Khao Lak with friends – celebrating life

Our silence here on our blog depends a lot on that we wanted to hang out with our friends, who had made their way to Khao Lak, and to celebrate life. Many of our days were spent either with our friends or just sitting by our computers and do the research to plan our future together and in time we hope to be able to tell you more.
The time with Karin and Patrick was precious – we spent eight days together and we wanted to get as much out of our time together as possible before we went our separate ways. Thank you friends for these lovely days with both high to low discussions and just enjoying the present. Below are some pictures that will illustrate these days.

Khao Lak

We met a strong entrepreneur and woman in Khao Lak and we had the pleasure to speak with her and eat her amazing thai food.

Just ordinary days for us while we’re planning to make big changes for us, so eating and researching at the same time.

We found cover from the sun under a big pine tree during the days we spent at the beach with Karin and Patrik.

Hanging out with Karin meant that we saw a lot of odd creatures, so Ulrika learnt that she should always bring her camera when walking around with Karin 🙂

Be advised, really energetic coffee, high in sugar – Pontus tried one and he ended up having a lot of ideas spinning in his head and went out swimming in the ocean just to get rid of some energy.

One of the evenings eating out at the hotel restaurant where our friends were staying while the sun was about to disappear beneath the horizon.

Lovely evenings talking about life and everything else with our friends Karin and Patrik that joined us here in Khao Lak.

That’s what friends are for! Thank you Ullis H for giving back Pontus favorite T-shirt, the one he left at your apartment after the New year’s eve celebration, and many thanks to Karin and Patrik for bringing the T-shirt with you to Khao Lak.

A blurry night out listening to live music and dancing before leaving Khao Lak.

Thank you my friend for joining us here on a beach in Khao Lak. I’m so glad that we could spend quality time after a turbulent year, hanging out and just be together enjoying life!

Exploring Khao Lak with our new camera

We are currently hanging around in the Khao Lak area and we have just come back from a 4-day tour out on the Andaman Sea, where we did 13 dives at the Surin Islands, Richelieu Rock, Koh Tachai, and the Similian Islands. It has been an absolutely fantastic diving experience for us and Ulrika is now going through and editing the nearly 200 video-shoots taken during the dives. These films will end up here and on our Youtube-channel eventually. In the meantime,  we will show you some pictures from our first days here in Khao Lak.
We went out for a long walk in the heat so Ulrika would have the opportunity to take pictures with our new camera, a Sony RX-100. You can find these photos in the slideshow below. Khao Lak was hit hard by the 2004 tsunami, so those who have been here before the catastrophe will perhaps not recognize the place.  A lot of big resorts has popped up since then in the Khao Lak area, but we found nice places to take photos.  Khao Lak is a very green place,  where the Lam Ru National Park rise up just behind Khao Lak and squeezes the villages in the area between the djungle and the Andaman sea.

Our pictures from Khao Lak:

The sun isn’t always shining in Khao Lak. We’ve had thunder and lightning almost every night. This amount of rain is very uncommon during the dry season. Fortunate for us, the clouds usually comes around during the evening and we like rain so it is not bad according to us.

We’re eating both local stuff, like the lovely noodle soup,…

Thai-version of Sushi, with their own kind of rice,…

and we did go to the only McDonalds in town and had a Mcflurry and a Sundae.

Our home during our stay here.

Pontus training in our 25 meter-pool.

And they are our reason not to sit with our computers all day. Our friends Karin and Patrik decided to join us here in Khao Lak, so we’re spending our time with them – eating, drinking, talking, laughing, sunbathing and swimming in the Andaman sea 🙂

Satoshi Square – Bangkok Bitcoin meetup

Satoshi Square is the name for Bitcoin-meetups that is occuring all over the world, where Bitcoin enthusiasts meet up to buy and sell Bitcoin between each other, discuss the latest news about Bitcoin and also explain to curious newcomers what Bitcoin is about. The Satoshi Square Bangkok was started by a Swedish Bitcoin-enthusiast, who lives part of the year in Bangkok. Meetups are held every Monday. It is one of the larger Bitcoin-meetups that we have been to, and every time between 20 and 30 people are joining the meetings here in Bangkok, most are expats living here full-time or part of the year, but also a few Thais show up at the meetings.

