Vita tempel och svarta hus

Vi mötte upp vår vän Mike (matematiker från Kanada) på busstationen i Luang Prabang och satte kurs mot thailändska gränsen och vidare färd mot Chiang Rai. Denna resa tog 18h och är nog den längsta vi har gjort med buss. Vi lyckades iallafall sova och Ulrika har upptäckt att hon numera blir åksjuk på bussar, så det är inte lika roligt. Det är tur att hon kan lyssna på podcasts under tiden, då det är svårt att läsa på dessa serpentinvägar.

Målet med Chiang Rai var att se det vita templet (Wat Rong Khun) och svarta husen (Baan Dam). Vi slog följe med Mike och åkte med de jättesmidiga lokalbussarna som utgår från bussterminal 1, mitt i centrum. Biljetten kostar 20 baht (ca 7 kr) enkel väg och bussvärden är väldigt snäll och berättar var man ska hoppa av och hur man ska gå! Först ut var Wat Rong Khun och det är det häftigaste templet som vi sett hittills. På grund av en jordbävning i maj förra året som skadade templet, så kunde vi inte gå in och titta på målningarna, men templet i sig är så häftigt med mycket detaljer och inslag av samtidskulturen (ni får se på bilderna vad vi menar!). Templet är byggd av en privat konstnär och entrepenör med sina egna pengar och målet är att det inte ska kosta något att få uppleva detta tempel!

För att komma tillbaka till Chiang Rai kan man gå ut till rätt sida på den stora vägen och vinka in bussen eller en songthaew (liten bil med flak!). Vi begav oss sedan norrut med nästa buss för att se Baan Dam och det var en väldigt intressant och udda upplevelse. Baan Dam är en konstutställning av svarta hus (det är gratis inträde), där det mesta av inredningen är gjord av ben och hudar från djur, samt toaletter (ja, de är en del av utsällningen!). Det mest udda i själva utställningen är att det är ett överflöd av döda djur omgjorda till inredning där tillexempel golvet i ett av husen var helt täckt av krokodilhudar, vilket känns lite obehagligt.

Vi hängde mycket med Mike och fick uppleva lite intressanta monument inne i Chiang Rai, ett häftigt åskoväder (finns video på detta längst ned i blogginlägget) och en av kvällarna utmanade Pontus och Mike varandra i schack (det blev 1-1 tillslut) och det är sagt att vinnaren ska få äran att möta Ulrika ;)! Det blev ett kort stopp i Chiang Rai (två nätter) innan vi tog nästa buss för att komma till Chiang Mai, där vi är nu.

We met up with our friend Mike (the mathematician from Canada) at the bus station in Luang Prabang and headed towards the Thai border and further travel to Chiang Rai. This trip took 18 hours, and is probably the longest travel we’ve done by bus. We managed to sleep anyway and Ulrika has discovered that she now gets motion sick on the bus, so that is not fun. It’s lucky that she can listen to podcasts during the time when it is difficult to read on these twisting roads.

The goal of Chiang Rai was to see the white temple (Wat Rong Khun) and black houses (Baan Dam). We went together with Mike and took the local bus (very convenient) which starts from the bus terminal 1, right in the center of Chiang Rai. The ticket costs 20 baht ( ca 7 SEK) one way and the bus hosts are very kind and make sure that you jump of at the right place! First out was the Wat Rong Khun and it is the coolest temple that we have seen so far. Unfortunately, we could not go in and look at the paintings inside the temple due to renovations after an earthquake in May last year which damaged the temple. However, the temple itself is so awesome with so much details and touches of contemporary culture (you will see in the pictures what we mean!), so it didn’t matter. The temple is built by a private artist and entrepreneur with his own money, and the goal is that it should not cost anything to experience this temple!

To get back to Chiang Rai, walk back to the main road and hail a bus or a songthaew (small car platform!). Next, we headed northwards with the next local bus to see Baan Dam and it was a very interesting and odd experience. Baan Dam is an art exhibition of black houses (it is free entry), where most of the interior is made of bones and hides of animals, as well as toilets (yes, they are a part of the exhibition!). The oddest of the exhibition is that there is an abundance of dead animals redesigned to the interior where for example the floor of one of the houses was completely covered with crocodile skins and it feels a bit creepy.

We hung out a lot with Mike and got to explore some interesting monuments located in Chiang Rai, we experienced a cool lightning storm (there is a video of the lightning on the bottom of this blog post) and one of the evenings Pontus and Mike challenged each other in chess (it was 1-1 at the end of the night) and it is said that the winner will have the honor to meet Ulrika next ;)! It was a short stop in Chiang Rai (two nights) before we took the next bus to come to Chiang Mai, where we are now.
