Malaysia is a wonderfull multicultural country! Georgetown, the regional capital of Penang is very inspiring and it’s not every day that you walk around in a smaller town where you see how well different philosophies of life can live together! Here you can find the Indian Quarter, Chinese Quarter, the Christian Quarter in a throng of Muslim neighborhoods and everyone respects each other’s choices in life. You can see the skyscrapers being built at a rapid pace mixed with historic buildings that are posted on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Malaysia is a predominantly  Muslim country, but many  have a casual attitude towards religion compared to other religious countries. For example in the muslim community you can spread out the fasting days during ramaddan throughout the year. We got our prejudices crushed when we got to see a woman put on a harness and enjoy paragliding after a boat along Penang’s coastline wearing a burqa!

By chance, we found a very nice newly opened gold museum in Georgetown which was very interactive (we got to see how silver bullions were cast, pan for gold and take with us what we managed to find!). Worth knowing is that you pay 1.20 ringgit (almost SEK 3)  for the ferry trip to and from Penang. Some traffic light intersections are incredibly slow and inefficient in Georgetown so there they have room for improvement…

The highest income tax in Malaysia is 26% and there is no property tax or wealth tax, and according to the official statistics, the unemployment rate here is very low (around 3%)! The accommodation is a bit more expensive than what we have had so far and the beers are much more expensive, around 15-25 kr for 33cl (15% tax on alcohol in this country).

The monsoon season is approaching Malaysia’s west coast, so we decided to go over to the east coast and to the diving paradise Perhantian Islands, and this is where we are now. We’ve booked us on a dive club here and the next few days we will spend some of the time under the surface and hopefully see some sharks!

We went out to Batu Ferringhi for a few days. The water was unfortunately so unhealthy around Pengang, so we didn't want to swim here!
