Vi tog farväl av vår bonusfamilj och lämnade Kandy med tåg. Att färdas med tåg mellan Kandy och Colombo ska vara en av höjdpunkterna i Sri Lanka, så vi satte oss tillrätta i den lyxiga observationsvagnen och såg ut över landskapet som susade förbi. Det var riktigt häftigt med skog, berg och tågräls som tog oss nära raviner som stupade rakt ned och igenom korta och långa tunnlar, så det var väl värt pengarna (900 rupee per biljett, ca 55 SEK). Vi åkte tillbaka till Colombo för att fortsätta med vår ansökan om indiskt visum och denna gång hann vi även med att se mer av Colombo än förra gången. Vi har promenerat längs vattnet och sett hamnen i Colombo och pussats på Slave Island som nu är ett tillhåll för kärlekspar. Det finns även många pelikaner och det var första gången vi fick se fria pelikaner, så det var roligt! Vi har gått mycket i regn då monsunregnet härjar här de flesta av dagarna och fått fina skavsår på fötterna. Vi har även besökt Nationalmuseumet och naturhistoriska museét här i Colombo. De ligger bredvid varandra så man betalar inträde till båda på en gång (600 rupee, ca 40 SEK) och biljetten är bara giltig för en dag. Vi glömde vår kamera denna dag och batterierna på mobilen var nästan urladdade så vi har tyvärr inte så mycket bilder därifrån. Det bästa med nationalmuseumet var målningarna av en irländsk konstnär (Andrew Nicholls) som målade ögonblickbilder av hur vardagen såg ut i Sri Lanka på 1840-talet. Riktigt vackra målningar där man fick en liten inblick av Sri Lanka för 170 år sedan. Det som saknades var ungefär hela 1900-talets historia om hur Sri Lanka blev självständigt och inbördeskriget, men vi misstänker att såren ännu inte är läkta efter det, så från den perioden var det knäpptyst inne i nationalmuseumet. Därefter blev det naturhistoriska museumet och trots att vi varit på många naturhistoriska museum innan (bland annat New York, London och Göteborg), så var det här ändå lite roligt. Vi hittade en bild som var helt uppåt väggarna fel, som ni kan se nedan. Vi hade gått hela dagen så vi fick kämpa oss igenom de sista rummen med mycket trötta fötter innan vi tog en tuk tuk tillbaka till vårt boende. Vi har annars blivit mycket duktiga på att använda de lokala bussarna då vi lärt oss hur det fungerar här i Sri Lanka, de är mycket billiga (ca 20 – 40 rupee = 1,3 – 2,6 SEK) men fungerar bra, det är bara att hoppa på och vänta tills någon kommer och tar betalt. Ibland får man sittplats och ibland är bussen knökfull med stående passagerare så att man får tränga sig igenom när man ska in och ut och stå väldigt tätt.
Nu när vi äntligen fått vårt visum till Indien så vill vi göra en kort beskrivning av hur det går till när man ansöker om visum till Indien från Colombo, i Sri Lanka. Vi följde beskrivningen från en bloggpost från 2014 och tyvärr funkar inte webbsidan längre, men här är en cachad version som fungerar. Vi satt och försökte fylla i alla formulär själva, men det tar oerhört lång tid och det är svårt att veta hur detaljerad man behöver vara och vad man ska svara i vissa fält. Den officiella hemsidan gillar också att krascha och det går inte att spara, så det är bara att börjar om igen om detta händer. Efter 6 timmars försök gav vi upp och bestämde oss för att åka till ett företag som gör detta åt dig väldigt snabbt och smidigt visade det sig för endast 400 rupee (ca 25 SEK) och de finns bekvämt nog på samma lilla gata där indiska ambassaden (IVS) ligger. Det är smidigt att ta sig till indiska ambassaden (IVS) med buss nr 101 från framsidan av tågstationen (Fort Colombo, vid Pettah) och hoppa av vid Bambalapitiya junction och sedan är det bara ca 250 meters promenad till IVS. Vi var där 15 minuter innan IVS öppnade och en timme senare kom vi ut från företaget med alla papper ifyllda och kunde fortsätta med ansökan inne på ambassaden. Viktigt är att ha fyllt i det komplementerande formuläret som ska faxas till din “hemambassad” (i vårt fall är det Stockholm) för att på ett byråkratiskt vis kolla att du inte är svartlistad av den indiska staten. Detta tar en vecka så du får tidigast komma tillbaka till IVS en vecka efteråt och då lämna in ditt pass och vänta 1,5 dag innan du kan få tillbaka det, med ett indiskt visum inklistrat. Det går att lämna in ditt pass senare om du liksom vi vill åka runt i Sri Lanka först innan du kommer tillbaka till Colombo. Det är också mycket viktigt att du är vid IVS på rätt tid för de olika stegen (se tiderna för de olika delarna här), annars kommer de neka dig och be dig återkomma nästa arbetsdag.
