Bilder från Leon / Pictures from Leon

(Please scroll down to the orange text for the English version)

Here are our last pictures from our time in Leon, Nicaragua. There are still lots of things to do both in and outside of Leon if you don’t happen to have friends in the university, from volcano boarding, to the revolution museum to just jumping on a local bus out to the beaches on the Pacific coast. Leon is a university town so there is a rich nightlife where both tourists and locals blend together to socialize. One tip we got from our friend was to buy a ticket to climb up on the roof of the Cathedral of Leon. This costs 3 US dollars per person, and from up there you get a good overview of Leon. Several famous Nicaraguan personalities are buried inside the cathedral and we got the sense that this church was Nicaragua’s response to Westminister Abbey in London. The cathedral also has guided tours in the catacombs, but unfortunately they were closed for the public when we were there. After this it was time for us to leave Leon and explore Granada, where we would see lava, which was one of our things on our bucket list.

We found out that the world can be a small place sometimes. Leon is a university city with over 200,000 inhabitants, tourists not included. So there are a lot of people walking around in bars, restaurants and dance halls in Leon during the nights. The evening we came we immediately went straight into the lively city to find a quieter place to have dinner after a full day traveling from El Salvador to Nicaragua. We were greatly surprised when a familiar face showed up in the crowd in the first restaurant that we walked into. It was a happy reunion with Filimon, our old doctoral fellow from Linköping University, and we were invited to sit down with his colleagues and students from Leon’s Autonomous University. Filimon is now a professor and is currently doing research on both the Zika- and the dengue virus. A few days later he gave us a guided tour around his working place and got to see how they work here in Leon. Several colleagues of Filimon have defended their thesis at both the Karolinska Institute or Linköping University, so it was nice to come and see how they do research and teach here in Leon. Several thousand students are studying at Leon Autonomous University, from biomedical scientists to dentists and doctors. There is currently a phase three dengue vaccine trial taking place in Leon, as one of the centers together with many other around the world. We got a guided tour of the clinic and got to hear about the dengue vaccine by Felix, the professor who lead the study here in Leon. We hope that the vaccine is as good as they say. It will probably take a few years before it comes out on the market if the vaccine pass the phase three trial.

Central America has its fair share of tropical diseases and 90% of all 10-year olds in Nicaragua have antibodies against the dengue virus, which means that they have had dengue fever during their ten first years of life.

With this information, it was perhaps not so surprising that we managed to get dengue fever before we left from our 9 months of travel in Central america, but that is another story that we will write about later.

Ulrika also had her birthday when we were in Leon and her 33-year birthday was celebrated with Filimon and his lovely family. Thank you so much for the good food and that we got to hang out with you!

A lovely reunion in Nicaragua ! Filimon, thanks for letting us hang out with you all when we were in Leon!

Åka bräda ned för en vulkan i Nicaragua / Volcano boarding in Nicaragua

(Please scroll down to the orange text for the English version)

“Wouldn’t it be possible to go down the volcano using a board?”

That was the question I asked Pontus while we pulsed down the volcano Acatenango in Guatemala. The deep, loose layer of ash on top of the volcano felt like snow and we could slide down the steep mountain on the soles of our feet in a fraction of the time it took us to walk up the last tough stretch of about 300 meters of altitude from the base camp. At that point we did not know that a month later we would stand at the edge of the volcano Cerro Negro in Nicaragua with funny looking protective clothes and a board in our hand while we waited for our turn to ride down a volcano.

However, it would be more like sledding than snowboarding, but we were just as happy anyway. The walk up on the volcano Cerro Negro took only 40 minutes and was a much easier hike than other volcanoes we’ve climbed in Central America, and the view of the Nicaraguan countryside is stunning.

Cerro Negro is one of the youngest volcanoes in the world and it rose from the ground on 13 April 1850. Since then, the volcano has had several outbreaks and is still active. We could feel this by scraping off the top layer with our feets and touch the ground with our hands. Five centimeters below the layer of rubble and ash, the same ground we would soon volcano board down on, was so hot that we almost burnt our hands and we also saw smoke seeping out through a crevice on the side of the primary crater. The last eruption took place in 1999 and the volcano is closely monitored by scientists to warn of any signs that Cerro Negro is at risk of a new outbreak.

Do you also want to go board down a volcano? Then you can just walk around for a while in Leon and you will find many who offer volcano boarding tours for prices of around 25 US Dollar, including transport and everything you need. Some agencies even offer that you can go down the volcano twice, if you feel like going up the mountain one more time. So ask what is included in the price when booking. It should also be possible to ride down with a more snowboard-like board that you stand on when you go down, but we understood that it was unusual that tourists used those kind of boards and the risk of injury is also much higher when using those. We, and everyone else who was there, were sitting down on the board and we brought our camera and filmed our journey down the volcano to show you how it’s done.

It can go really fast if you choose not to brake with your feet, and the whole thing is over in two minutes. We can really recommend this activity if you are in Nicaragua and are a person who likes a little action-packed adventure and beautiful scenery.