At this meeting we had the privilege to meet people who got interested in Bitcoin from both through their interest in the technology and through their political ideology, and the discussions went hot on both of these subjects. We met a person who was in to Bitcoin very early. He told us how already in 2010 they understood what bitcoin would entail and just waited for states or mafias trying to hack the Bitcoin-network. David Barnes, the managing director of Bitcoin Co. Ltd., and Chris de Rose, from the Bitcoin Uncensoredpodcast, was there at the meeting. We also finally got to meet Happy George, or Mr. Liberland as he puts it. We heard about him on a Bitcoin meetup in Kuala Lumpur in 2015. If you hang around in the Liberland chat groups you know who he is.

We also got a very nice surprise! Our friend Stefan realized that we were in Bangkok at the same time as him, so he accompanied us to the Satoshi Square meeting. It was awesome to meet him here. He is a Swedish ancap, who lives in Singapore. We can really recommend his Youtube-channel where he compares Sweden and Singapore from an ancap-perspective.

We really recommend that you go to one of the Satoshi square-meetups if you’re visiting Bangkok!

It is easy to find the meetup point when you have a big sign that shouts out “Bitcoiners here”. It was interesting that four out the six first persons here originated from Sweden.

More people dropped by during the evening, so we had to extend our table!

Ulrika with Happy George himself 🙂

Go Liberland!

The ancaps are in Bangkok

The ancaps are out on an adventure again and this time we chose to go back to Southeast Asia and our first stop is Bangkok. We have now sorted out the jetlag  after a flight with a lot of turbulence, and no sleep,  and also had time to check out our neighborhood. We live along the metro line and from here you can get around in Bangkok quite easily. We will show our pictures and movies in a different way from now on and we have decided to display them in a slide show instead. If you click on the picture, you will see the photos in a pop-up window, and you get to see the whole picture in their original size.

Walking around in Bangkok and the Terminal 21-mall

We will stay six nights in Bangkok and it is because we want to meet the bitcoin-people who work and live here. They have meetings every Monday, so we are thinking about meeting up with them today. It will be exciting and we’ll write about the meeting here on our blog later.

It is also the third time for Ulrika and the fourth time for Pontus in Bangkok, so we have already seen much of the city (you can read about our last time in Bangkok here). However, we have never walked around in Bangkok’s Chinatown or seen the giant reclining Buddha statue that houses in the Wat Pho Temple, so it had to be the tourist-thing to do this time. Images and a video from our trip are displayed in the gallery below.

China town and the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok

We are using a slideshow instead of putting out a lot of pictures n one blog post and would love to know what you think about it. Does it work well even if you read the blog post on your smart phone?

“The man who mistook his wife for a hat” av Oliver Sacks

“Give me liberty”, flera författare

The last days in Thailand was spent in Bangkok and this is the third time for Pontus and the second time for Ulrika we are there. We didn’t feel like staying in the old part of Bangkok, so we found a cheap hotel (with pool) along the metro line. We hung out a lot at the pool, but we also went to the Chatuchak weekend market and visited the used books store where Pontus found the book with large B in 2010, which led to his great interest in economics and politics (social science) in addition to mainly natural science, and that started the path to becoming an anarcho capitalist. The book is: The Third Wave by Alvin Toffler, from 1980.

Then it was time to say goodbye to Thailand and hello to Malaysia. We took the night train (which is very cozy and comfortable, and 24 hours later we had passed the simplest passport control so far and we were in Malaysia. First impression of Malaysia was fantastic and it deserves its own blog post which comes next!

We will end with two book reviews:

“The man who mistook his wife for a hat”, by Oliver Sacks

Oliver Sacks is a neurologist and author, who has collected case stories in this book of people he met through the years, who have different dysfunctions (congenital or acquired through trauma) that shows the amazing brain we have and what can happen when various parts of the brain is damaged. Ulrika has used some of these cases when she held lectures for physiotherapists and she has long wanted to read this book! Ulrika liked this book very much!

“Give Me Liberty”, several authors

This book we found in a bookstore in Chiang Mai and it is a collection of short stories written by various science fiction writers on the theme of freedom (Lloyd Biggle Jr., Christopher Anvil, Vernor Vinge, Murray Leinster, Alfred Elton van Vogt, Katherine MacLean and Charles de Vet, Frank Herbert (Dune series) and Eric Frank Russell). Very interesting stories about how the development of technology leads to reduced power of the state and increased anarchism, private police and justice! The stories take place both on earth and on other fictional planets. It is a very funny book with interesting thought experiment!