Så nu kan vi åka till Indien, Yay! =)
We said goodbye to our bonus family and left Kandy by train. Travel by train between Kandy and Colombo is suppose to be one of the highlights when travelling in Sri Lanka, so we sat down in the luxurious observation wagon and saw the landscape swish by looking out the window. The landscape was really cool with forests, mountains and railroad tracks that took us near gorges that fell straight down and through short and long tunnels, so it was well worth the money (900 rupee per ticket, about 6 EUR). We went back to Colombo to continue with our application for the Indian visa, and this time we also had time to see more of Colombo than the last time. We have walked along the water, seen the port of Colombo and kissed at Slave Island which is now a spot where lovers gather to make out. There are many pelicans here and it is the first time we see pelicans in the wild, so it was fun! We have walked a lot in rain as the monsoon rain is raging here most days and gotten nice blisters on our feet. We also visited the National museum and Natural History museum here in Colombo. They are located next to each other so you pay admission to both at once (600 rupees = 4 EUR) and the ticket is only valid for one day. We forgot our camera this day and the batteries on our mobile phones were almost empty so unfortunately we do not have so much pictures from this day. The best part of the national museum were the paintings by an Irish artists (Andrew Nicholls) who painted snapshots of what everyday life looked like in Sri Lanka in the 1840s. Really beautiful paintings where we got a small glimpse of Sri Lanka 170 years ago. What we felt was missing was the entire 1900s history of how Sri Lanka became independent and the Civil War, but we suspect that the wounds are still open after that. It was absolutely silent inside the National museum about that important period. After that, we went in to the natural history museum, and although we have been to many natural history museums before (including New York, London and Gothenburg), this version was still fun to explore. We found a picture that was completely wrong and we think you can spot it if you just check out the pictures below. We were walking all day so we struggled our way through the last rooms in the Natural History museum with very tired feet before we took a tuk-tuk back to our homestay. We have otherwise become very skilled at using the local buses as we learned how it works here in Sri Lanka. The local traffic is very cheap (about 20-40 rupees = 0.12-0.25 EUR) but works well and you just jump on and wait for a guy to come around and collect the fee. Sometimes you get a seat and sometimes the bus is full to the brim with standing passengers so that you need to push yourself through when jumping on and off the buss.
We want to make a brief description of how to apply for a visa to India from Colombo, Sri Lanka, now that we finally got our visa! We followed the description from a blog post from 2014, that unfortunately does not have a working webpage anymore, but here’s a cached version that works. We sat down and tried to fill in all the forms ourselves, but it takes a very long time and it is difficult to know how detailed you need to be and what to respond in certain fields. The official website also like to crash and you can’t save your progress, so it is just to start over again if this happens. We gave up after 6 hours of attempts and decided to go to a company that does this for you. They did it very quickly and smoothly for just 400 rupees (approximately 2.5 EUR) and they are situated on the same small street where the Indian visa embassy (IVS) is . A easy way to get to the IVS is to take bus No. 101 from the front of the train station (Fort Colombo, at Pettah) and hop off at Bambalapitiya junction, and from there it is only about a 250 meters walk to the IVS. We were there 15 minutes before the IVS opened and the companies that help you prepare the visa application is open at that time. So one hour later we came out from the company with all the paperwork filled out and could proceed with the application inside the ISV. It is important to have filled in the complementary form that will be faxed to your “home embassy” (in our case it’s Stockholm) for a bureaucratic way to check that you are not blacklisted by the Indian State. This takes a week so the earliest time to come back to the IVS for handing in your passport is a week later. After that you will get your passport back 1.5 day later with an Indian visa in your passport. You can hand in your passport later than a week after your initiation of the application if you want to travel around in Sri Lanka before you return to Colombo. It is also very important that you are at the IVS at the right time for the different stages (see the times for the different stages here), otherwise they will deny you and ask you to come back the next day.
So now we can go to India, Yay! =)
