Day 2 offered six hours of hiking passing through the Deer Cave passage and into the ‘Garden of Eden’. From the beginning the Deer Cave and the Green Cave was one big cave system, but long time ago a large part of the roof collapsed and created a green valley surrounded by the walls of the limestone mountains. Our day began with a visit to the Lang Cave which is located next to the Deer Cave and these two caves are actually connected. After that we entered the Deer Cave and it was so beautiful. However, you need to put up with that it is literally raining guano (bat poop for those who have not seen the movie “Ace Ventura: When nature calls”). There are about 3 million bats (12 different species) in there performing their needs despite the fact that humans and animals walk under them. We also got to wade (or swim for those who were short) to get across a river before we came into the valley! Today’s goal was a waterfall inside the valley where we swam and had lunch before we took the same route back. Ulrika got to experience being bitten by her first leech and she thought she would be calm and constrained if it were to occur, but in real life she shouted and behaved like Ace Ventura when he got poison arrows in his thighs. Our guide came to the rescue and the hike could continue to the park entrance. We were dirty, guano smelling, wet and happy when we were back and we also realised that our shoes would not get dry before the following day where we would explore the Clearwater Connection which is caving at the advanced level in the National Park!

Day 3 and we put on our wet shoes and met Christine, Harry, Malte and Craig, and our guide for the day, and took the boat upstream to the famous cave system Clearwater! The Clearwater Connection is a passage between the Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave systems which involves 5 km of hiking / climbing and where 1.5 km of these consists of swimming / floating in the Clearwater river, which flows through the Clearwater Cave. You pass three really tight passages where you have to squeeze through mountains of rocks that have fallen from the roof, and are now forming the floor of the cave. It was really cool and if you would like to see how it was then you must watch the videos below. Normally this tour takes 6-8 hours but our group with Christine, Harry, Malte, Craig, Pontus and Ulrika did it in 5.5 hours! We were really tired at the end and Pontus had a bit of luck on his side when he slipped on a rock. He fell 2 metres and he would have struck his back against the boulders if he wouldn’t have had our backpack on at that moment that saved him. He got away with only some bruises. All climbing over muddy rocks made us really dirty when we arrived at the river so it was nice to get into the water and float along while we were trying to keep our head above water and have our feet forward in order to avoid collision with sharp stones which were lurking underwater. We came back to our accommodation very happy with our day and met “our” gang for sharing a few bottles homemade rice wine and talk before half the group would travel on. Thanks for the fun memories gang!!!

Skipping to the next day and the Clearwater connection! This was the bottom of the second narrow passage (or second squeeze). Not much room to move in among the boulders!

That's where we're going to squeeze through. We have also very cool videos on how small the space between the rock actually was so check them out!

There were also other animals than bats that navigate in the dark with echolocation in the caves!

Lunchpaus i totalt mörker. Härlig känsla och skräckfilmsassociationer kom smygande :)! Lunch break in total darkness. Great feeling and horror movie associations came crawling :)!

Herregud!

    • Ulrika

Ja, där går min gräns också! Under vatten i grottsystem känns väldigt obehagligt! Det här var dock bara kul 🙂