We chose to make a stop  in the Sukhothai district on our trip from Chiang Mai down to Bangkok and explore another place that is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List, namely the Sukhothai Old Town! We found a nice accommodation in new Sukhothai 13 km from the Old Town and regular buses go between these two cities which costs 30 baht (10 SEK). New Sukhothai is a very cozy small town and it was here that we found the world’s tastiest pizzas (The place is called Somprasong guesthouse if you want to find it!)

The kingdom of Sukhothai broke away from the Khmer empire in the 1200s and it was an independent kingdom during 140 years before it was swallowed up by another kingdom (Ayutthaya) and the capital of this kingdom was Sukhothai (old city). Some Thai historians see the kingdom Sukhothai as the starting point of today’s Thai nation. We rented bikes and biked around in the central part of the historical park and saw very nice temples with both Thai, Khmer and Chinese architecture!

We have landed in Bangkok now and spend a few days in a hotel with a rooftop swimming pool! This is the advantage travelling off season, to be able to find hotels for cheap price when there aren’t so many tourists in the neighborhood!

Några dagar i Chiang Mai

We went to Chiang Mai for a few days of administrative and logistical work. We only have VISA in Thailand to May 12th so it was time to spend some time planning our trip (i.e. what we want to do in Thailand and where to go afterwards) and also, the slave holder must get the declaration in time. The plan is as follows: we will spend this week in Sukhothai Thani and Bangkok, and next week we will take the night train from Bangkok to Malaysia! Malaysia will be really fun to experience! We are entering the rainy season so most days are incredibly hot, but every now and then, these magnificent thunderstorms show up! The heat makes us not want to be out as much  during the day, but we managed to see and do some things in Chiang Mai. First impression is that this is a party town with many bars and activities for party-people and where the peak season for this type of tourists is over for the season. We walked around and managed to see some temples and enjoy a Thai massage! Our friend Mike tipped us off that we could go to a women’s prison and pay for a massage! The women there are taught the profession and take in customers to practice massage-techniques while practicing English. The money they earn is saved and will be their initial capital when they served their sentence! We were told it would be difficult to find the place (the maps were not updated, but it is  apparently now on tripadvisor!), so we didn’t look for the place in the heat. Instead, we took the next best thing and went to a massage place run by former prisoners (read about Lila Thai massage here!). It was as nice as a Thai massage can be! We recommend to check out these two places if it happens that you are in Chiang Mai!

We have now left Chiang Mai and traveled down to Sukhothai Thani to explore an ancient city!

We met up with our friend Mike (the mathematician from Canada) at the bus station in Luang Prabang and headed towards the Thai border and further travel to Chiang Rai. This trip took 18 hours, and is probably the longest travel we’ve done by bus. We managed to sleep anyway and Ulrika has discovered that she now gets motion sick on the bus, so that is not fun. It’s lucky that she can listen to podcasts during the time when it is difficult to read on these twisting roads.

The goal of Chiang Rai was to see the white temple (Wat Rong Khun) and black houses (Baan Dam). We went together with Mike and took the local bus (very convenient) which starts from the bus terminal 1, right in the center of Chiang Rai. The ticket costs 20 baht ( ca 7 SEK) one way and the bus hosts are very kind and make sure that you jump of at the right place! First out was the Wat Rong Khun and it is the coolest temple that we have seen so far. Unfortunately, we could not go in and look at the paintings inside the temple due to renovations after an earthquake in May last year which damaged the temple. However, the temple itself is so awesome with so much details and touches of contemporary culture (you will see in the pictures what we mean!), so it didn’t matter. The temple is built by a private artist and entrepreneur with his own money, and the goal is that it should not cost anything to experience this temple!

To get back to Chiang Rai, walk back to the main road and hail a bus or a songthaew (small car platform!). Next, we headed northwards with the next local bus to see Baan Dam and it was a very interesting and odd experience. Baan Dam is an art exhibition of black houses (it is free entry), where most of the interior is made of bones and hides of animals, as well as toilets (yes, they are a part of the exhibition!). The oddest of the exhibition is that there is an abundance of dead animals redesigned to the interior where for example the floor of one of the houses was completely covered with crocodile skins and it feels a bit creepy.

We hung out a lot with Mike and got to explore some interesting monuments located in Chiang Rai, we experienced a cool lightning storm (there is a video of the lightning on the bottom of this blog post) and one of the evenings Pontus and Mike challenged each other in chess (it was 1-1 at the end of the night) and it is said that the winner will have the honor to meet Ulrika next ;)! It was a short stop in Chiang Rai (two nights) before we took the next bus to come to Chiang Mai, where we are now.
