We have made a visit to the Batu Caves which are located about 13 km north of Kuala Lumpur and we were very pleasantly surprised by this site! It is a collection of caves in a limestone mountain which was made by water that dug passages in the rock, and the caves have probably been around approximately the last 400 million of years! Hindus have built temples in several of these caves and it is still a place for worshiping the Hindu gods today. We have never been at an active Hindu temple area before (we have been to formerly Hindu temples that have been redesigned into Buddhist temples), so this was an interesting experience! We are not religious, so the highlight of this attraction (or the icing on the cake) was to go into the dark cave situated in the temple area, which is owned by a company, CMG (Cave Management Group), and has no government subsidies so lo and behold (warning of irony directed at government advocates who claim that business is evil and destroys nature, unlike the states ….)! The temple area is almost free for visitors (one cave cost 5 ringgit, or about 12 SEK), but the entrance to the dark cave costs 35 ringgit (about 82 SEK) and most of the money go to the cave to preserve and conserve the unique wildlife there. This 2-km-long cave is home for some animals that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Some examples is the spider Liphistius batuensis (the trapdoor spider) that builds a special nest with its net. This nest has both a front door from where the spider hides and pop out when a meal has come close enough, and a back door from where the spider can escape its nest when enemies are approaching. The part of the cave where this particular spider lives is not open to tourists since only 200 spiders have been found and they live in a very fragile ecosystem. A regenerating worm (Dugesia batuensis) was also discovered in this cave, which has the special property that if the worm is split in two parts, both parts continue to live and they grow back to the same size as an adult worm within two weeks. There are also over 200,000 bats of the species Eonycteris spelaea (or Cave Nectar Bat), which eats nectar and is very important for the pollination of fruits, like mangoes, and is the only animal in the world that pollinates the Durian fruit (No Cave Nectar Bat = no Durian fruit), and Hipposideros Diadema (or Diadem Horseshoe Bat) that can eat a lot of insects, especially mosquitoes. A film with two assembled video clips can be found at the bottom of this blog post with the sound of these bats recorded (first clip is with the sound of the Diadem Horseshoe Bat and the second clip’s is with the sound of the Cave Nectar Bat). We just went about 400m into the cave but it was a cool and very dark experience.

In the temple area, a large group of macaques have their home and you should not go too close to them, tourists’ ignorance to feed them has made them aggressive (especially against smaller children, and if you’re carrying food). It’s very easy to get here and we appreciated the visit very much!

I do not know much about Hinduism, but to me this looks like it is supposed to be the goddess Kali dancing on her husband Shiva's back? Anyone who knows better?
