drank lots of water. After a google search, Ulrika found an answer to this emergency situation and the answer also became that day’s lesson; Beans contains toxins! The toxin is lectins, which bind to glycoproteins in the cell membrane. In the intestinal tract the lectins affects the intestinal epithelium which starts to leak, therefore, water comes out from places where it normally does not. Beans need to be cooked, boiled or changing the water several times during soaking, and Ulrika did not do either.
In retrospect, we can laugh about it and Pontus can now say that his fiancee has poisoned him 🙂

Svenska resebloggar och världskartan! Swedish travel blogs and the world map!

(Please scroll down to the orange text for the English version)

We have found a super nice web site that gathers Swedish travel blogs and we have signed up our blog there now! We can advise people with wanderlust (yes, we think of you Linda;)) to check the web site out (yes, they even have it in English!), and we will add a link to the web site to the right on our blog. Ulrika has found several interesting blogs today and she was also inspired to mark the places we have visited during our trip on a map so you can find the result below. You can also see how few places we have visited in the world despite the fact that we have been out traveling for over a year now!

Anarchapulco 2016

(Please scroll down to the orange text for the English version)

Here are our reflections from our first anarco-capitalistic conference and we will also throw in some pictures from those days too! The level of the lectures was above what we expected and it was great to have so many of our favorite people gathered in the same place. The lectures covered everything from crypto-anarchy to peaceful parenting, yoga and mushrooms, and there was two debates on the schedule. One between Lark Rose and Mark Skousen on anarchy vs. minarchy, and one between Walter Block and Mark Skousen that was supposed to involve Hayekian triangles. Unfortunately, none of the debates are worth mentioning further because they did not hold a decent level, but there were several other real highlights during the conference. You are welcome to listen to episode 84 of the freedom fax machine podcast (in Swedish) where we talk about our favorite lectures.
Our three favorites were Larken Rose, Amanda Rachwitz and Marc Victor, and you can pay $1 in bitcoin per lecture to see them here (Only Larken Rose’s lecture is public now). We were a little disappointed that Walter Block didn’t keep a higher level on his lecture and he started his lecture talking about the ABC of anarchism and assumed that no one in the audience were familiar with Austrian economics, so it was a bit boring. However, he did mention one thing that made us think and it was that anarchists who is also socialists are not anarchists but archists, because AN-archism means no rulers and archists, such as left-“anarchists” want to have their ideology rule over others and no thoughts are given to individuals who think differently and doesn’t want to live by their rules. However, there are anarcho-communists who also have the non-aggression principle as a base, ie not using force or coercion to impose an ideology on someone else, so in that case, it is obvious for us that they can call themselves anarchists! The general message that permeated the conference was a call to work together for a better world and help more people see how authorities, violence and force never will lead to a more peaceful and richer world for all!

The first day of the conference and Jeff Berwick stood on stage and welcomed everybody despite being sick. He had catched Dengue fever and was quite ill during the conference!
