Grå starr-behandling med stamceller och vetenskapshackare / Cataract treatment with stem cells and science hackers

(Please scroll down to the orange text for the English version)

Since we have been temporarily stationed in Mexico, we thought to include more things that interest us in our travel blog and we hope you will like these posts too 🙂

An extremely interesting study has been published in Nature showing that it may be possible to treat cataracts in babies by allowing the child’s own stem cells to do the job. Cataract is the major cause of blindness worldwide and cataract means that the lens of the eye becomes cloudy by the dead cells in the lens, where the dead cells blocks the light from reaching the retina. Cataract is most common among the elderly people, but there is also babies who are born with cataract and it is about them that this study is about.

The normal treatment of cataract is to suck out the damaged lens through an incision in the cornea and the lens capsule before inserting an artificial lens. There are many side effects associated with this surgery, such as inflammation, high eye pressure, edema, etc., but more common is that areas are formed on the lens where stem cells that are left in the lens capsule has regenerated new lens tissue, and these tissues must then be removed with a laser. What this study shows is that these lens-stem cells can regenerate a new lens in just a few months in infants undergoing surgery for cataract, if the lens capsule, where the lens stem cells are, are kept mostly intact by removing the cloudy lens through an extremely small hole. At 8 months after surgery, the thickness of the re-formed lens is the same as for a standard lens. The risk of common and rare side effects, which occur with the usual method today, are significantly reduced. It will be interesting to follow the continuation of this research. This study included only twelve children and the follow-up only continued to 8 months after the surgery. It would be interesting to see how the sight of these children develop as they get older and it would also be interesting to see whether this treatment also works on older people where cataract is more common.

Another thing we’d like to endorse is an incredibly cool female science hackers from Kazakhstan. Alexandra Elbakyan is a software developer and a researcher in neurotechnology, who became tired of that so much of today’s academic research is not public and that the cost to get access to scientific reports is very high. What she did was to create a website where people help each other to get around the pay walls of scientific journals and create open source science!
